I think he explained it vaguely in another video. US Forest service did him dirty, so he makes a bunch of videos sharing their tricks so any time someone googles “US Forest Service” he pops up everywhere. Something to that extent.

Just one thing about this that should be stated. Dryer lint only makes good tender if you don't own pets, the dog hair ruins the use of it. Also mostly only if you have cotton based clothes will it work correctly 👍 other than that everything was solid.

@@jasonriesbeck3165 mhm, precisely. That lint trick is very case specific, and it does need to be brought up and explained a lot more. Especially in a topic where it's supposed to be for being used in a survivalist role. Because it's not just the smell, the effectiveness is severely lessened as well. It is not something that you can rely on when your life is on the line.

Take old denim, cut it up into little squares and bake them for a while, then keep them in that kit; it lights very easy and creates long lasting embers

It's a very light oil made from pine wood resin. It's flammable, too. The name has been corrupted, though. Sometimes called turpAtine That's not the pine distillate real turpentine is.

I never thought of using anything besides dipping them in hot paraffin or beeswax before this tip, I just didn't think of the terps, everything else was just to toxic that I could think of.

Heck, any sporting good store sells great waterproof matches in a sealed container that are a thousand times better than those little kitchen matches even though they’re soaked in turpentine. I will also guarantee anyone that if they go into the woods with only ONE kind of fire starter they are apt to end up cold and wet!

I would go one step further and wrap the strikers in a little piece of paper towel to catch any loose red phosphorus that may fall off. You can also use this paper towel piece as tinder if needed. Great video! Coating them in candle wax also works although messy and requires you scrape it off before striking.

If you turn the bottle cap the other way ( non child resistant option) it will be MUCH more water proof. All respect

Wouldn't it be also useful to waterproof the strike faces? Like maybe stiffen the cardboard backing with wood glue (Titebond 3), or maybe contact cement them to a more rigid plastic backing?

As a kid we'd use Candle Wax or Nail Polish.

place a cotton ball at the bottom, and place half of your matches head down and the others head up you will get more matches in the bottle overall
