He was the greatest ever for more than one reason, his musculature and bone structure just two pieces of the puzzle. But I think those two aspects of who and what he was were just as intrinsic to his makeup as was his 22 pound heart. And all that doesn't even touch upon his gentle soul and the look of eagles in his eyes.

I was 12 in 73. I recall my father saying something in passing about a horse race. He said “ man, this horse is something else, you might want to watch this race today”. But, I was just a dumb kid and didn’t understand the significance. One of my many regrets not watching. I had the chance. All these years later I realize he was talking about Secretariat in the Belmont.

Secretariat was literally the best racehorse. Not because of his physical fitness, but because he loved running. You can see it. He did it in his spare time and there's pure joy in his stride when you watch the videos of him racing. His trainers and jockeys rarely ever whipped him. He just wanted to run - and he got it. Because really, if Secretariat didn't want to run... I don't think he would, hehehe.
@Whoopdido7774 жыл бұрын
I’d have to look to find the video again, but I swear Eddie Turcotte once said in a talk or an interview that he purposefully held back Secretariat at the beginning of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. I’m not sure why he would do that, but I think he was last, or close to last at the start of each race and then he started to change gears at some point. There’s a point in the Preakness where his acceleration looks like a Tesla Model S and he just starts zooming past the other horses. Eddie said that he decided that, for the Belmont, he wasn’t going to hold him back. He was just going to let him go. He immediately went out to the front and obviously stayed there and we’ve all heard that Eddie never went to the whip. The horse just wanted to run fast. It makes me wonder if Eddie hadn’t held him back at the Derby and the Preakness, if he wouldn’t have won those races by 30 lengths too.
@marysueeasteregg3 жыл бұрын
@@Whoopdido777 You've got names mixed up. Secretariat's jockey was *Ron* Turcotte. His groom was Eddie Sweat. Though I can't be certain, I strongly suspect you're also mistaken about Turcotte holding him back in either race. Secretariat had plenty of tactical speed, and there wouldn't be much point in deliberately placing him last, where he could run into traffic problems -- he won races stalking and on the front end, as well as coming from behind. Turcotte usually let him him his own race, I think, at least as a 3-year-old. Secretariat was often slow out of the gate, quite possibly because in his maiden race he was slammed between horses and knocked almost to his knees. Chenery thought it made him (understandably) wary. Turcotte did say Secretariat could have won the Preakness by 16 lengths.
@Whoopdido7773 жыл бұрын
@@marysueeasteregg You’re exactly right about the names. Big mistake on my part. You’re right about his maiden race too. I wish I could find the video but I swear I saw Ron, Penny or both say that they deliberately held him back a little bit in maybe in the Kentucky Derby in order to rest him for the next two races. Or maybe it was the Preakness and that’s why Ron said he could have won by 16 lengths. Ron held him back a bit in order to rest him for the longer Belmont.
@marysueeasteregg3 жыл бұрын
@@Whoopdido777 Yes, not extending him in the first 2 races would have made sense, with the others coming up. (Might have been 14 lengths rather than 16...Turcotte definitely said one or the other about the Preakness.)
@Whoopdido7773 жыл бұрын
@@marysueeasteregg I know that Pincay (Sham’s jockey) said that he couldn’t believe how easily Secretariat passed him at the end of the Kentucky Derby. Turcotte never used his whip and Pincay was was whipping the hell out of Sham the whole time and Pincay looked over and was shocked at how easily Secretariat blew by him. He could have won the Kentucky Derby by more too had he been pushed I think.

I wonder how many little colts and fillies he sired, what a magnificent specimen of a horse he was, he had it all -- superior anatomy, strength, stride, huge heart and a champion soul, never to be forgotten! RIP, SECRETARIAT -- March 30, 1970 to October 4, 1989.

He sired more than 650 registered foals. He has a daughter Trusted Company born on February 14, 1989 and a son Maritime Traveler, who was born in 1990 from the last crop. Both are still alive but probably won't be around much longer. They are the last two surviving children of Secretariat after Border Run died at the age of 34 last month.
@mjleger4555 Жыл бұрын
@@mikemadunic7960 Thanks for that info, Mike. There is only one word for Big Red, that is, MIGHTY! I was watching on TV in 1973 when he won the Triple Crown and I whooped and cried, I was beyond thrilled! First TC since 1948! I was all alone that Saturday, but I had been following the impressive Secretariat since the Derby so had cancelled everything to be by the TV. I had been seriously unreachable on Saturdays when the Triple Crown races were on for about ten years. I didn't like bourbon but always had my one bourbon- lemonade over crushed ice with mint from my garden, when I watched the Derby and I'd pour myself a drink well before the Post Parade and watch the horses make their way to the starting gate and watch my pick run. The year Secretariat won, I had picked him to win so was just ecstatic that day, I'll never forget it as long as I live and I've been to many horse races before and since, but none quite like that one. I watched Big Red win by 31 lengths and absolutely quieted for a few seconds after he won, then came the tears! I was probably as thrilled as if I had been there that day. Secretariat: (March 30, 1970 - October 4, 1989), was age 19,1/2 when he died so he had a lot of years to sire foals. I pull up that race on the computer every race season and watch it and am thrilled all over again. He was a magnificent, three-year-old at the Derby and stayed a memorable example of pure CHAMPION to his last days. RIP, RED! The world didn't see a Triple Crown winner until for 25 years until Secretariat captured the honor in 1973. Then came consecutive Triple Crown victories by Seattle Slew in 1977 and Affirmed in 1978 excited racing fans, but another long 37-year dry spell until American Pharoah won the Triple Crown in 2015. The wait for the next winner was short, as Justify accomplished the feat three years later. I think I saw them all win their Triple Crown but none thrilled me as much as Secretariat. Seattle Slew was a West Coast horse so I had picked him. Affirmed was a Florida horse. I didn't pick Justify, a Kentucky horse, because he had failed a drug test weeks before the 2018 Kentucky Derby and probably should have been disqualified for the Derby but the case was dropped and he ran and won. Later, somehow the Egyptian owner of Pharoah didn't thrill me much because I had picked Dortmund in 2015. Still exciting though. We'll see what happens this year. Six-time Derby winner, Bob Baffert has a few of the top early choices. So does Louisville native Brad Cox, who has never had a Derby starter but hopes to bring the 2-year-old champion, Essential Quality, along with a few others, to his hometown track. I'm not certain whether I condone foreigners racing their horses at our Big Three horse races, Japan has entries for 2023 and so does Saudi and Dubai, and maybe other countries also. I'm watching the gray horse - EQ, Practical Move, Forte and Cave Rock right now, but in 3 days, it's February 2023, so some surprising changes could show up before 5-6-23!

Thank you for posting this wonderful video of Secretariat. He truly was one in a million and we were lucky to have witnessed God's perfection in this magnificent animal. He set track records that still stand today. He captured the hearts of millions and will live on forever in our hearts. He was a beautiful horse as well as a great athlete. We may never see another one like him again.

Ahhh but there was one other as good as him, and SHE was also a tripple crown winner, ( 1975 Fillie Tripple Crown) in my view Secretariat was the 2nd best horse of all times, as he lost 2 races in his career while Ruffian (his niece) lost 0 races out of the 10 races she ran, no other horse ever came close. Her Sire was Reviewer who was brother to Secretariat, Both were Sired by Bold Ruler. Just a shame she broke her leg in her final race, a match race against 1975 Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure, and had she not broke down, she'd of won that race to as she was already ahead by a length and a half at the time her leg snapped.

I agree with you. People talk about races when horses lost 0 races. They don't understand the stamina and the strength and endurance he had. The way he dictated his own races to win and the fact all of his races the records have not been broken as we speak as of yet. Yes he lost a few races the the performance he did, it's jockeys today that says that horses today can't run the way and the time he ran and They see that's it's unheard of today of horses. His performance made him the best athlete of the 20th century. The horses today cannot do what this horse did. Every race re ran during the triple crown, he ran them faster and ran them in record time. Like I said performance and strategy made him as he is today. Definitely my favorite horse. Almost 40 years has past and no horse has done what he did. He had to be excellent they made a movie about him. I love you BIG RED.❤

No, he wasn't one in a million or we would have seen others like him. He was one of a kind. Perfection. Never to be repeated. There will never be another like him. His heart was 22 pounds! The average thoroughbred horses heart was 8.5 pounds. He was in a class all his own . Like Elvis. Never ever another . We were blessed to be alive to see him and know of him. How I wish I'd met him. I'll see you on the other side, gorgeous Red.

@@simtasticgrl271 I don't know anything about horses or racing but I did watch a video about Secretariat and they mentioned that many of the races that he lost were lost due to physical issues. I know he was hit very hard coming out of the gate in his first race and many conjectured that that was why he held back at the starts, preferring to let the crowd even out and then make his move. I know he had other physical issues such as a sore in his mouth. I just love watching him run. I wish that I had paid more attention when he was alive and had the opportunity to see him. I can't say he has changed my interest in horses or racing but this one horse was special. I am sure that Ruffian was a fine horse also and we are each entitled to our opinion about who was the best.

I love just watching him love to run! He is perfectly built....running like a tremendous machine. He loved the spotlight and yet seemed to love being retired. There is a favorite part in the move Secretariat.. if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. He’s coming around the corner in the Belmont… All of a sudden everything stops and you hear the words as you watch him round the corner..in his greatness showing the world what he will do...”he laughs at fear and is afraid of nothing, he does not shy away from the sword and he can’t stand still with the trumpets sound” So spot on!. The greatest horse to ever live!!💕

I still get chills watching this magnificent horse. No horses in 47 years, have even close to beat his speed and endurance. When Secretariat died, there was an autopsy that showed that his heart was two and a half larger than it was supposed to be. Trust me on this. My best friends lived at Claiborne when Secretariat retired.

That was a gene mutation from the mare Pocahontas for a fully functioning very large heart(22lbs) not diseased at all. Sham had this too his heart was 18 lbs. the gene is only passed through the mares.

@@alpinoalpini3849 more of a figure of speech - if there is a God then a horse like Secretariat should make us believers.I don't think that religious people had anything to do with his demise. It was a decision based on vets (science) and owners. i wish that he could have lived out his years too.
