THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR SHARING WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED, i aquired two budgies out of no where, my sons uncle brought them . i have never been a bird owner, but i believe that if you haver a pet or anything that lives with you and is dependent on you that you are obligated to learn about them, as much as you can, and ive learned a decent amount, but it has taken weeks of non stop surfing and trying steps... the most helpful thing was imitating the beak grinding , it has been phenomenal advice.. thank you

You have such a wonderful bird! I hope I can get a goldfinch companion too some day. (I also just noticed that birds move their entire socket to look around; not their eyeballs. o.o This slightly explains why owls move their entire heads to look around. Cool!)
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, you're quite right - birds generally move their heads to scan their environment, because their anatomy and field of vision renders this necessary. They do have "micromovements" of the eyeballs, too, it's just that due to the eyes being set at the sides of their head, this doesn't get them very far ;) This has quite the effect on their personality, too, as we've looked at here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpjNhGSCma55rJY That said, owls seem to be a special case - would be interesting to find out if they can move their eyeballs at all!

Yes! I've watched that! ^-^ I'm so glad you made a video on that! I'm pretty good at reading animal body language and am self-aware of my actions thanks to many experiences I'm thankful for and of course, my pet bunny, who's also a prey animal. I've had some fun encounters with crows too. As an artist going into animation, it's very important for me to understand body language and natural instincts so that the characters and environments will be more accurate and appealing. This also helps me interact with pets my friends may have, and has been surprisingly useful for catching spiders and other bugs safely at school, college, and even work. I noticed that many times, people treat animals like they would a toy that's supposed to do something or respond to what you do by some default. (Not in a way that the animal is lesser or a play-thing. Just the way they try to predict its actions.) It's great to know basic ways to put yourself in an animal's position to get an idea of what they may be thinking/seeing, and you clearly know how! :) Random story: Years ago, there were 2 birds that fell down our house's drain pipe and got stuck there. As a kid/teen, I was naturally curious about animals you see around but never have the chance to see up close, so I wanted to catch what I heard scratching and chirping in there. There was a spot where the water spout could easily be separated from the part in the ground, so I got a pair of winter gloves (even though it was summer) and attempted to catch the bird, but it flew out the moment I opened the pipe. I thought it was just one until I heard more scratching in there and realized there was a second one. This time, I put my hand over the gap and then into the pipe to hold the bird before opening it completely. Of course it was scared, but I wanted to bond with it for an hour or two until my parents got home before letting it go since I saved its life. I put it in a large, transparent plastic storage container and dug up some earthworms. I had no idea how long it'd been trapped, so I figured the birds were hungry and I wanted to do a friendly gesture as thanks for putting up with me. I knew that a friend's cat didn't like being watched while eating, so I wanted to see how the bird would respond to my actions. I backed up, but it wasn't until I turned my head to the side as if pretending to look away that it hopped forward and accepted the first one. I think I fed it 5 worms. I brought it indoors and cracked open a few sunflower seeds for it, showed the bird to my parents and told them about how they were trapped, then when picked it up with the gloves to let it go, it almost didn't struggle and the alarm-chirps weren't alarm-calls this time. Outside, I gently placed it on the wood of the deck. Its mate was calling for it. The bird hopped away a little, hopped back toward me, stood looking at me for a good 10 seconds or so, then flew off toward its mate. I remember seeing a bird that landed on our backyard fence about a week later and looked directly at me while chirping, but it kept its distance. I stood still while looking at it, but it flew away and I never saw it again. That little moment felt nice though, like it recognized me and maybe wanted to say hello, but still had fear, the way it should feel toward humans as a wild bird. (Sorry I typed so much. ^.^')

And there he is again :) Interesting video that is very important to know. Whether it is an outside cat you want to pat, or a dog that is not yours and you want to stroke, understanding their body language is the difference between getting a scratch or bite or not getting harmed at all. Like you mentioned there are plenty of ways to know how relaxed it is around you.. I note the way mine continues with his life when I am near him like you mentioned preening, eating and so on. But I forgot the slow blink one.. it could be that I took it for granted. Anyways... nice day and thanks for sharing.

@Blazemalta
@Blazemalta 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, certainly on a good path. When in not near him he is quiet and barely moves, when I'm near him his activity level goes up and he plays, preens, eats and is up to something. He even has this unique whistle when im leaving the room.. maybe its a "dont go" or something.. even my wife notes it. He still flies around and goes in and out of his cage 2 or 3 times a week when I have a lot of time. He's a sweet little fellow. He has got around 85-90% of adult plumage now. I will do some videos to show you in the coming days.... :)
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
That sounds amazing! Really looking forward to the videos :) I'd be curious about the unique whistle, too. Leporello does a pitiable "tsee-dee" in a falling minor 3rd when I leave and an angry "whit-whewie!" when I'm gone. I wonder what Kal says? There was a British study a few years ago that found that birds of the same species actually have different dialects, depending on their region of origin.

@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, well ill birds blink, too! If your bird sits around puffed up or doesn't move about in his cage, he may be sick indeed. (How to tell even if you're not home all day: if the droppings are in one spot as opposed to all over the cage, he hasn't been moving and might be ill.) If he starts sleeping during the day or worse, puts his beak under his wing, please take him to a vet immediately! Thanks for watching and hope your little friend is well.

With a new bird you better start here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mojIoHSpd8mCfNE Also I don't recommend getting wild-caught goldfinches. They don't adapt well to being in a cage and suffer physically as well as psychologically, get ill quickly and never become as tame. On the other hand, if you buy a cage-bred goldfinch, the birds won't have known anything other than captivity, so they tend to be both much, much easier to keep healthy (because their muscles and daylight cycles are different from wild birds) as well as to tame. If you can, I'd go back to the breeder and swap the wild catch for a bred goldfinch. Some less reputable breeders will offer wild-caught goldfinches because it is easier to catch one than to breed one, but this is a bad deal for both you and the caught bird. Good luck.

As said in the video, these tips work for all birds. In fact, this particular method works for most animals, even mammals.

Are birds in cages sufficiently content ? More canaries in cages hanging outside neighbors windows. So was wondering. It seems quite dreadful to me ...
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 4 жыл бұрын
You're right to be concerned! All birds, including canaries, need at least (!) 4 hours of free flight every single day. Not letting them fly free leads to muscle atrophy and all sorts of mental and physical health issues.

Leporello the Goldfinch - Birdtaming Tips & Tricks Thanks! it takes much time and effort to tame, can i breed my canary with a female goldfinch by the way ?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
Sure! You'll find that over time, taming will become easier and faster - it's a learned skill like most things that gets better with practise, amazingly even new birds will trust you more easily over time. Breeding goldfinch mules is much easier with a male goldfinch and a female canary. The other way around, as you suggest, is possible, but is much more difficult to achieve because canaries are mellower than goldfinches.
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
PS, in case this isn't obvious, one of the most important differences between canaries and goldfinches is their respective dietary requirements. Goldfinches require a high quality goldfinch mix - they won't survive long on the simpler canary mix. Just thought I'd throw that out there!

@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch Жыл бұрын
Many birds do not like to be touched. Budgies can learn to trust you so that you can touch them, but it takes time. Give your bird space and wait for him to come to you. Don't force him, it will not work. He will approach you once he trusts you enough.

@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
That's a good question! I reckon your bird will still see your eyes but they'll definitely see them better if you take them off. Perhaps you can start establishing a bond with your bird without the glasses first and then put them back on when your bird responds consistently. Let us know how it goes :)

@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I couldn't capture a video of him doing the actual slow blink in time for publishing, so I used footage of a regular blink. You'll recognise the slow blink when it happens with your birds, it's very distinct from regular blinking, more like a really slow (and often just half-) shutting of the eyelids.

Also I have a question my white Zebra Finch are really nice and they feel comfortable with me and they do the slow blink but sometimes the female doesn't let me play or feed the male and they are in the same cage and they love each other that the female doesn't let me take the male out of the cage and the male has to stay in the cage because of her and I couldn't deal with her at all what do I do?
