Hey, yeah I do leave it on when down shifting. It does make a difference when down shifting especially when your towing something. If you’re at all worried about hurting the pac brake or turbo while down shifting with the pac brake on, it won’t hurt anything. The pac brake disengages while the clutch is in and then re-engages as soon as you let the clutch back out and the truck senses the load/pressure. You’re welcome! And thank you for the question!

@williamhsteele2 жыл бұрын
Yeah an exhaust brake definitely helps with these older trucks with their breaking systems. This truck has 4:10 rears which helps it shift right along at lower RPMs. Is your transmission a stock rebuild or did you have upgraded parts put in? Thank you for watching!

Just a stock rebuild . With a dual disc quiet lol Val Air twin disc , BM short shifter . I since added a hydroboost system. A significant increase in braking , it needed it . I will add a exhaust brake to my truck . What do you recommend. My truck has 3.54 gears . My g56 is the first version so over drive is not a high as the later model . I was thinking I might just go a larger tire to make up for that next time . When I changed the transmission mounted 4x4 to a floor mounted 4x4 shifter that was a deal . Works good though . @williamhsteele2 жыл бұрын
These trucks can be extremely reliable as long as the previous owner or owners took decent care of it. The one thing I would absolutely do to the truck is put an aftermarket lift pump on it. I have a fass fuel 165 lift pump on this truck. The one weakness to these trucks is the stock/OEM lift pump and wears out causing the VP44 injection system to go bad. Thank you for watching. How many miles does the truck have on it that you’re looking at?
@weepweep22252 жыл бұрын
@@williamhsteele ok I will definitely see if he has already had it done or not, he is a guy I work with and man it’s clean, he has almost 30k in receipts of work done to the truck, new 6 speed transmission, radiator, injection pump, front end was rebuilt and transfer case is freshly rebuilt. New bearings and I joints. A/C was just finished up and all fluids changed. And says he has maintenance records on her. She has 180k miles on her 🤷. And the injection pump is from thorough bred diesel. Asking 16 for it though. That’s why I was curious about them!

@@weepweep2225 that sounds like a good buy. I’ve heard good things about thoroughbreds injection pumps. If you do buy it, it’s not that hard of a job to put an aftermarket lift pump on. And most diesel shops can install one within a day. The 2 brands most people use are Fass and Airdog.

hey new to cummins and diesel truck, why do they always start in second gear ?
@williamhsteele Жыл бұрын
Hey, good question. We simply do that because of the amount of torque the engine puts out. It’s easier and quicker to start out in 2nd gear if your not pulling a trailer with enough weight. However if you’re pulling a trailer you’ll end up using 1st gear to get the truck moving for the first 10 to 20 feet usually then go to 2nd gear. You would possibly stall the truck in 2nd gear if you had a trailer, especially trying to start out on an up hill with weight. Hopefully that makes sense. It’s something you have to try out and feel for yourself then you’ll totally understand. Did you get a truck yet? Or are you still looking?
