phenomenal film - the acting is mesmerising, I love Mike Leighs unique style its coz its alive and real. I went to see Secrets and Lies at the pictures with my half brother the week that we met for the first time. Final scene and final line is a bullseye for sure. fascinating. im an american and i can’t help but wonder if this conversation took place in the states, it might be moderately dominated in discussions around the racial dynamics of the film. for example, i’d argue a major importance with the scene between Hortense & her friend is that it’s the only one in which she is interacting with another Black person, aside from the scenes with her around her family, which she does not have any shared dialogue. how does that change her behavior, mannerisms, sense of safety and comfort. the Black experience in the states and the UK are very very different, and yet i still think this element of the film really speaks to a lot of people. just a thought.
