it's one of the oddly realistic things about characters like abe, old timer WWII vets. there may not be anyone at the controls these days, but the weapons systems are still active. i had a grand-dad that was former canadian RAF and developed pretty bad delusional schizophrenia and had to be cared for by the psych floor of the hospital. despite thinking he was next in line for the british crown and offering to give me a yacht that didn't exist, he was still sly. he went missing at one point, he was struck by a moment of lucidity, resulting in him faking taking his meds, snatching the nurse/orderly's keycard for the elevator without them knowing, sneaking past the security desk on the psych floor, accessing the elevator, sneaking past the front lobby desk, and eventually being found waiting for a bus a few blocks away. i was present on a city bus when some drunk jackwad started up with an old WWII vet in his uniform(guess he was going to some VFW thing or something). i don't remember what exactly the drunk guy said, but i remember it was something i know i damn well wouldn't have tolerated if *I* had fought at the Battle of Berlin, and i know that old vet cold-cocked his @$$ so hard he gave him *shell shock* . i've seen footage of a 99 yr old US vet handed an M-1 garand for the first time in half a century and still be able to take the wings off a fly with it.

funny thought: missiles are tall pointy objects often with red lights at the top. so are christmas trees. abe is ex-military from WWII/early cold-war and knew the exact model by thruster noise and audible launch sequence. IE Abe is familiar with this military installation, either being stationed here or being stationed at another site nearby and being aware of the program. in his semi-senility, he remembers there's a silo here, but can't quite make the connection, so his brain is glossing a memory of christmas tree hunting instead. Abe may be way more of a Bad@$$ then we realize and we often forget that.
