@@mightyhearts1376 I shed tears during the Belmont as it was happening on TV back then. Somebody else also cried. It was Jack Nicholas, arguably world's best ever professional golfer. He later said that he had found himself in his living room alone, on his hands and knees in front of the TV, weeping as secretariat came around the bend and down the stretch 31 lengths ahead. Nichlaus was good friends with Haywood Hale Broun of CBS News, who covered sports and horse racing. And Nicholas said to Broun, "Brownie, what happened to me?" Broun said, "Jack, for your entire career you have striven for perfection, and in that moment, you saw it."

You're absolutely correct, Secretariat was sick both times he lost. Ms. Tweedy found out that Secretariat had a really bad stomach flu and she had a fit when she found out Secretariat was sick she said "don't you ever race my horse again when he's sick because he goes to the back of the stall and sulks" Ms. Tweedy went on to say he can't help it if he's sick. People noticed that he was sick on the race track when he lost because he couldn't kick into a higher gear to catch the other horse. Secretariat did not like to lose.

Aw, bless the heart of the great jockey, Ron Turcotte. Mr. Turcotte is the last surviving (major player) in Secretariat's, now legendry, story. Sadly, Ron Turcotte suffered a life changing race injury (1978) which left him paralyzed from the waist down - at the very same track (Belmont) where he won that marvelous race with Secretariat in 1973. He has lived a full life ever since - to his tremendous credit. Cheers to you, good sir!

I often check for new Secretariat content online, and of course this 50th anniv. year has brought a bonanza!! This video ranks at the top of my Favorites list. You included talks with some folks who I’ve never heard share their/their involved family member’s Secretariat reminiscences. Making for an unusually wide-range retrospective. To my mind, the only thing that could make this video any more valuable would be a chat with Chic Anderson’s family, re: how he felt about his TV call of Big Red’s Belmont Stakes & its place in history. How it affected his career and the rest of his (much too short) life. Thank you again for this time-capsule treasure. I wish you much joy & good health in the days ahead. There's a good part of this video that is total crap in my opinion. Secretariat was the greatest racehorse of all time but you wouldn't know it listening to this video. It makes a big deal of Secretariat's losses (when he was sick, hemmed into the rail, or taken out at the gate). Case in point, Secretariat beat Onion by 10 lengths in the Marlboro Cup after losing to him in the Whitney. None of these other horses and jockeys hold 3 Triple Crown records that still stand to this day. I feel bad for Sham but Secretariat literally ran him to death in the Belmont.
@janeblattner216 Жыл бұрын
Thank YOU! For making this point!!! That being said......those losses sound like dirty jockey work still at play???? I am only a super Secretariat fan and not at all a race horse person. Do horses win in these races or jockeys? I get when he was sick (who wants to run when they are sick?) Taken out at the gate during an early race when he was young, I get that too.But the commentary that he was hemmed into the rail? I ask again, who runs the race the horse or the Jockey? This commentary about Secretariat being hemmed in at the rail confused me even when we are talking about SECRETARIAT THE GOAT!!! Are these races about strategy on the jockey's part or about the strength of the horses????

Does anyone besides me find it amazing that turcotte didn’t take out the whip at pimlico or Belmont? I just watched the Belmont a few days and the winning time was 2:29 and change and they were beating these horses down the stretch. When I think secretariat would’ve won this years Belmont by over 5 seconds and never had a whip on him, it just amazes me that he ran so hard so long with no real push. What would he win by this year 27 lengths or so? I mean it would’ve been a joke. It’s really incredible all these years later with advances in training nutrition etc, they can’t touch him.
@laurenurban3942 Жыл бұрын
Yup. Ronnie had his whip put away in the Preakness and the Belmont. He won those two races on his own. The derby was a bit different. Ronnie took him back and moved over to the rail to save ground. Ronnie had to guide him through that big field in the derby, then tapped him twice at the top of the stretch….to let him know that it was time to go. The rest was all Secretariat.

Lucien's motto was "Don't tell no one nothing!" Penney regretted running Secretariat against Prove Out because he had a bad ankle that day. The owners and trainers fault. Just don't run him until he was ready to run. He'd been unbeaten. Like in the Wood Secretariat had an abscess the size of a half dollar. Lucien should have told Turcotte. Turcotte said he wouldn't have pulled up on the reins and could not understand why he kept jerking his head up. No, Lucient wasn't the BEST because he should have insisted that Secretariat NOT run when he was sick. Ruined Secretariat's record forever!
