Epic stuff family! 27:00 is why our offroad caravans in Sarff Effrieka have that back corner cut off at at least 35 to 45deg for better departure angle. I really believe, along with steerable undercart, that that could be the best mod you could do on that van.
@maarten_notjustagrip Жыл бұрын
Id also plate the underside with some 8mm steel from behind the wheels to the back, and mount all the rackage on the back higher, or elsewhere, then you can happily just drag its arse over anything.
@alanhat5252 Жыл бұрын
@@maarten_notjustagrip the chassis rails did the job this time but I agree, some plating would probably be good. And move the spare wheel out of the way.
@maarten_notjustagrip Жыл бұрын
@@alanhat5252 I must respectfully disagree about the chassis rails. Without them being "bridged", they just sit either side of whatever protrusion you're hanging up on. If the whole rear end was a full width skid plate, it would help a lot. That caravan has a dismal departure angle.

As soon as you go over 25mph (40km/h) the mud flies off the tyres, the rest falls off as it dries (it shrinks as it dries) though you can end up with little dried balls rattling around in hollow sections for months.

This is absolutely the coolest rig on the planet! I have never seen a camp trailer on air ride. I have never seen any air ride vehicle that has the ability to control ride height from one side vs the other. I will say that the hitch set up is the oddest thing I have ever seen. Have you ever considered installing winches? It looks like you could use them from time to time. Also, watching you get unstuck, I have wondered if you have any kind of lockers in your diffs front and rear? I have a limited slip locker in the rear of my Chevy SUV and it makes a HUGE difference in slippery conditions. Years ago, I had one in the rear diff of my Semi truck(Prime Mover) and it was a game changer in winter weather.

@alanhat5252 Жыл бұрын
Considering the amount of precision machining there is in them CV joints are amazingly cheap (American-style pairs of Hookes joints are even cheaper though less reliable) but, as mentioned, they're far enough inside for labour to be expensive. I changed mine on my RangeRover (probably less than a quarter the weight) & it took me a long day to do each.

With a little calm rationale, planning and teamwork, most challenging obstacles are overcome. Your videos will show that some roadways and gates will need widening and flatter grades for your size truck & c'van. But what's the fun in that. For emergency cases, do you have either mechanical or electrical hitches or straps to pull or guide/steer/maneuver the truck or c'van around or through obstacles? May need to fabricte some foldable or bolted on inclined steer pads for impassable grade issues.

Greetings from Cape Town, RSA 🇿🇦 . I’ve only recently found your channel. And now I have serious toy envy. Well in your case I guess it’s called home envy. Your channel and video creation is really professionally done. Please may I ask a question? I find myself screaming at the Tv, but you never answer me. lol… Max Traxx. They’re an amazing tool to have… if you have a traditional 4x4 setup. But in your case, do you not think it would be better to have aluminium track pads about 3m long that the German over land vehicles use? Similar to what the Volvo and MAN trucks use? Don’t get me wrong. I was amazed how well they worked when you got stuck in the mud. But can’t help but feel if you had longer, wider aluminium tracks you would have put less stress on the CV joint, and would have had more forward momentum to pull the truck and van forward. And also in the video above where there was a steep drop off, these would help with making less departure angle on the van. ✌🏻 keep on truckin’

@@thecartwrights sorry, but if that's the best available it's very disappointing. It uses a half-length Panhard rod rather than a Watt's linkage to locate the tops of the axles, the axles aren't linked together to compensate each other's movement & they've used an expensive long-throw damper rather than putting it in front of the axle where there is less movement (& a cheaper, more readily available one would work just as well). Similarly, the airbags could be in front of the axle for a shorter throw though this is likely less of an issue. I can see it's good (particularly the lateral location being high & central to centralize the body's roll centre vertically to some extent) but there are off-the-peg improvements readily available.
