Man O' War and Citation were both in the same league as Secretariat. Those three are the cream on top. (Man O' War ran with steel shoes and often extra weight to handicap. And his only loss impacted by rider.) Cheers to the memory of all three!

In my 70's, and there have been 3 athletic achievements that stand above them all imho: The Miracle on Ice in 1980, Jack Nicklaus' 1986 Masters win, and Secretariat at the Belmont. It was a privilege to see Secretariat in 1973. Every year at Derby time I play all 3 races on YT just to re-experience it.

I was an athlete but horse racing wasn't a thing in Boston back in my day, but when I was 12 secretariat splashed on the news, I remember watching a race when the commentator calling the race said, "he's moving like a tremendous machine", it still gives me goosebumps, horses are such noble animals and secretariat impacted me in a special way.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was blessed I was at the Belmont 50 years ago and now I can’t wait for Saturday for the Kentucky Derby. Just seeing secretariat is watching Beauty in motion and I got goosebumps. He has always been the greatest horse ever to me. He was perfect.

What a glorious memory! I was 10, at the time. Brings tears to my eyes. I ache for those times...the 70's thru 90's. I can't believe how much the world has changed, and mostly for the worse. 😣😭

Immediately after the Belmont Stakes -- Pete Axthelm mentioned to another sports reporter that he believed he had been at the greatest sports event ever when Ali fought Frazier.....that is, until watching Secretariat.

If Turcotte had let him, he would have kept on running until he decided to stop, I think the freedom of it would have given him satisfaction. I would have loved to see him keep on going!

Greatest horse of all time?!!! Give me a break!! You must know NoTHING about horse racing or other horses.!!!! Speed records are not that important to an owner or trainer. Winning races is!!!!! Sec's win percentage was 75% pretty poor for the greatest horse of all time!!! Man of War was 11 for 11 at 3, Native Dancer was 21 for 22 at 3, and Citatiion was 19 for 20 at 3 with a loss at at a 6 furlong spring. Chinook Pass was inredibly fast. Easy Goer broke Sec's record at the Gotham Mile, and won more races than he did. Lesington, Boston, the 18 hundreds, read up on some really great horses!!!!!!

Understood, but none of what you said means that he could have beaten Secretariat in 1973, especially at Belmont. Speed does matter but as you mentioned, it is not the only factor yet it is THE ONLY metric that you can even begin to compare any athletic feat across generations. Plus, according to your logic, Floyd Mayweather is the best of all times simply because of winning percentage? LOL far from it. If Secretariat's Triple Crown race records times are unbroken in another 50 years from now, NOBODY will agree with you.

@@lazyrider6918 Probably 2:24 will not be broken ON DIRT!! It has been broken by serveral other horses on turf/grass. Don't tell me grass is faster than dirt. Not true. The truth is 12 furlong races are not run anymore, like the 2 mile races. Now most races are 10 furlongs, top. In 1912, a mare named Sotemia ran 4 miles in 7:14 and change, a world record that still stands, as 4 mile races are not run here anymore. They are in England. Look I'm not going to argue. Sec was one of the greatest horses in the 20th century. We had so many great ones, like Kelso, who was Horse of the Year five years in a row!!! Sec was beaten 3 times at 3,m but Prove Out and Onion.
