Unbelievable coverage of the Anthracite Mining Era in Northeastern PA. I was born in 1950, and both grandfathers worked the mines and died early in 1955 and 1962. They both were in their early 60s. From then until you guys started exploring and filming, I had no idea how treacherous their daily lives were, just going to work! Amazing work guys documenting their history and that of Pennsylvania's contribution to the industrial age of America. Show be a college elective for anyone in eastern Pennsylvania. Well done!

Hi Phil. Dravo (pronounced dra-vo) was a large company in Pittsburgh that, among many other things, built landing ships (LST's) during WWII. My dad worked there in the 60's. Their main plant, where they built barges and towboats, was on Neville Island near Pittsburgh. I can literally see their old place from my front porch. They were so big, at one time, that Interstate 79 has what are known locally as "the s bends" because initial proposed route of the interstate hwy was redone to avoid the Dravo yards on Neville island. To buy out Dravo would have been cost prohibitive. Funny thing is that the s bends are hazardous. Trucks overturn in those bends on a monthly basis. Thanks for the great content. Your living my life.

Those Haded slopes must have been a nightmare to work in, they would start at the bottom and work upwards letting gravity do the work for them as they picked away at the coal seam, at the bottom there may have been a drag line conveyor. That vertical slot you found looks like a typical mineral stope. The wobbly slimy stuff as a technical name Snottite, it is a bacterial growth that only grows in sulphur rich environments with a constant water source that turn the sulphur into sulphuric acid. When you have a sloping vein like you see here, the roof and floor are usually solid rock or shale, and the seam or vein is in between, the roof is normally called the Hanging Wall and the floor is the Foot Wall.

In Florida, the closest we have to any of this is limestone tunnels and formations, underground rivers and you have to see them with scuba gear, or watch a video. Dig a five foot hole in Florida and you hit water. I dug an underground fort once, just a square pit, about five foot deep. It was "moist and humid" in the hole. I covered the top with boards and some dirt. Needless to say there wasn't much to it. It looked like a great place for huge cockroaches to hang out. It was so humid and wet. The hole was worthless, but it was a fun project.

Another Amazing adventure for sure!! You know it had to armchair the google. That Dravo company does appear to be historically significant to the cultural industrial and war-time history of the USA in toto. Oh found it: Dravo-Doyle Company was formed in 1898 to handle sale and installation of machinery, and it appears to have become re-absorbed into Dravo Corporation in 1930. That piece of kit has been there a very long time by the looks of it :)

I think the coal miners may have intersected an old mineral mine where the bridge is, it does not look like a typical coal workings as coal was laid down in flat beds, and was pushed up by geological movement but very rarely vertical, that looks more typical of old 19th century lead, copper, silver or gold mining. Don't think Pennsylvania had a gold rush so possible lead or copper.

Understanding that Tommy knockers are simple, just like the quartz crystal 🔮 chip in your cell phone can capture sound and video data, the crystals in the walls of the mine the minerals contain crystals too and store sounds of people working picking from the past , nothing to be superstitious or worried about. Certain atmospheric conditions and or vibration can release them , just like your phone vibrates right 👍......So the blasting and afterwards the quartz is still vibrating and recording and play back is possible during vibration....

What do you think about these down state WV mines who’s been accused by the locals of purposely flooding out their mines? I’m from the tippity top FU part of the state, but from the videos I’ve watched I’m finding certain things questionable as to the orange colored rock & build up onto the rocks. IDK I’ve seen that same color from iron build up coming from natural springs locally in the upper Ohio Valley & Southwestern PA region

The great trees of old left their remnants in many forms. You guys take an awful chance. You just never know when you're going to encounter a situation in the structure around you that is primed to come crashing down. It's just waiting on a butterfly to land on it before it can finally hold no longer, especially with so many wooden timbers in varying stages of decay. May the ALMIGHTY keep you safe.
