I never begun to learn it because it was too impressive and difficult for me, but a girl that I like at school talked about how much she liked it, so I put myself to work, and realized that indeed : it was difficult. 5:43 She warned you..I actually attempted this after not playing piano for 10 years, and it required a worldwide pandemic putting me into lockdown and isolation to really master this piece. Otherwise I would’ve given up due to the frustration. I thought it would be a great piece to avoid learning boring exercises and still obtain good technique…I ended up learning a bunch of boring exercises over months in order to get over various difficulties. More than the injury-risk, I think the discouragement one feels from playing this as a beginner is an even bigger reason to avoid it in the beginning. I’m a rare survivor… But fortunately I’m able to learn other etudes more quickly now. Looking forward to more videos in this etudes series!

@@jbad6066 The torrent etude is on my channel. Before, I was able to play Mozart’s c-major sonata k545 as a kid. And learned a couple of Chopin’s easier nocturnes and waltzes. For the 10 years I only knew how to play Chopin Op. 64 No. 2. So I’d say I was an intermediate.

@@Chopin-Etudes-Cosplay it seems that u got a point.. Trying a difficult piece in early stages of learning the piano discourages u... I tried moonlight in very early stages and i thought that it was for hands that are from outer space... As i gradualy worked on arpegios cords and octaves, I gave the piece another chance a week ago and it seemed doable, not playing it as a professional but with hard work it can be heardable. The thing is how can u judge that you are at a good stage, let s say intermediate , so to start working on such a masterpiece? Of course a serious teacher would answer but for me it s not affordable to have one.. Just by trying it and see if u got a chance? Are there any basic exercises that you have to past through so if u master them then u can give Torrent a try? By the way as i get into the piano learning, i find out that there are a lot of pieces that shine like Torrent (Yes torrent is my goal, if i can play it then i can die), similar excersises that have great result on hands and ears... Easier to learn and easier to master... Talking about Czerny's ones, with pedal after serious work they bring me to heaven... Any others that i should know? Or any thoughts in general?

Yes it's hard for me to say when you're ready for this piece, but it's a good sign that you are enjoying other pieces, because I think the safest way is to play other pieces that are gradually more difficult. Some tips: look up Josh Wright on KZbin, as he has a lot of great tips and at least one other pianist on KZbin started from beginner level and religiously followed Josh Wright's tips and can now play Torrent etude (look up TheGreenPianist). Try learning other Chopin etudes first, like maybe Op. 25 No. 1, No. 2 or other easier ones. And also, get the Cortot edition of Chopin etudes and follow closely his exercises. In addition, I learned scales and finger-independence exercises (Dohnanyi). Pace yourself, because the biggest challenge is to be consistent for a long long time without giving up. Good luck!

It's great that you exist! I think you have helped a lot of beginner pianists with wonderful tips and instructions. I myself retired from my job a couple of years ago. I have taught myself to play the piano. I'm pretty good, but I need to learn a lot. I watched your video Debussy's "Clair de Lune" and noticed that the parts that were also really difficult for me, you also had to practice a lot. It felt ridiculously good. Been working on this for two years, on and off (practicing 10-15 mins on a focused part whenever I get the chance as a busy parent). A year ago got to the point where I memorised it, but then got so frustrated just by how much focus it required separating the hands. Learning the notes is not the issue with this piece, it’s just that there are so many technical changes through out, and like you said, getting the left hand on par with the right is very tricky. It’s literally an exchange of voices, and getting the dynamics right at the allocated speed is just 😩 will still always be my favourite Chopin Etude, though. It’s so gorgeously ferocious. Thank you for this helpful video on it. It renewed my drive to perfect it.

currently studying this :) i find it really helpful to think not at all notes, but to "drop" your hand on the first note of every quadruplet and think of the other 3 notes as a consequence of the first, like the concentric waves that form from a water drop in a pond. if you manage to stay relaxed and not articulate but let your fingers "fall" on the keys, the whole thing gets really more doable and enjoyable.

Hello! I have been watching your channel for sometime now and I have noticed that you take very kindly to Robert Schumann. I have news about him that you may find interesting. His still has family running around in the world somewhere, in fact I am a direct descendant of him. My mothers maiden name is Schumann and he is in our blood and we know it for sure! I got told by my high school music teacher I was a piano prodigy and I am self taught, I had finished learning Moonlight 3rd movement and Animenz Unravel. Decided to play this for my GCSE music, and got tendonitis from poor technique and fingering. I had to stop playing piano for 2 years because of it

Might the left-hand notes be easier to keep distinct and more staccato on a more period-correct piano? Chopin's old Pleyels seemed to be in that era that straddled the line between a much "plinkier" pianoforte and a modern overly-resonant piano.

I'm also learning all 12 Op. 10 Etudes to play for my upcoming University recital! I'm a bit behind you in terms of progress but one of my main issues so far is that I'm having some trouble with playing the first and second etudes consecutively. The muscles in my right forearm are always tired out after the first etude and they are definitely required in the second one due to the awkward and fast fingering. Do you have any tips for this?

Try to relax as much as possible. Also use the weight of your forearm and hand, don’t just play with your fingers. Keep your hand low and play into the keys instead of striking each note.

The reason why you are tensed is the unnatural stretching your fingers are forced to in those large arpeggios. Don't try to articulate your fingers, but position your wrist as in line as possible with each finger. And practise "stop and go": stop at the end of each figure within he arpeggio (on the 5th finger when going up, for example) and relax your hand on that stop, by bringing your fingers back into a closed positio very quickly. With time, make the stop shorter. Also, use a bit of rotation from the wrist and do the "flop" (Josh Wright has a new video on that and a few tutorials on arpeggios).

For this etude you need to bounce extreme lengths at leisure comfort, meaning your technique and virtuosity must be on par with Liszt and the late Sviatoslav Richter, otherwise it can't be done at all.

To me, the secret is to inverse the pulse, especially when the left goes up. In the harmonic marche, don’t mark your thumb but your 4th finger at the left hand. There are many tricks but those work for me

J'ai joué pour la première fois cette étude pour mon examen de médaille, c'était il y a huit ans. Je la jouais noire à 120, incapable d'aller plus vite, et je dois dire que depuis ça n'a pas beaucoup changé. J'ai eu l'occasion de bien me planter en la jouant à différents concerts, chaque fois en essayant de la jouer plus vite. C'est un peu mon oeuvre noire. C'est dommage, tant je l'adore. Favorite etude, still stuck on the middle part, much harder to learn by ear (I forgot how to read sheet music somehow, ) hand jumps are no problem, my hands can stretch an octave and a half, other than that PRACTICE is key

You should make a video on Op 25 n 4. I saw you mastered it, but never talked about how you memorized the jumps in the left hand. Actually I'd be more interested in the next etude Op 25 n5 first part (and last part) which is harder because those "wrong note" ornamented sixths and fifths are very uncomfortable and it's easy to get tense. I see that EVEN professionals do not hold the sixth and fifth that require a finger 2 and finger 5, even though Chopin wrote a dotted eigth note to be held. It does not sound difficult but IS very difficult, then the second part of that etude sounds very difficult but is NOT. The first part and last part are short enough to avoid getting tense when performing it. But when practicing, my hand asks for mercy after an hour.

The most daunting thing is that op 10 no 4 probably falls into the "very hard" category but not on the extremely hard like op 10 no 2, op 25 no 6 or op 25 no 11

While I understand that Chopin did not want to ascribe names to his pieces, the names, I feel are welcoming. What is more memorable: op. 28, no. 15 or 'Raindrop' prelude? As humans, I feel numbers alone do not create a relationship with something. We use names to relate to each other. Jean Valjean in Les Miserables was a number in prison. Numbers create a distance. Names create a bond. We bond to the Chopin pieces with names. And if he is unhappy in the hereafter about this practice, I say, that's life.
