"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I don't agree with not aiding Ukraine. The reason why is this: If Ukraine falls to Russia, Russia will proceed to attacking/invading Poland, a member of NATO. If a country that's part of NATO gets attacked, the other members of NATO will be obligated to give their ally nation military assistance, which would lead to a bigger war. Then, since Russia would be under attack, Russia's allies will have the same obligation as NATO: Provide their ally military assistance. Then BOOM!! we've got World War 3 on our hands. All of what I outlined can be avoided by ensuring that Ukraine doesn't lose to Russia. Besides, surely the Military Industrial Complex would be thrilled to obtain profits by the US giving military aid[weapons] to Ukraine. By sending aid to Ukraine, Russia will keep getting stalled; once Russia is forced to retreat back into the boundaries of their country once they run out of either personnel or firepower, Ukraine will be indebted to the US for saving them from Russia, which would be beneficial(aka profitable) to the US(aka the oligarchs). I'm also tentatively in favor of sending a modest amount of military aid[weapons] to Taiwan. The reason being because it might scare China enough that they don't try to invade Taiwan. However, the vast majority of military aid is sent to Israel to support their genocide of Palestine. Cut off ALL aid to Israel immediately.

The money being sent to Ukraine is actually being spent in the USA to replace the old military equipment being sent to Ukraine. Also, Ukraine and Israel are not the same situations. Ukraine actually needs help and Israel does not. Also, it's a false dilemma to say it's one or the other: America can afford both to help Ukraine and their own people, they just choose not to help their own people because the voters elect people who aren't going to help them. We have a pretty predatory meal plan budget that basically runs out really quickly especially if you’re an athlete. Mama Cardi is literally the only reason why me, half the football team and basketball team was able to eat when our meal plan was low. I always say i wouldn’t have my bachelors if it wasn’t for mama Cardi so her family has always been down to earth she gets it

I read the hegemony of survival by Noam Chomsky and he basically outlined why we spend money abroad to maintain global order. Kyle's conflation of aid to Israel and aid to Ukraine is deeply concerning; the two countries occupy diametrically opposed stances in the respective conflicts. He needs to at minimum vocalize that he understands the distinction here, and why right wingers are actually saying cut off aid to Ukraine. And by the way, unlike in Palestine, success in Ukraine gets the US another, greatly powerful ally with Western values and actual expertise in maintaining European security - allowing the US to further let Europe be Europe from a foreign policy standpoint.

I voted in Oregon's primary today. I didn't vote for Biden, instead I wrote in "uncommitted." As a leftist, I'm normally registered as a non-affiliated voter, but I temporarily re-registered as a Dem this time specifically so I could flip this bird at Biden. I'm not voting for Trump, either. I'll hop back out of the party once the primary election is certified, and in Nov I'll either vote for Dr. Stein or Dr. West, or I'll write in uncommitted again depending on what's happening in 🍉. And I don't want to hear any voter shaming about not voting for Biden. Oregon is a deep blue state that Biden is already guaranteed to win in a landslide this November no matter how I vote. A Republican presidential candidate hasn't won Oregon since George H.W. Bush, so just hush.

The problem for me is I live in Arizona which is a key swing state so I have to decide whether or not to vote for Biden. Im getting my mail-in ballot soon. On the one hand, Biden is just horrible on foreign policy, and really crappy on domestic as well. but Trump will be way worse on both foreign and domestic and with Project 2025 being one of Trump's agendas I say the risks are too great not for Biden. That being said, if this is how the Democrats are going cooperate, I say just let Trump win and be prepared for America's downfall and hopefully pick up the pieces from a broken nation, because if the Democrats learn nothing from this, we are only delaying the inevitable at this point. This is my current mindset, and no I won't vote for Trump one bit but I probably won't be voting for Biden unless, by the time I get my mail-in ballot he changes his stance but I will vote selectively for which Democrat I will vote for and never republican. Never have voted a Republican, and never will, with the way they are acting right now and being anti-democratic. TLDR; our country's election system is broken and needs a massive overhaul starting with the removal of the Electoral College, and the implementation of rank-choice voting if we are ever going to get out of this situation where we have to constantly vote for the lesser of two evils.
