Likewise, when you put Aaron Rodgers into the prism, you see a variety of perceptions-- he's a future first ballot hall-of-famer, a Cinderella story, a long-haired Covid liar… but whatever you think of him now, Rodgers became the undeniable center of the Packers universe.
But! There was a time when the opposite was true. When the Packers belonged to Brett Favre,
and Aaron Rodgers was the most hated man in Wisconsin.

To this day, I am so glad the front office got tired of Favre's retirement antics and didn't let him come back when he unretired. He held the team hostage toward the end of his career in Green Bay and his consistency fell off. Just look at how their playoff runs went in his final years. Of course, it looks right in hindsight from Rodgers' performance, but at the time, it was a gutsy move.

Ted took a lot of abuse, but the fans that did that were nowhere to be found when Ted was proven right in winning a Super Bowl. Those fans ended up in Minnesota wearing Vikings jerseys proving once and for all that they were NEVER Packers fans, but Favre fans. Those fans got their karma watching the Packers win while Favre ended up a cripple after costing the Vikings a trip to the Super Bowl with another of his classic boneheaded throws.

Rogers has really been no better. Stats and playoff games aside, Rogers has been chocking almost every season. As far as Favre, I got tired of his "waffling" every season but in his defense, when you ask at the end of the season after getting beaten up all season, it's a lot easier to say you are leaving then but a few months latter, after the body heals, he wanted to get out and play again.

Times have changed. First round QB's were expected to sit for couple seasons. Modern QB are mutch more prepared for NFL games and there is more expected from them earlier.

@@Rahkesh357 Are they though? Look at the last two top draft picks that are supposed to be "once in a generation talents" with Tua and Trevor Lawrence. They got tossed into the fire and are seriously struggling, with Miami allegedly (and almost certainly according to the NFL's investigation) wanting to drop Tua and get Brady. Mahomes even sat a year behind Alex Smith and played a single game, the last game of the season, his rookie year. Almost every single high draft QB in the last couple years that was immediately given the starter, with the surprise exception of Mac Jones, has struggled. Davis Mills, 2-9. Trevor Lawrence, 3-14. Justin Fields, 2-8. Zach Wilson, 3-10. Mac Jones turned it around but started and ended poorly to go 10-7 (his middle 7 was great, admittedly). Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow both had pretty bad rookie seasons though turned it around in their sophomore season, with 6-9 and 2-7-1, respectively. Kyler Murray even had a bad rookie season with 5-10-1 and has had average seasons since, mostly from late season collapses of the entire team. Daniel Jones went 3-9 and hasn't been able to adapt. Sam Darnold, 4-9. Jared Goff started his first season 0-7 when Case Keenum was taken out of the starting spot. I could go on and on about how wrong your statement is. In fact, of all the recent first round QB's, only Tua had a decent rookie season, at 6-3, and fans (and seemingly the team) are giving him one last chance with the Dolphins as a boom or bust moment.

The one thing you didn't mention was that, in addition to his play, the other big thing that helped Rodgers win over the fans was the fact that Favre went to the Vikings, which Packers fans saw as a betrayal, and caused them to rally around Favre's replacement.

I do not agree with the notion that a professional athlete must also become a shill for the powers that be and their schemes. Aaron Rodgers is a liar in he didn't answer a question truthfully. Try not to forget it was a question to begin with which means he did not just represent something falsely. Someone asked him a question and requested personal information from him. As a hockey fan first, it reminds me a lot of the Canadiens being gifted a 5th overall pick in 2005 and drafting Carey Price. It confused and angered many for Montreal to get a goalie, which is about as important a position as a QB, when the team had Theodore and a deep prospect chart that included Christobal Huet. Hockey "analyst" Pierre McGuire was especially scathing at the team's decision. There were especially tensions in 2010 when Jaroslav Halak took over the starting job in the playoffs and rode the Habs to a Conference Finals, upsetting both the regular season champions and the reigning Cup champions thanks to his heroics. That Summer, Montreal would trade Halak, saying that Price was still the goalie of the future. I remember a really lousy preseason game few months later where Price was getting booed and was dragged even more in the media after he said that it wasn't a big deal to have a bad performance in a preseason game. Carey Price ended up being am elite goaltender, making the Canadiens do wonders even without much of a good team ahead of him. Though his career was sadly marred with injuries, he is still the only goaltender in the last twenty years to win MVP in 2015, and dragged the Canadiens to an extremely unlikely Stanley Cup Finals in 2021 almost by himself. Even superstar Sidney Crosby once called him the best goalie in the world. Carey Price has been the face of the franchise for a long, long time, and is a lock for a first ballot Hall of Famer. But damn, didn't it look like it when he was first drafted...

I remember ther Price - Halak talk and how TSN was shocked that the Habs decided to stay with Price and let Halak go. Even I was surprised at that move. Price turned out to be a monster, while Halak lost a step as time passed. Coaches and front offices know their team's inner working better than the people from the outside looking in.

The difference though being that Price wasn’t replacing a legend. Halak was a good goaltender, but he was no Brett Favre. This is more like if a team chose a young goalie over Patrick Roy or Martin Brodeur. Maybe Marc-Andre Fleury is a better comp? He had two situations that don’t exactly line up, but when looked at together as if they were one, it shares a lot of similarities to the Favre/Rodgers saga. In Pittsburgh he was exposed in the expansion draft to make way for up-and-comer Matt Murray and in Vegas he was a fan favorite who was traded to give Robin Lehner (who’s been disliked by a lot of that fanbase for reasons I’ve never understood) free reign over the starting job.

I would say the difference is that Rodgers was projected by many to go number one overall, but then he fell to 24th. While Love was projected to get drafted in the second round, but then the Packers traded UP to get him in the first round.

I've been a Packer fan my entire life. There was nothing quite like 2008. Brett Favre came out of retirement and the Packers said they wouldn't make him the starter (Because Rodgers already was) so he requested a trade. Most people wanted Brett Favre back. I was one of the few that didn't. Favre was like 37 years old at the time and I knew he had only a few more seasons left in him. I didn't think they should tell Rodgers off just because Favre couldn't make a decision about his retirement and wanted to come back. He had waited 3 years behind Favre at that point and I wanted to see what the guy could do. In retrospect, Rodgers is actually a better player than Favre by most measurements. I didn't know what to think of Rodgers around that time and I did have some doubts but the guy earned his chance to play and has made the most of it.

I think viewing the Jordan Love pick from Aaron Rodgers' perspective is so poignant right now. Jordan Love might not be the future of the Packers, I'd even venture it say it probabilistically impossible for Love to replace Rodgers. But that doesn't mean you can't uplift him and give him the best possible chance to succeed. I would wish on nobody the adversity that Rodgers had to go through coming into the League.

I feel like Aaron Rodgers has been so good for so long people have forgotten how good Brett Favre was. Favre won 3 straight MVPs in 90s and retired as all time leader in almost every passing category. He was probably the most beloved player by his fan base and the national media when he first called it quits. I've felt that if there had been a couple year gap for the Packers between Favre and Rodgers where the team just totally sucked then Favre would be remembered more fondly. Unrelated but I've also thought that if Steve Young had the exact same career on a team other than the 49ers he would be considered much higher on the greatest QBs list. Young had multiple MVPs and some of the best stats for that era. Plus he was a dual threat.

Favre isn't remembered as fondly because of how he acted on his way out the door. his waffling, his "Family Night" stunt, his interview on Fox News where his entitlement showed, his behind the scenes attempts to manipulate his way to Minnesota, blatant tampering by his agent. and trying to force his way back on the team. Favre did that himself with his selfish and egotistical behavior.

I remember having the exact opposite reaction to the Rodgers pick. Favre was just as reckless as he'd always been, but no longer had the athleticism and skill needed to pull off those miracles he's famous for. We were coming off a year where he threw four picks in the Wild Card round and we got beat at home by our divisional rival Vikings. He also had started that trend he had of annoyingly mulling retirement every season, hampering the team's ability to plan for his presence or absence. I had thought we needed to move on for a couple years at that point, actually. But I'm a Packers fan who doesn't live in Wisconsin; the experience there was likely different.

Here's a weird thing. I was the biggest Don Majikowski fan you'd find in my school. Brett Favre replaced MY favorite QB and a tiny part of me never forgave him, even despite a Super Bowl ring. That tiny part of me celebrated the day Rodgers was drafted. I'm sure there are still a few die hard Favre fans that have a little place in their heart waiting for the Jordan Love era to begin.

The best thing to ever happen to Rodgers was Favre going to Minnesota. In 2008, I and many other Packers fans were diehard Brett Believers and rooted for him big time in New York. When he went to the Vikings, all of those haters did a 180 and put their faith in Rodgers. Aaron played damn well in 2009 and he won the Super Bowl the next year to begin his journey as the now undisputed most accomplished player in the history of the Green Bay Packers.

Don't get it twisted. Just because QBs throw 50 passes a game nowadays and pad their career numbers, they're not better because of it. Bart Starr is the greatest packer of all time and it isn't even close. A real packers fan would know that.

Aside from Favre ending up in Minnesota and leading teams to winning, was that Rodgers’ greatest strength is Favre’s biggest weakness: interceptions. Game after game, season after season, Favre would rip out your soul with a backbreaking interception. Barring other team issues, imagine how many Super Bowls Green Bay would have if Favre wasn’t the all time leader of throwing picks. So when presented with a QB with just as much arm talent, but astronomically better accuracy, you don’t pass that up. Let’s hope Love has been studying well underneath Rodgers.

I remember in 2005, scratching my head thinking "What was Ted thinking?" I happily eat crow now as a Packers fan. Despite his recent eccentric behavior (then again the "Hippie Rodgers" seems more dangerous than the "God of Vengeance Rodgers" of the past), I know that most teams would still give anything for him. I enjoy that he's our QB given how amazing he performs and that we somehow caught lightning in a bottle by having two back-to-back first-round Hall of Fame QBs be primary starters in a row.

You just weren't paying attention. He was a stud in college. He beat the eventual co national champion Trojans (you're welcome LSU) in 2003. Then in 2004 again against the eventual national champion Trojans played the single best game I've ever seen a QB at any level play. He threw 26 completions in a row. I was at the game but rewatched it a few years ago. It's no exaggeration to say that every single pass was on target. They lost but he basically played a perfect game. No one in Berkeley was the least bit surprised he turned into the NFL player he became. I was practically weeping when the Raiders passed on him.

This is one of the reasons why I love Rodgers. He went through so much adversity in the beginning of his career and was still able to put together a HOF career. But like the rest of us, he's only human. He makes mistakes like anyone else, his are much more monitored since he's the face of the most historic NFL franchise

Rodgers did not lie about being vaccinated against covid. He said that he was "immunized" which is the truth. He didn't specifically say what he was immunized against and frankly, no one asked. Everyone just moved on without saying "Hey, thats a little vague, could you clarify for us what you are immunized against?" Thats not Rodgers fault, thats the fault of every reporter who failed to ask the question. It was a slick answer that got him around having to directly state that he didn't receive a big pharma covid vaccine. He outsmarted everyone with that answer and thats why everyone is mad. Growing up a diehard Packer fan, Favre was my hero. However, I was not upset when they drafted Rodgers. I knew Favre’s time was coming but I was hoping he could hang on. Even back then I never understood how the Packers fans could hate a guy so much that we had never even seen play. I always wanted Favre as our QB, but every player has their time. I was lucky enough to see Rodgers his rookie year against the Steelers in preseason with my dad. I was so happy to finally see my hero Favre play even four downs that game, but the the thing that really stuck with me and my dad was how well Rodgers played that day. Both of us left saying to each other that Rodgers looked like he could become a star. I knew after that day the Packers were in good hands after Favre.
