Hey everyone I am so so humbled by all the nice comments here and in-world! Gosh, I pushed this out so fast that OF COURSE there are a million aspects of what SL is/can be are missing but the initial goal I think is achieved: a personal love-letter that lets residents (and a few Lindens) speak about their transformation, facilitated through this blank canvas, call it a game, call it NOT a game, whatever = SL is truly what YOU make it! No algo pressure, no points or scores, just community and expression, exploration and growth through "getting in touch" with the self, with others and also with of course commercial activity but not one dominated by big monopolies controlling the market, no: you and you and again YOU in charge! Ok, enough says my inner Draxtor, stop it or KZbin will "cancel" your comments or Strawberry gets upset that she has to yet moderate another rambling diatribe by yrstruly. Just want to say - again - THANK YOU SL for changing MY LIFE for the better!

Wow Philip called it the Wild West. That’s what I always compared it to when I started back in 2007. It was crazy back then but in an amazing way. It’s a bit less like that now but still full of surprises at times. The creative aspect is amazing. I’ve actually become emotional from the beauty of what people have created.

I read Snow Crash before I heard about Second Life. I was fascinated by the concept of the Metaverse. Instantly, I knew what it was: a 3d virtual representation of the internet, but with so much more. When I heard of Second Life, I was excited. I knew it was the Metaverse brought to life. But I didn't have a computer good enough to run it till 2008. And when I did, I wasn't disappointed. It was everything I thought it would be. The only thing it lacked was the ability to experience it through virtual reality technology. But we're getting closer and closer to being able to achieve that. I'm proud to be a part of this virtual world, this 3D internet where I can be anyone and anything I want to be.

Thank you for your comment and I got reminded: when I discovered SL in early 2007 just a few months ago I finished Snow Crash in this STRANGE synchronicity of events if you will ... why did I read Snow Crash only then and not when it came out, SciFi obsessed as I was/am? Why did I make the connection with SL being the closest to the Metaverse although I had NOT seen anything on mainstream media about it (living under a rock with no TV perhaps hehehe)? Fascinating!

As soon as Marianne came on the screen i lost it and started to cry. i used to be in the family community and had a small kid avatar for a while, and thats when i got to meet and become friends with Marianne and hands down one of the sweetest, most supportive people I've ever met. A flood of memories came back from the years of us being friends on plurk, talking and hanging out with them at Camp and other fun things, it was a blast from the past and so wonderful to see. I saw this a while ago but am now deciding to comment on it. My main SL account just turned 18 two days ago now (March 22nd, 2006). What a wild ride SL has been for me. It's wild to think that when I joined a phone was required for a code, and flexi prims were THE big thing, with sculpties on the horizon. The grids were separate and things were much more simple. Second Life has grown, it has in many ways improved (I would love for a new fresh built viewer for more modern hardware) and I still log in darn near every day, which isn't bad since I didn't start really messing around with SL until sometime in April as my first login was a very "What now?" moment. Most of my time is spent as a roleplayer in the world. I like telling stories and making characters with my friends, and while I do call it a game as an easy descriptor and how I treat my existence there, I do fully get others consider it something else and I respect that. As for the video itself it is really well done, honestly one of, if not the best video about Second Life made in the last... I don't know how long. It really gets across what Second Life IS better than most other attempts.
@Draxtor

Hi Revenile and thank you for the kinds words! And interesting how you mention that "What now?" moment that SL provides = I am convinced that this is part of the secret sauce: a invitation to play to discover. And that can be quite scary for some folks who are so used to having their entertainment ready to go, all nicely packaged etc. SL tickles that intrinsic motivational appendix whereever in us it is, buried by the MACHINE if you like, and before we know it we embark on a journey that is so so WILD!

I remember meeting Philip in Pioneer Square. I remember the original idea of the space man. I remember when some of the friends permanently de-rezzed IRL. I remember being a SL Mentor and one of the very few to have access to Orientation, and Teen worlds and being called to deal with giving new avatars the walk through and getting notification of a griever. So, many rez- day parties. So many creations. My favorite was a weekly Treasure Hunt to invite avatars to visit sponsors into their worlds. I have more TS locations that don't exist anymore than still work. ... I'm thinking about returning to see the new features.

Second Life is a metaverse. Its whatever we want it to be. The people make it. 18 plus years here so far. Nice to watch this. Its definitely not a game lol. A game has to have a definitive goal. For the last 10.5 years SL has been my social life and an Exploration of my self . I have experienced the greater lose of my hearing and suffered seclusion and frustration of wanting to belong in a Cruel cultural binary social world . In SL I can be ME without shame and be accepted as my true self . Prior to SL I sought self expression in so called christion religious social circles but only to experience self-rejection to conform to a the make-believe world of so called Reality . In SL People are Reall not what they are conforming to . I am not anti this or anti that , to each their own life and that is beautiful but what is "real " to me may not be "real" to others . After nearly fifteen years spent in SL being an entrepreneur, an obsessive writer, a tutor, photographer, and confidante/friend to all whose paths I've crossed, it is time for me to move on and place my focus entirely on first life. Yet I will always be thankful for the creative and social space that was afforded to me, and the fond memories I've collected from a decade and a half on the grid. But above all of that, is the gratitude for the access to a platform that allowed me to meet the love of my life and fiance, who happened to be half a world away. The impossible truly is possible in SL; I wish all the residents an amazing life/lives that fills their hearts with purpose and joy every single day.
@Draxtor

Thank you for your comment. I would be curious to know about this distinction between first and second life? If SL is an outlet for creativity, when time is spent expressing oneself as one's true self, how can that ever be separate from life in the physical world? I been trying to investigate this question for 17 years now in countless reportages and features and I am NOT pretending I found an answer. There may only be as many diverse answers as there are people in SL!
@talulashippe

@@Draxtor I highly suggest you check out the roleplaying communities, something not touched on in your documentary (although I believe you've tapped into the more "RPG" style sims in other videos --not quite the same as the non-metered collaborative writing I'm speaking on). There is a very clear distinction between reality (what I mean when I refer to as "first life") and the time spent as a resident in Second Life. Even with the acknowledged dissonance between fictional roleplay narratives, actual unplugged reality, and the awkward stasis in-between of being out of character on Second Life, there seems a rather clear distinction between assuming a role and having actual lived experience. It's just one example of the divide between the two lives, but I feel it's one of the most exaggerated ones because roleplay is acknowledged as entirely fictional. What fifteen years of attending to my second life almost daily taught me, is that the draw of such a platform is to pursue happiness unabashedly and I'm not sure I agree with that. Additionally, the idea that 'expressing one's true self' in a virtual sense is actually productive, I find worrisome and as removed from self-actualization and self-acceptance as one can get. After a while Second Life felt like a padded room, where the interactions I had with other residents existed inside this insulated bubble of affection that could pop the instant the other resident felt the slightest bit of resistance to affirming their happy alternate reality. Conflict, if allowed to persist, was toxic and bred from unchecked narcissism. Or with a simple block button, one could erase all signs of opposition completely and live happily ignorant and sheltered again, surrounded by only enablers. Ninety nine percent of relationships with other residents were recognizably fickle and fair weather. But that's how things are online, as most of us know. The instance where two people can transcend the online sphere and actually grow with acceptance as friends or more, was and is exceptionally rare. I hope this proves to be useful insight for you, Drax. I will always find SL fascinating as a microcosm that examines how purpose plays out in an individual's life. I am only too sad for the people who never see their purpose realized, in either lives. Life is too short, in my opinion, to whittle away the days sitting at a computer. But these are the times we live in. As tech like the Apple Vision fast approaches market, touting promise of increasing and deepening relevant connection, I fear it's growing increasingly difficult to see that as truth. I choose to unplug. The containment of artistry, for me, requires developing a body of work with lasting impact, not fleeting experiences with other writers where I give everything and own nothing. it's time to write a book and get paint under my fingernails again. It's time to get married, have a family, build a legacy that won't dissipate with such fleetingness as even what we perceive to be the very deepest and longest lasting online relationships. I choose the visceral, the tangible, and the full sensory experience that is reality.
@Draxtor
@Draxtor 11 ай бұрын
hi @@talulashippe = very familiar with various role-playing communities and find them fascinating. Matter of fact did MANY shorter reportages and one feature but need to do more for sure! And would love to talk more with you about the nature of reality. What you are describing, the dangerous side of a life online if you will, can happen in the physical realm as well and for me this a function of alienation under capitalism. It really is an issue that the super structure imposes on individuals, not the online world or the physical realm. Individual improvement through working on the self is important but without community free from the economic pressures most people in the world are under? The true self and true communities will continue to have a HARD time becoming sustainable enriching entities. I read a LOT of books and I interact with folks in SL who do to. I truly believe you can have meaningful and very deep relationships in a world like SL, which - as we explored in the previous feature - is fundamentally different from algorithmically driven social media spaces: there is no machine serving investors pushing you into a direction of what to do and what to buy!

Second Life is my addiction. I noted this some years ago now. One of the main reasons I enjoy exploring Second Life is how is its organic nature. You can travel through and explore the same region/s three times in a year and see the new with the old, just like traveling any developing part of the world where there is always something new among the old, or the historic, to reference it that way. This was a very interesting video to watch so far, it's really fun to learn how SecondLife has come to what it is today and the evolution of it. Peasant, Apple, Baby and then some of the other names on there I have all gotten to spend time with over voice and chat with. I'm glad they got picked for this and their opinions are heard. Coming to SL has been a humbling experience, but also very interesting hearing many other's paths. If you ever want to have another person to interview on the Builder Side of things, I've own a Sim for almost two years now. I'd be happy to speak with and talk about my journey of four years so far. I've yet to ever meet Strawberry, but I too also keep hearing about her. - rogue.nightingale
@Draxtor
@Draxtor Жыл бұрын
Thx Rogue for this comment! To clarify: after the initial casting call for this project literally EVERYONE who responded got picked. THat was the concept: to tell the story of SL through voices of current residents and then weaving in the historical context with Philip and Marianne the throughline. A few folks did not follow up which is fine, coz otherwise this would have been a 20 hour film (and it was originally a 120 min first draft!) so yeah, that's it. Lots of writing on paper after interviews, then crafting a narrative and such. Strawberry - you may meet her some day. Tell her she owes me 2 Linden Dollars hihihihihihi

Greetings! I have been an active participant in Second Life since 2007, utilizing this platform primarily for global communication and exchange. Although Second Life offers various gaming and role-playing opportunities, I do not consider myself a gamer nor engage in RP activities. Instead, I leverage the platform for extending worldwide communication and conducting PR, blogger &, author activities. I view the virtual world as a remarkable tool for connecting with individuals on a global scale, fostering relationships, and shaping perceptions. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Second Life a very happy birthday! It is incredible to witness the growth and evolution of this virtual world, and I am grateful to be a part of it, contributing to its vibrant community. Well, that was another amazing Drax Movie! For me, Second Life means raising funds to feed very needy children in Kenya at our Lavender Field for Feed a Smile - and having a great time doing it. I've been on SL doing so for the past 13 1/2 years and have been able to provide hundreds of thousands of meals for the children. The fabulous thing about it is that I am constantly meeting new and talented and caring people. I'm so grateful to Linden Lab for making this possible - and to Drax for making it public in a way that even the people who cannot fathom the idea of Second Life begin to understand its appeal. For example, the Drax File 16 - made years ago - still helps me to explain what the heck I'm doing here! Happy Birthday Second Life - Here's to the next 20!

It was fun to see Drax’s experience in SL. It may not be fully representative of SL from my own experience but it’s not better or worse. It’s just different. Just like in RL, we are all different people living specific lives, so everyone views their time here in different ways. For me, the answer to the question; What is SL? is a technical description that varies in depth depending on who is asking. I feel the important questions are; What can SL be for you? and What are all of the things that SL can offer? After being here for so many years, I carved out a routine and stick with activities that I have enjoyed. That led me to frequent the same places that have people who share a similar experience. When you come to SL, you kind of bounce around and check as many things out as you can until something strikes your interest. Then you expand into other interests and activities. Before you know it, you have a home, (in some cases a business or job), some favorite hangouts and a bunch of activities that you enjoy. But the best part is establishing friendships and being a part of community. I have also connected with some of my SL friends in RL. It would be great if this movie led to a regular segment that briefly showcases different people and their personal experiences in SL. Thank you for putting this movie together and happy 20 years SL!

Very well said! Matter of fact, one quote from Mazidox Linden that I had in the early draft comes to mind. I asked every protagonist what they thought of the name (i used Marianne's answer which fit best with the narrative flow), and Mazidox said: "Well, you could just call it 'Life'!" 🙏

My RL job was SL real Estate for 10 years until last year and it saddens me that I had to leave it. If you're reading this, and I hope you do, SL was stronger when everything was made inworld and everyone could create THROUGH second life. The moment that 3D building ( mesh ect) was introduced into SL ,the residents started to go away. Not everyone can build on Cinema 4D and Blender, everyone could build with the SL building tools tho. The passion for creation was lost somewhere there and talented 3D creators took the step. Which is fine, but they are fewer than the rest of SL community. Bring building tools inside the viewer once again. I totally agree that people from the community are needed in the leadership, and thank you for considering hiring people for that matter. We, guys are the SL. I hope mobile version will bring back the glory of our world. P.S. Can someone talk with Twitch so we can stream and spread the world? Its stupid that they have banned a game that have so many controls over whats PG, Moderate and Adult that you cant miss out and get banned. If you want to stream building you can litterally have everyone that watching you and try to enter your space outside of your parcel for fun! :p

Hi Korris and thank you for your comment. As a HUGE fan of prims and collaborative building I agree with your take on this being a point of strength for SL. But I would say despite the "dominance" of mesh, the collaborative aspect is STILL very very strong, if not stronger (numbers wise!) than even in the hype days of 06/07. I have lots of videos on that subject on this channel and on my own. Would love to discuss this more. Come back and we shall meet? The Twitch thing bothers me too tbh ! But I think there are talks happening so fingers crossed!

I'm just now realizing that Phillip Rosedale may have been the inspiration for James Halliday in (the movie) Ready Player One. Every time I see him talking in this video, I think "Halliday! My dude!" He's supposedly a rendition of Mark Zuckerberg, but I think now, that the comparison was only a speculation. Halliday is an exaggerated Phillip. The Oasis is an exaggerated Second Life. Sorry if that's nothing new, I've been out of the loop for a while.

Wow. Just wow. @Draxtor, I seriously hope you compete with this documentary on one of those film festivals around the world. You may not win any prizes, but you will certainly make your fellow movie directors _think_ about your work. I was also told that this would be just a "10 minute" short :) - not an hour (was it _really_ an hour? It felt like it was much less than that...). Awesome editing. Loved the cuts from 'historic' footage. Well, I loved everything, to be honest, but I'm strongly biased. I wonder what Zuckerberg would think if he saw this, now that the sun is setting on Horizon Worlds. You Metaverse wannabies out there... you're doing everything wrong. Watch _this_ documentary and _learn_ ! Well done. Thanks so much, and also big thanks to Linden Lab for sponsoring this (and other!) endeavours. May this video go viral and reach those who, after twenty years, _still_ haven't heard about Second Life :)

Gwyn do you have Zuck's phone number? We should text him the link to the movie. Very nice documentary. It captures the essence of what SL is - and isn't. I've seen the changes over the years, and mostly would call them improvements. All of them were greeted with protests, ironically. Sculpts, Mesh, grid merge... the fierce privacy debates around a resident-created "security system". SL is a lot of things, for a lot of people, and IMO defies a clear definition. It's a game, a social space, a workspace, it's art, it's science... and in the end, despite many attempts to create a "better SL", it's still the only successful such space.

Great documentary of what Second Life was and is! I'd been interested in online socialization since I first discovered chat rooms in an AOL trial, and especially the exploration of self that comes with virtual environments. Microsoft V-Chat got things rolling for me, but I was interested in Second Life from the beginning (just didn't have a computer that could run it). It's helped me find and explore my inner self and discover a persona that I identify with far more strongly than the body I was born in. In short, Second Life has helped me more than any other platform shape who I am. I've made a number of friends, watched sanctuaries come and go (but some are still around!), and am grateful that it came to fruition. I look forward to what the future has in store!
