This is what I like about your approach of tutorial videos. You explain in precise detail how to achieve volume on a mini, how to track where the light source is, how to apply the paint in a deliberate manner, how to achieve your goal and then pull it all together. Where as other videos just say do this and your done without any real direction.

I know I'm super late to this party, but I'm just getting back into painting minis for the first time since I was a kid. So here's my question: In other videos I've watched, the basecoat defined as color blocking for the entire miniature. Going from this definition, is it fair to say that this technique - which goes from a glossy black primer to value sketching to layering - skips the basecoat entirely? Or perhaps this video is advocating for using layering as the mechasim to apply your basecoat rather than applying a solid block of color? Outstanding video, by the way. I've learned so much from you already. Looking forward to getting the rest of my supplies and putting this knowledge to work.

@Zumikito3 жыл бұрын
what are the bases made of? Assuming there is something on them, sure, you can paint anything like this :)
@Kunshi6663 жыл бұрын
@@Zumikito For the white one, the base is Ulthuan Grey (It's a sister's color scheme heavily inspired by your Sons of the Phoenix tutorial). And the black one is Black Legion so good old Abaddon Black base
@Zumikito3 жыл бұрын
@@Kunshi666 oh lol I thought you mean the actualy bases, not basecoats! now I get it...yes, definitely it can work. For black, your reflections will have multiple degrees of grey. For "white" you still need to find the reflections somehow, but other than that start darker (say celestra grey) and build up to ulthuan grey (or a little bit lighter if you want). Also for the white basecoat, consider giving shades blue tint if you like it. But yes, it can definitely work.

@Zumikito3 жыл бұрын

@@Zumikito Thanks a lot. I'm blind apparently. Was looking for them when watching the video but somehow I missed the one time they appeared.. So that pinkish highlight is from adding ivory ? Is that just a subtler way to highlight than with white ? Apologies for the obvious questions .. I'm at a stage when I don't yet know the techniques and colour properties enough to trust my judgement. So it's nice to have some sort of recipe to follow and be able to concentrate more on execution.
@Zumikito3 жыл бұрын
@@Noir_Raven hey man totally get it, never feel ashamed for asking a question! Color recipe wasnt exactly obvious from the vid 😅 the ivory has a bit of yelliw in it so by adding it you don't lose as much saturation (which would be the case with white). In general, I like to add ice yellow or ivory for highlight colors so they keep their saturation. It is not gonna make a HUGE difference here though

This is awesome! I'd just like to point out that this is a camera/photo technique, not really something to do for tabletop play. When you have a lot of these figs on the table, the unnatural highlights can actually cause an "uncanny valley" effect if you aren't viewing every model from the 'Golden Angle'. Awesome for shadowbox dioramas and 2d images like pics and video, but not as awesome in person unfortunately.
