If you combine this series with its sequal "The Prisoner" series, you have one of the most interesting story lines in TV history. I was just old enough and precocious enough to appreciate the final seasons of "Secret Agent Man" and I was fascinated by "The Prisoner", still one of the most original series ever done and relevant today. Thanks for letting me see the early story of John Drake.

I love Patrick McGoohan R.I.P. Everything he does is quick and deliberate, speech, movement, facial expressions, and he does if all with a great voice and most of the time with that slightly hunched head tilt and piercing stare. Three of my favorite movies are that much better because of him. Braveheart, Silver Streak, and of course,...Scanners! If James Bond was not only a spy but a Private detective he would have been the best choice. What a great guy, didn’t accept the role because he wouldn’t kiss another woman. Who would want to if married to Joan Drummond, very attractive even in to her golden years! Damn I wish he didn’t turn down so many roles.

Great insight on actor. I will read up more on him. We on this side of the big pond were introduced to McGoohan through his roles in DISNEY movies (THE NINE LIVES OF TOMASINA. and ALIAS DR SYN). When ITV syndicated DANGER MAN we got the SECRET AGENT trimming repackage. From there more movies such as ICE STATION ZEBRA and lots of TV roles.

I could never understand why dear old dad always thought they were more comedy to him. Later in life dear old dad and mom sat me down and told me what did in real life. And mom was no slacker, on and off through the years as needed. Between training and leading special native gurilla units and being a case officer (master spy), dear old dad and mom were, . . . think of Jason Bourne, married, with children. It's a life I would never want for my children but it was a life perfect for me.

And yes, Number Two calls Number Six "Drake" in, I think it was Fallout, the second to last episode of The Prisoner. McGoohan has denied that Number Six was John Drake, but that was probably because he did not have the rights to the character.

Thanks, Alannah; my experience exactly, except that I was 12, growing up in Florida, and seeing it called "Secret Agent". For years I treasured a little newspaper photo of Patrick Mcgoohan. I admired him for his brains and daring, as much as for his good looks; and appreciated his sensibility in focusing on his work, instead of chasing after the ubiquitous Barbie dolls he encountered in the line of duty.

You can see how the show strained some with the half-hour running time. My favorite scene, purely for comical reasons, is when he visits the suspects and has his drink. The conversation is ridiculously rushed, like the flower scene from The Room. When they brought the program back with an hour-long run time, it really came into its own. Like Mission Impossible, it had more time to develop its sophisticated storylines and characters. Amazing show!

"My name is Drake, John Drake." So many things in this series where copied to the James Bond movies. I watched this series when I was about 10 or 12 and where mesmerised by it. Watching it now I think it was really good. It was well made and the director did a fine job as well as the musical director. He also did the music for the Simon Templar series. The camera angles and the dramatic music is top notch and todays tv series are not at all that good. I'm gonna search for The man from UNCLE and see if that also is as good as I remember it to be.

I used to watch this show when I was a kid. The theme song was great!!! Secret Agent Man. They giving you a number and taking away your name. Gina looked like Barbara Shelley with darkened skin so that she looked Italian. Barbara Shelley was a babe!!! 😍😍😍😍😍

I so liked Patrick McGoohan (as John Drake) in Secret Agent Man when I was in my teens way back. And the theme music was sweet. Thanks for posting. Good on ya mate.

Patrick McGoohan was offered the role of James Bond three times. He turned it down because he didn't like Bond's morality.

Danger Man started out as a half-hour series. Later Secret Agent came about and played for an hour with Johnny Rivers singing the opening.

Apparently, when the series was 1st commissioned, the TV network wanted a cheap clone of Bond (which was very popular at the time). When the scripts were given to Mcgoohan, he thought the main character was immoral (guns & girls). He suggested changing the Drake character to rely upon his brains & cunning. A man of principal.

These early episodes of danger man were shot two years before the first James Bond. So are you sure of what you wrote? (Danger man 1960, Dr No 1962)

Darryl Ruiz James Bond even took the classic line "My name is Bond, James Bond" from this series, you can hear Patrick say "my name is Drake, John Drake" in the first minutes of this episode.

This series became the template for high-brow, high-class espionage shows that followed. The great Patrick McGoohan set the bar very high. This original series is the best of its kind!! It's worth noting that acclaimed director, John Schlesinger, was an assistant director on this series.

On the BBC, Danger Man was the show's name. In the US, the name was changed to Secret Agent with the most fantastic theme song, "Secret Agent Man" sung by the extraordinarily talented Johnny Rivers!!
