In the late days of war there were four German officers that were on the front lines in Yugoslavia. Since invaders controlled most of Yugoslavia still at that point, the tides of war turned. Those four officers were often visiting local tavern. They played with cards and usually they would get drunk sometimes. Since they did not know that the owner of tavern knew German they were always speaking about their plans, orders etc. Of course, the tavern owner gave all informations to the resistance. He wrote down everything he could and than send out that info by his son that was 8 years old at the time. The son luckily was not aware of what he was carrying. Owner would pack the food and in it he would put small papers with the info. The unusual thing is info about "German escape plan". The officers got more drunk than usual on the last night before liberation of that area. They were speaking how they will have to use submarines and that they had to somehow be promoted to higher rank in order to escape. They also mentioned through the laughter how they will have to bring a lot of winter clothes. Next day there was a huge firefight for liberation and those officers were never see again. @old_guard24315 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, well done as usual. I have some observations based on two Antarctic deployments, Deep Freeze '77 and '78, aboard the Wind Class icebreaker USCGC Burton Island. (As USS Burton Island the ship participated in Operation Highjump. The U.S. Navy got out of the icebreaker business in the 1960's and gave their icebreakers to the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard generally does not get much money and therefore is always open to the concept of free ships.) Pack ice would always be a deal-killer for conventional WW2-era submarines. Loose pack could be handled - the Wikipedia article on Highjump shows a photograph of USS Sennet (SS-408) ballasted up in light pack ice. But you are at the mercy of the wind, which can consolidate the pack and make it tough going. The tumblehome formed by the ballast tanks would tend to drive a submarine under if it tried to force its way through. In addition, ice gets caught in the propellers and submarine propellers and shafts are not designed to deal with this. Deep Freeze '78 was the fourth consecutive Arctic-Antarctic deployment for the Burton Island, by that time an old ship by any standards and ancient for an icebreaker and we were overhauling and repairing engines on the fly all the way from Wellington, N.Z., south. When we hit the heavy pack, still quite a distance from McMurdo Sound, only two of six main engines were running and the pack ice stopped us dead until we could get a third engine up. A U.S. WW2 fleet sub would have the power: their diesels were the same as the Wind Class - 10 cylinder Fairbanks-Morse 38D8-1/8 with 1,600 horsepower. Four engines would be more than enough to power the much lighter (~1,500 tons compared with ~6,500 tons) and narrower hull through pack ice. But they would be driven under the pack and would lose propellers and blades fairly quickly.

However, KZbin’s content is not live like a television show and doesn’t premier at certain times, anyone can watch it at any point. If KZbin was considered to be air time, then wouldn’t you have to consider watching a video someone made on their phone and messaged to you as air time?

First let me say I enjoy your videos,Second,my paternal grandad (Edward A.Weeks) who was the Editor and chief of the Atlantic Monthly Magazine from 1928-1966 when my grandmother developed throat cancer he was given time to spend with her until her passing in 1969 at which point he became the publisher of the Atlantic Little Brown (the publishing arm of the Atlantic) he (grandfather) interviewed Winston Churchill during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz and they became friends as well as my grandfather being friends with Eisenhower and his closest friend was Edward R.Murrow but I can say with great confidence that both Churchill and Eisenhower told him that the Nazis had built a small U boat station in the Antarctic and this was confirmed from what I understand some years ago but I know in 2016-2017 we or maybe Great Britain found the remains of said base which had been built on the same location that a whaling station had been built but it was only large enough to resupply 2 boats and it could only be inhabited during the summer months but another interesting thing I think you’d be interested in is Winston (I’m on a first name basis with him lol) stayed with my grandparents in Boston during a visit to the states but this is not a Matt of public record,as I understand their had been a threat from someone in Boston against Winston and his or your countries version of the secret service demanded he not go to Boston but he ignored them and stayed with my grandparents for around a day and a half ,my grandmother was a avid photographer and she shot three rolls of 35 mm film of Winston in my family’s 8 floor walkup in Beacon Hill (my grandparents address was 59 Chestnut street on the corner of Charles and Chestnut) she used a Leica R or M 3 which I inherited when grandfather passed in 1989 I was 21 but I had been shown the album that grandmother had put together of Winston in the tub with a cigar and a glass of scotch with a towel over his unspeakables lol and another shot I remember was Winston at a typewriter again with a cigar in a ashtray,if you’d like to hear more and possibly with your help we might be able to retrieve the album from the university of Texas (I’m not sure if it’s A and m or the other university) they bought my grandfathers belongings for a Library that would had been in his name but it never came to fruition but I know it’s in those positions and I would love to see this become Public record,my name is Edward Weeks and address is 4442 Iroquois ave Jacksonville Florida 32210 my e mail is Edwardweeks67@gmail.com and I have many other amazing family who served in the war one of which was a pilot or copilot of a B25 that flew off the Hornet during the Dolittle raid (His Name was Sonny Vennable, not sure of spelling, that’s embarrassing) if you’d like to hear or read more please get back to me anytime, also my # is 904-537-9728,again I really enjoy what you do and if I were in a better place financially speaking I’d definitely support you , I care for my dad who has damentia and has needed my help now for 15 years and 6 years ago my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so things haven’t been easy and recently I found out I am in poor health and if I could get some of what I know to be fact it would give me great satisfaction and please know I’m not looking for any financial compensation in any way,my love of history and knowing my grandparents were under instruction not to talk or write about his (Winston’s stay) was something that bothered them greatly and by bringing this out in the open wound make them smile anyway thanks and keep up the amazing work you do and if I haven’t said it before thanks, Edward Augustus Weeks IV

I found it odd that the two SS generals who would be invaluable in the creation of such a base both disappeared at the end of World War Two. Heinrich “Gestapo” Mueller, who oversaw the Nazi forgery project (they successfully duplicated British pound notes and were close to duplicating American greenbacks), As well as Hans Kammler, the head of the secret weapons programs. All you’d then need to supply such an Antarctic base would be a front company for export and imports (in Argentina, naturally) and a couple of quality submarines, of the Type XXI variety. I sincerely apologize for feeding into the absurd notion of the secret Nazi Antarctic base. Sorry.

With regard to the submarine incursions into Antarctica, you mentioned the use of snorkels. German submarines were not equipped with snorkels until the type 21 class were built , close to the end of the war, and by that time the Nazi regime had run out of steam and resources. In any event, a snorkel is useless under ice. A submarine cannot penetrate 1 Metre of ice anyway, so the truth is no German submarine could have got close to the bases in winter.

As I mention in the video, the time U-530 was lingering in Argentinian waters was winter in the Antarctic. Who builds a base that's only accessible by sea for half the year? No U-Boat skipper would go hundreds of km beneath an ice sheet. That's the essential problem with theories based on the Antarctic - its one of the most hostile environments on earth. Argentina, however, well thats another story...

You brushed Operation Highjump aside too lightly, it was a very odd expedition and not linked with the Atomic explosions. There is no ice shelf where the supposed Nazi base is meant to be, so less potential pack ice and so while agree it is highly unlikely it isn't as impossible as you suggest. Desperate times call for desperate measures, perhaps until things were clearer in Argentina there was a hiding place in Antarctica? Making it about "aliens and UFOs" just distracts from a more mundane answer.

Way to go Mark. I really enjoyed the video.

The problem with the idea of an Antarctic nazi base is logistical. A base of the magnitude believed would require a constant stream of supplies. Food, clothes, medicine, spares, fuel, you name it, all would be required in increasing quantities from a collapsing regime in desperate need of raw materials of it's own.

What about Admiral Byrd?

Darn - a real shame when the truth gets in the way of a good story. A great doco, well presented.

Your video states that the British maintained several Arctic bases during WW2 so why couldn't the Germans? And Admiral Doenitz when addressing a class of cadets in 1944 did state that " an impregnable Shangrila " had been constructed somewhere in the world for Hitler Granted, it would be a logistical nightmare to supply such base in that area.

Kinda weird all the thing’s - stories admiral Byrd told in interviews and in his books ! But hey if you say nothing happened and there’s nothing to the stories then ok case closed ! I love your content but just look at what admiral byrd said in his own words !
