Secondary Port Tides

‘Secondary ports’ is the second of my videos on tidal heights. When I was examining Yachtmaster candidates, this was the area where many came unstuck, but it’s not nearly so complicated as some imagine. Watch this video through carefully. Try to take in the first video if you can, and you should be home free. The next video discusses all the ways we can use this information once we’ve worked it out. We all know that a good plotter will crunch these numbers electronically, but some of us like to know what’s really going on!

Thank you so much Tom. I have learnt invaluable lessons in your last 2 videos. At 60 I am new to sailing, last year having left Swansea and sailed up to Deganwy. And doing this solo! Despite having the almanac and sweating over how to work the tides, suddenly the penny has dropped, plus never having known the atmospheric differences. What a revelation from your concise video aid. Thank you for explaining that so nicely Tom, I have some of your books which are great. I grew up in Bangor and learnt to sail dinghies on the Straits at Port Dinorwic. I used to go to the Royal Anglesey for top tips on racing tactics when sailing a Cadet, not that it made me very fast!We now cruise in a Westerly from the River Exe. Fair winds to you!

I picked that up when I was the third western yacht into the USSR after the 1917 revolution.. It was a long time ago!

For the high water shouldn't it be half way between 1.6 and 2.0, so your paper should have said 1.8 not the 2.8 ?

Quite right. Thanks for pointing it out. You're the second person to notice this. A slip of the pen but thank goodness it doesn't alter the principle being made! Too late to alter it now I fear.

I was in Miami and thought it must be a mistake but the high tide at the main ship channel Government cut, and next one north ( a couple hours walking distance) was an hour apart. Can not assume away the other factors.
