Can heat flow from dry ice to ice because of the temperature difference between the cold and colder body? Can we run the Sterling engine by using ice as the source of heat and dry ice as the sink?
@cdmarshall74482 жыл бұрын
Heat is the difference between temperature, the change in internal energy isn't heat. LOT makes it perfectly clear Energy, Heat and Temperature although closely related are not the exact same thing. I'm hoping you learned this already in the last 5 years but your never know? >“Heat is defined as the form of energy that is transferred across a boundary by virtue of a temperature difference or temperature gradient. Implied in this definition is the very important fact that a body never contains heat, but that heat is identified as heat only as it crosses the boundary. Thus, heat is a transient phenomenon." -Thermodynamics, G. J. V. Wylen, John Wiley & Sons, 1960

II Law of Thermodynamics refers to everything and is absolutely the most important law in physics. It fact it is Newton's Laws of Motion as it is kinetic motion of molecules. The very basic one will be vibration. If we sink into atomic level we can even say to electromagnetic field of electron shells because this the only space of contact. Proven in every possible way. Nevertheless, the modern accepted astrophysics is so wrong with this law. Quantum physics also can't handle this law correctly. But at our human scale this law is so damn horribly true at every instance.

@unluckyme2136 ай бұрын
but aren't hot stuff more disorder than cold stuff on the molecular and atomic level? or am i missing something
@aliaxxАй бұрын
Here's what you're missing (probably) Hot substances have definitely more molecular motion and appear more "disordered" than cold substances, however, it's true that entropy is about increasing disorder in a system but it is also about how energy is SPREAD in the entire system. So, when heat flows from a hot object to a cold object, the overall spread of energy between the two objects becomes more even, meaning the energy is more widely dispersed across the entire system. This greater dispersal of energy increases the total energy of the system, so entropy focuses on the combined state of the whole system. Here's two examples of gas molecules in a box to illustrate my point: 1. All molecules in one corner: Imagine all the gas molecules clumped together in one corner of the box. The energy here is "concentrated" because all the particals are in one small area and there aren't many ways we can arrange them, thus the entropy is lower. 2. Molecules spread throughout the box: Now, if we let the molecules move freely they will eventually spread out to fill the whole box. Energy is now spread across a much larger space. And there are many more ways to arrange the molecules when they're separated from each other around the box; because each molecules has more option where it can go, giving us more possible arrangements and hence higher entropy. "why entropy increases with energy spread?" when energy spreads out in a system, it can be arranged in many possible ways. This increase in possible arrangements is what makes entropy go up. So, it's not just about how things are disordered; rather it's about having more options for where the energy go. More arrangements=Higher entropy answering to your question, hot objects do have energetic molecules that move around, but spreading that energy out to other cooler objects allows for more arrangements in the entire system, increasing entropy. IN SHORT: The second law of thermodynamics says that a natural, spontaneous process, the total entropy of a system tends to increase. Which means, simply, processes that tend to go in a direction that spreads energy out more and increases the number of possible arrangements the entropy will also increase. hope you got the whole idea and it makes things clearer now :)

I don’t understand. A hot state seems to have higher entropy than a cold state. Going from hot to cold seems to decrease entropy.

If the entropy of the universe is always increasing how did evolution defy the second law of entropy?
@adamhanzlik86503 жыл бұрын
Its important to realise that the law applies to isolated systems. Evolution did not defy the law, as it was only able to achieve what it did with the help of a constant source of energy in the form of our Sun. If you look at our Solar System as a whole, you will see how the 2nd law of thermodynamics applies.

If u have an endothermic reaction (delta H is positive) like H2 + I2 --> 2HI can you say whether the entropy rises or decreases and whether the reaction could be spontaneous?
@MiKi-ki9fi2 жыл бұрын
The more concentrated molecule the less entropy. So the equation that you gave has less entropy. And also the reaction is spontaneous because normaly elements binds without energy input. ( as i guess)
