My dad taught me two things about the "hidden scribe" tool. 1) you can use it to scribe lines onto a work piece. 2) it's usually the first thing to go missing from your toolkit. I have at least 3 combination squares, and zero scribers! :) Your videos are brilliant, demystifying tools is a great way to make people more comfortable with the tasks at hand and help them become more self-reliant. Keep up the great work.

You guys need to quit being children and respect the commentator. You need to quit being children respect my comment. Everyday is a new learning experience for everyone. The only thing I didn't know in that whole video was that you could find the center of a dowel that way with that particular tool. So if you girls don't like it, I do have an old timey 2 inch auger bit that you can shove some place and I will gladly lend it to you for free. Then again most of you probably don't know what a bit and brace is. That comes from judging by the way you all hide behind your little icons and avatars and don't show your face.

There is always a sheer moment of panic whenever I have to pull the ruler out and flip it. I own several squares now because I can never get them re-inserted once I remove them. Leah, you are the best! Incidentally, I ran into a combination tool for the first time today at Harbor Freight (HF).I am working on a project that requires 30 degree angle. Remembering my high school days, I thought of getting a geometric or mathematical set from HF.I was intrigued seeing a combination tool but not knowing how to use it.I knew it will save my problems. So I came to youtube to learn how to use it. The previous KZbinr talked about the scribe tool but for a different reason.He uses it to mark off the points of a straight line as you have on a measuring line.So that way he visualizes along the distance of a straight line on the board. However, I learnt more from you.You went into additional details on how to use the angle finder, how to find the center point of a sphere. Thank you very much.What a great teacher, you are!

They always bring old toolboxes filled with mostly junk. I just this morning started restoring an old combination square and never noticed the part at the back. I unscrewed it and pulled it out to find a sharp point. I googled what it was, and what it was used for and it brought me to your video. Thank you for making me a little bit smarter today. I have known about the scribe for decades. I found it in my youth, and asked what it was. You might also mention that the rulers come in different lengths. I just got an 18" one from Harbor Frt. Tools, as I had misplaced my other one that was shorter. It was really awesome because the length enabled me to make measurements I would have otherwise had difficulty in making with the short ruler.. Also I'd like to mention that on the ones that have a steel ruler, that periodically disassembling the ruler from the body and cleaning out the groove of rust & debris help make it slide easier. I also put a dab of silicone grease in the groove and wipe off all excess. A couple I have do have a small spring on the screw and a tiny bit of lube keeps the spring from rusting & breaking. (I live in Washington State, and you all know we never have any rain here, so the tools stay nice and dry all the time, right?) To get the "half moon" guide pin back into the ruler groove, I found loosening the knurled nut a lot will enable you to easily rotate the guide "half moon" to allow the ruler to easily slide back in. Great video, Leah. thanks.

I thought that scribe tool was common knowledge, I learned of it in my father’s shop.
@nothankyou55245 жыл бұрын
What exactly do you think the definition of common knowledge is? It would be something that most people learn. If a lot of people did not learn this, for whatever reason, then it isn't common. I always thought that understanding grammar and reading and comprehension and understanding are pretty much common knowledge, but I guess you have proved me wrong.

I thought everyone knew what a scribe was with the combo square they list it on the package so I didn’t think that was going to be the hidden tool

I just found one of these in an tool box and wondered if I could use it to get a 30* angel. I was told by my 'friend' a 'tool expert that I could only get a 45 and 90 using it. Well being one that loves tools now , many projects later, I am delighted to find your video. I am going to get the accessories tomorrow. I am excited that I get to share what I learned here today with my 'tool expert' friend. I love this.

It is also used for the ruler part if the ruler has 2 holes in it. 1 hole is for the scribe and the other is for your pencil to make circles. I had 1 that had holes on every inch line for making different size circles. It's a all in 1 tool. Great for an all in 1 handyman.

i used to laugh at woodworking (I had more "important" things to do). Now, I love woodworking -- even designing and building jigs is a lot of fun. (P.S. I am 60 years old; it's never too late to start.)
