Yeah, absolutely. Also worth noting that they once let him loose with a double pedal, then took it away from him. That is the thing about truly great musicianship; it is rarely the case that more of a good thing is better, and the great musicians know it. Just look at the drum kit of Buddy Rich if you have any doubts.

If John Bonham were alive and watched that show, he may have said, damn son, that was a good lick to come out of that part. 😪 my heart gets heavy every time we're on the subject of Bonham and its mentioned that hes gone. He was one of the very biggest inspirations in my life. It was Kashmir, the first zeppelin song I ever heard, and it was his drumming that inspired me to pick up the sticks. I dove head first into my drumset, sounding like shit at first, until I got better and better, listening and playing along with my zeppelin albums and cds, now, I can pull off all of his chops, but i still dont sound like him, and no one ever will be able to sound like him. But not sounding like him, it's the fact that HE was the originator. He created that sound, and it died with him Leaving holes everywhere. Holes in the band, holes in the music industry, and a hole in my heart. Rest in peace John, I'm sure you now have a solid golden 5 pc set, and indestructible giant beat 16" and 18" crash rides, 15" giant beat hats, and your symbolic 24" GIANTbeat ride. Your using tree branches for sticks, cut from the tree of legends. Your legacy will never die my dear friend.

AyeJay, watching your first-time reactions to Led Zeppelin put a smile on my face through both videos! Yes, John “Bonzo” Bonham is arguably the GOAT. I certainly believe it! Still, John wasn’t the only immensely talented member of the band. Guitarist Jimmy Page can also claim legendary status as well as Robert Plant’s phenomenal vocal range. In the unlikely event nobody has suggested this already, check out these songs: “Immigrant Song” and “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” as two of many examples of Robert’s vocals. “When the Levee Breaks” is actually a cover by Led Zeppelin of a long-ago blues musician. It will show you some of their many influences. And last but certainly not least, listen to “Fool in the Rain” to appreciate how well the band worked together, even when John and Jimmy play to different time! AyeJay, I give you lots of respect for being open to the work of Led Zeppelin. Please let me know if read this! -Scott

No, that would be Keith Moon. Bonzo was an animal on tour because he hated touring and wanted to be home with his family, hence he drank to destruction, eventually his own. A very sad tale, but what a legacy he left, and his son, Jason, isn't too shoddy either. BTW, what really made Bonzo's drumming so special was the swing, not the pace or power. If you get the chance to ask any of the other members of the band, they'll tell you the same.

A little vid someone put together explaining why John Bonham was so great, including how the band played in one time signature while Bonzo played in another, and better yet, the polyrhythmic groove FOOL IN THE RAIN where john plays in 2 seperate times ³/4 on the high hats and the swing shuffle on the bass/snare all while the band was in a different time. Clinical, masterful, imitated but never duplicated best there ever was John Bonham.

I saw them live in Seattle in '72. Right place, right time. The concert went on for 4.5 hours. I've got the bootlegs and they fill 3 CDs with no duplicates. But during the concert Plant went to the microphone and said "That's everything we know. You want to hear xxx again?" and then they continued to play for another hour (I forget what song(s) he named) and the crowd continued to make a racket. Dad (who got tickets for me and a girlfriend drove us there and back) listened to it in the car parked on a nearby street - it was that loud.

His work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra was actually an influence on Peart. Also criminally underrated is Phil Collins. His early Genesis work is so creative and laid the groundwork for progressive rock to come...not to mention his work with Brand X! Check out their polyrhythmic interplay. On one song, Bonham lays out triplets in a 4/4 (on the bass!) while Page is in a 3/4 and then they're both in an 8/12 and it's nuts how tight that works out. All four members are legends who were always happy to get out of the way and let each other shine. There is a reason that each of them make the 'best of' lists time and time again. Yet when they would pull back in together they had an instinctual awareness of each other it was unearthly. What you are missing here is the sheer volume of Bonzo's playing and the massive bass tones he had. I was only a little kid when Led Zeppelin seemingly arrived from nowhere and completely transformed my world, yet I'm probably even more excited today to hear their music than I was then. Bonzo was the driving force of the band and when he died, the other three understood that they couldn't be Led Zeppelin without him.

All this Keith Moon shit...blah blah blah. Not impressed. He played the drums like he was out of control. Bonham had so much more feel, finesse, groove and musicality in his playing.

Nice! The look on your face!! DUDE! Priceless!! Bonzo could do more with one bass drum than mist drummers can do with a double bass kit. AND, his triplets are legendary 🥳 Speaking of sticks, listen to: four sticks

2nd best selling, but easily the best managed. The band almost certainly saw far more of the greenbacks than the biggest selling band (The Beatles). Actually, considering Paul McCartney was reputedly bankrupt at the time of the Band on the Run album, they definitely saw more of the folding stuff. If you think John Bonham was a monster on the drums, Peter Grant was every bit his equal in the band's management.

This version isn’t as good as the one from the film “The Song Remains the Same”. You should also checkout the studio versions of “Good Times Bad Times”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “immigrant Song”, “ When the Levee Breaks “, “ In My Time of Dying”, “Achilles Last Stand” and “Fool in the Rain” and the live versions of “The Song Remains the Same” and “I Can’t Quit You Baby”.

As a drummer, this version of Moby Dick made me set my sticks down for almost a week.. I like the version on Song Remains The Same, but this one lets you see more of what he’s doing without all the extra videos. Plus, his kick drum skills here.. mind blowing.

Caleb James I’m not a drummer so I was more commenting on sound quality and overall feel of this video. TSRS has such great sound that intend to favor songs from that movie over what are perhaps better performances from bootlegs and other official recordings because the levels are all so dialed in and the band was really tight in 73. I’m a big fan of their early tours and shows but the band was a bit more raw and I kind of think you have to be a fan to get into them. If I was gonna show a Zeppelin newbie a live performance video I would start with TSRS. I was oblivious to Bonzo’s foot speed until a drummer I know pointed it out in “Good Times Bad Times”. I still don’t think I fully appreciate how monstrous he was.

This guy was banging pots and pans at 5 yrs old. Keep watching. His hands move so fast you can’t keep up. Got his first set of real drums at 15. He was 32 when he died and Zeppelin couldn’t go on because they said he couldn’t be replaced. It was 1980. Coroner said he had the equivalent of 40 shots of vodka in his system. He aspirated into his lungs while he was passed out and died.

John "Bonzo" Bonham hit the drums so hard he broke sticks. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones do one-off reunion gigs, John's son Jason is behind the drum kit. John had Jason behind the drum kit at the age of 2, at 3 year old, John would wake Jason up in the middle of the night to play drums with whoever came to the house. Jason had his own band Bonham... but he also has Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience where he plays the songs and tells stories in between the songs. One of the songs in the JBLZE is MOBY DICK where Jason plays with a video of his father on the big screen doing the same thing. So it's like he's playing with his dad. Jason does the JBLZE with the blessing of Robert, Jimmy and JPJ. To Jason Bonham.. Robert, Jimmy, and JPJ are his literal godfathers. Robert used to drive him to grade school. Another drum solo that got recorded for a Led Zeppelin album was BONZO'S MONTREAUX.

Ayejay NEEDS to watch Drumset Artistry’s video on Moby Dick! He’s a drum teacher and he actually explains some parts of the song that are HELLA interesting, like I watched the video twice cause I loved both his reaction and the way he gave small details on parts that John did that were like tribute to other drummers, like this Blues drummer I can’t name. Either way! All of you have got to see it! I feel Jay would enjoy it too!
