Secret of Mana Remake - PS4 - Early preorder copy gameplay (no commentary)

My physical preorder came early, so I decided to share some of the experience. The game crashed at the end - the joys of playing prerelease versions.
Sorry if my gameplay sucks, but I only played the original for the first time sometime last year.

As much as I am not fond of remakes in general, and being a huge fan of the SNES original game, I have to say few games have caused me the joy THIS game did. It has everything I would have liked. I did not learn about it until just few months ago, I managed to get it for PC and man, I could not let it go until I finished and got every single weapon orb and got every elemental to last level (even after I killed the last boss) Thanks so much for playing this AMAZING game. Thumbs up and subbed, of course!

Yeah, there are small bonus scenes when you stay at an inn at certain points in the story. They are missable, so watch out. For example, in the video I missed the first one which is available when you first reach Pandora, because I didn't even know it was a thing at that point.

This... "remake" is certainly interesting. To start with the good, the graphics look nice, but that should be a given. 25 years after its original release and we have lovely 3D models that capture the cartoony lighthearted aesthetic of the original game. Voice acting is clear, and fairly decent, and several of the songs are wonderful updated versions of the originals. ON THE OTHER HAND... This game is INCREDIBLY lazily made. No lip flaps for ANY of the characters? The script is literally identical to a game that compressed its dialogue into odd choppy bits because of memory limitations? Remixed tracks that fail in capturing the original spirit of the game? (7:22) Even enemy animations are odd in that you can't tell when you're allowed to hit them again. The original game had them be stunned, and when they started moving you could hit them again, but this game doesn't even have the courtesy of animating the enemies getting up to show they are vulnerable again. (26:10) Some cutscenes feature new camera angles to showcase the lazy animations, (3:38) but other cutscenes are identical, animations included, to a game from 25 years ago (15:00), complete with characters teleporting into facing different directions. (37:00) And what the heck is THIS random change in style for a single cutscene? (44:53) This game reeks of laziness, failing to update the majority of the game to the quality standards we expect from games nowadays. When I first saw the IGN footage from last September, I was excited, because it showed what appeared to be a proof of concept for a really nice looking remake of Secret of Mana. And then I heard that it would release in a few months and not a few years. This game shamefully cuts corners, and with some more time and polish could have been something much more wonderful. At least the gameplay is intact and still looks fun.

I think the saddest thing for me is the inconsistency on the music. We go from "kinda good" to "wtf am I listening to". Like the horrendous kicks in the first village music where it sounds like someone is using a jack hammer. Like you said, gameplay seems to be intact, which is great, but I'll definitely be playing with the original BGM as I'm too scared to cringe every time I'll go in a new zone. I hope voice overs can be disabled or at least changed to Japanese, but that's less of a "problem".

This was the regular PS4. No idea if there'd be a difference but I wouldn't expect too much. Well, supposedly it's Pro enhanced, but that could mean anything really. Probably higher res support at least, but whether that means proper, higher internal res or just upscaling the output, is anyone's guess.

I really like to give this game a chance, but I don't always agree with the choices made regarding the music remix. Would it be possible to substitute better remixes for the crappy ones on the PC version through some modding? Would be great.

Then they do't have to worry about lip lock or making extra animations like the Japanese version would've required since it has extra dialogue if one of the main three is mentioned by name and you used their canon name. In that, there's are two versions of each line, one that includes the name if you gave them their canon names, and one without in case you didn't. Kinda wish the English version did that...

The minimap is taken from the iOS version of the game. If Square Enix is going to do a full blown, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT inspired, 3D remake of Final Fantasy I and II, the minimap would be taken from the PSOne version. If they’re going to do a Dissidia Final Fantasy NT inspired 3D remake of Final Fantasy IV, the minimap would be taken from the Wonderswan Color version. For the Seiken Densetsu 3 remake, the minimap would be taken from the original version.

It's a hit stun. Just like the OG, if you hit after 100%, and knocked them down, they were down and stunned for a bit, same for the MC.

Back in old SNES the style of the OSTs was limited by the hardware but it was easy to listen as it only contained a few different instruments. This remixed danger(boss music) ost has so many strange noices in it. Also the field theme is very confusing and hard to listen for me. Graphics is nice but music is bit tedious with that many different sounds for me. My ears are just to slow to recognize the whole music i think :(

That was from using the inbuilt streaming on PS4. It runs smooth otherwise (can't speak for PC or Vita though). Apparently it still crashes on occasion even without streaming, but at least you don't normally lose anything when it happens because of the autosave.

Ugh the "some unseen force..." at 33:50 AKA the script was not filled in for that part. (Just plop some temporary rocks down, dudes. Or block the entrance with some spell you need to cast.) Otherwise I'm fairly impressed. The new music just has a different overall feel, but I think it's fine.

This revised Mana game looks like it could be worth diving into... At least once the price drops. I'm not paying $40 for this. The original version was good back in its day, but it's outdated now. The remake didn't do it much justice. Why is there no online play? Some of the broken mechanics from the old version were fixed, but the god-awful menu system should have been revised to something more modern. Digging into the menu shouldn't stop the action. A quick tool bar for spell casting, switching weapons, and using items on the go would have been nice. It's just stupid having to pause the action and dig into the menu to cast a spell or use an item. This was annoying back on the SNes and it hasn't changed. Can you imagine playing with a friend and the action pauses each time she opens up her menu? Why wasn't this changed into an active mode of play?

Looks too easy. He beat Tropicallo without taking any damage when in the original that usually resulted in a few pumpkin bombs to the face. Also, the recovery times for enemies getting hit is way too long. While you could stunlock enemies in the original, they would often break out of it before you could recharge back to 100%.

Hopefully we might be able to set up the difficulty level. When I was a child, it took me months to beat the Tiger. I had no idea of how were working the equipments and level exp improvement.

I think the tiger was was the last difficult boss. The creature in the dwarf kingdom was somewhat difficult too because I soloed it. Once I got the Sprite it was easy street on SNES past the tiger. You could spam magic so fast that you would decimate any boss. Cast, pause, casting the next spell before the first one even started, on and on. There was one boss I recall that was immune to magic. It wasn't hard, but it took more than 10 sec to kill:)

I suggest you to play the hack rom of the game which propose a difficult mode. I have loved it, I had some intense moments where I was just able to beat a boss by almost nothing. And the demo mana is impossible to kill without cheating.

Woaw.... it looks so weird, i really prefer the SNES version even if it is in 2D. Japaneese developpers should consider sticking to 2D graphics on this genre. (+ adding voice acting is a very bad idea) It's like Mario soundtracks, since the Gamecube i never liked it anymore (whereas Mario soundtracks used to be so cool when playing on 8/16 bits systems)

The instability seems to come from streaming, it's been fine otherwise. Since I'm using PS4's built-in streaming and not a capture card, it puts a bigger load on the hardware.

What terrible, horrendous, shit music remix after he falls off the waterfall. I know there were numerous music remixers in the remake. The guy responsible for that have to be ashamed, his work in this music is terrible. I am watching many videos so far, and many music were fine re-interpreted, some glorious. This is by far the worst music so far, and I can say one of the worst together with other game remakes too. Anyway, the most emotional songs, after he is expelled from the village have become very good. Congratulations to the remixers. =) I'm still watching the video. Thanks for uploading. Well, I just watched the whole video. What I can say is that I am pleased. Except for the music after you fall on the first waterfall and the one of the first village (which is pretty irritating) all the other music vary from competent to very good remixes. The remix of the cave after you take Undine is better than the original.

i totally agree with that. as an old fan who played the game when it got released back in 1994 in europe, the music after he falls down the waterfall is just horrific and it has barely anything to do with the original track. Also at the first village i made a weird face when the music started, even its not as terrible like the first one. but i have to say some of the new arranged tracks are gorgeous or similar to the old ones, and even gave me an tear of nostalgia. I will play the game for sure, but surely making use out of that classic/remake music feature here and there.

I wouldn't mind if this was a budget remake, but they are trying to gouge us for $40 bucks on this. The music doesn't provide the same emotion the original did (the pianos on the breakdown, the acoustics to set the mood for "into the thick of it"). The village theme is too smooth and lacks the poppy high pitch of the original. That's the music. The graphics aren't bad. I don't mind them. I mind no moving mouths. Even if it's just a simple movement--ADD THEM! We're in 2018. Even then, the graphics lack a lot of an HD polish that is more a matter of taste than something I have to say is awful. This just feels mailed in for the price they are asking for. When FInal Fantasy VI had the $15 remake come out, I wasn't a fan, but I encouraged people to download it as it was worth the price. This is $40 and it just doesn't justify the cost.

I'm really disappointed. You look at the FFIV remake, and they added to the game and made it better. They got a cheap voice cast. There are better bgm remakes on KZbin. There's no mouth movement on dialogue. There's no sprite movement for major scenes (like Elliott shoving Randi? How hard would that be too animate?) SquareEnix just wanted a cheap cash cow. I'm happy with the general sprite and overworld, but thats about it. They had an easy target market. The original market now has kids. It would be a great thing to pass from one generation to the next. I'm sorry. I'll watch a let's play, wait for the price to tank, and MAYBE buy it on clearance. But otherwise, I'm just gonna pull my SNES and Cartridge and share it that way with the new generation.
