"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

sad what wealth accrual does to the mind, even with those who come across as relatively down to earth and relatable even so, it would be wise of leftists to treat him as an ally in order to coax him into better positions (on certain issues) due to his influence factor. IMO there are indicators to suggest he remains a decent person at his core.

@@jhm1069955 I don’t know if you watch this show a lot, but Kyle says that about a lot of people. It’s called self reflection. I WANT to say that republicans are 100% evil and do nothing good ever, because I see a lot of that coming from them. But I am able to self reflect on my bias and research against my intuition to prove my theory right OR WRONG. The scientific method works in your own philosophical arguments too. I am no fan of Joe Rogan particularly, or agree with Kyle, Krystal or Saagar 100% of the time, but I try to always step back to make sure I am being completely fair instead of giving into my biases and steering the narrative towards my own desires.

@@deepinmind83 I haven't kept up on Kyle lately and Im a fan of Rogan the podcaster. But even after taking more than a few steps back and really thinking about it with no bias its clear as day to me that many of Joe's acquaintances (i.e. Kyle) & friends like B. Schwab dare not to criticize him directly instead they find a way to defend him and often display some self-restraint from speaking out on issues they oppose , perhaps they do this to stay off Joe's shit list and get invited back or get a favorable acknowledgment from him. I do remember when David Pakman was last on, he seemed to call out Joe, questioning him on issues that Dave didn't agree with, and to me, Joe seemed 'butt-hurt' and maybe that's why Pakman hasn't been on the show again

@@jhm1069955 I can get behind that. I have seen joe react poorly to criticism and personal jokes on podcasts like Kill Tony and in interviews. I don’t KNOW that objectively, but I could see it being a possibility. I am simply pointing out that Kyle doesn’t just say that about Joe. He makes a practice of saying that all the time about other people who I don’t think he has a fear of losing credibility with. He is trying to be as consistent as possible, and it actually makes me give him quite a few more “respect points” in my mind. I don’t agree with Kyle on quite a few things, but I greatly respect that he concedes and gives caveats where due. I’m just saying that the idea that he DEFINITELY is saying “to be fair to joe” because he is afraid of him is weak correlation not definitive causation.

All it means is “I’m awake, not asleep, and aware of what’s going on around me”. That’s all it’s ever meant. The right turned it into a bad buzz word, like they do with any word/slogan they think the left can use to rally around, and he bought it. I've stopped watching Kyle regularly largely due to the lack of growth in his arguments, so I get you, I hope he decides to start paying attention to his viewers. Hire somebody to filter it for him, easy enough. While I think he's good as a "gateway" to progressive politics due to his incessant repetitiveness, this can be pointless to watch after a while. The two biggest cases within the last year or so that I’ve seen him do it with other people who just happen to disagree with him on stuff like Covid which is a more serious issue regarding left-leaning circles. Gupta and then that one other guy cool pushed back on him with myocarditis. I want to say the only time in the last 5 years that I’ve seen Rogan fully disagree with somebody who is on the right leaning side of things with Candace Owens and then to some extent Dave Rubin. That said, the amount of agency Staff (not permanent employees on pay roll) and pay roll employees who regularly call off, show up and complain the whole time then leave early. Or the most common one is showing up, seeing the patients they will have to care for and say if they aren't given different patients they are just going to go back home because of the stress. Fucking over the rest of the workers and the patients. Making everyone else more stressed consistently so that one person can have an easier day. I know these are specific examples and part of a much bigger problem. It is aggrevating how many people take advantage of "mental health" days for people who actually need it.

Every time I listen to American employment law I'm mindblown, in a bad way.

Still, I agree with you US employment law is mindblowing. Workers have no rights and their whole “at will” employment is total bullshit.

If you feel you can afford to miss a day's wage, then why shouldn't you be allowed to? If productivity goes up, while wages stagnate, then why shouldn't you take extra leisure time? Seriously, what do owners think their people are working for? If you want your workers there every day, then pay up! Make it worth their while. Give 'em a fair deal. Even rats understand fair play! If one rat always wins, then the other rat will quit engaging in play. This isn't hard to grasp.

Kyle is driving me nuts with this declining quality on commentary stuff. He should at least watch what he's commenting on. Commenting on a Rogan scandal and he hasn't even watched the podcast and is instead commenting on David commenting on Rogan and asking his audience to fill in blanks for him? An audience that he admits he doesn't interact with because he hates looking at social media stuff.. Whats the point. It just feels so fake these days. He stopped caring. I completely understand and respect not wanting to interact with social media online. But then don't ask your audience questions in your video.. And don't complain so much about not growing as a channel. How plugged out is he that he doesn't even know the general vibe of his subreddit. Kyle says a lot lately that he busts his ass making content and not showing much for it. But he also shows a clear lack of fundamental understanding on audience engagement. Get an editor or hell.. Even just a friend.. to look at your social media once a week or something if you're that allergic.

As a german us only having 20 days required by law honestly surprised me becuase I was quite sure we were at 22 or 24 but after a simple google search I realised why I was confused, 20 is indeed the absolute minimum but it's extremely rare for an employer to give you just 20 days. In my experience it's more common to have 24 as the company minimum instead. The US having 0 is just criminal in my opinion.

4 day work week: In construction or as an electrition working for a firm and many other jobs I've personally worked in... the following applied: 1. either I got burned out after a few months and my work ethic tumbled until hours of the day were wasted due to me being unable to work efficiently and stay motivated or 2. there geniunely wasn't that much to do at that specific day to justify me being at work for 8h wasting my life away, leading to further demotivation. These days I have much less money compared to back then but I'm far more productive for the company I work at since I go there, I do the things I have to do in 5-6h maybe three times a week , more at peak times, and I go home. I can pay my bills, I don't live above my needs and I have much MUCH more fucking time... so much so that sometimes I take a 2nd job for fun in order not to get bored. BUT THAT IS MY DECISION! And whenever I don't give a fuck about the second job anymore or I want a break or do whatever the fuck I want... I do it. This concept works withing a few key parameters. Do not live in an expensive city only for the sake of feeling closer to whatever it is you tell yourself you value; most of the time you don't participate in those things anyways. Get rid of debt, don't make new debt (only buy things you actually have the cash on hand for), consider cancelling all ongoing contracts that have no real benefit (Netflix & co. there is so much free content on the internet... you don't need to pay anyone but your provider.) Maybe even your cell phone contract and buy internet and flats on a need bases, walk to the store, cook yourself (fresh is mostly more cheap). And a few others. I still have almost a 1 to 1 income/ expense ratio but I have 10 times more free time to do MY thing. Can I still take off to holidays once a year? No... I'd have to plan a trip in advance and safe up for it... but again: I have holidays basically more than half the week... and I have EVERYTHING I need.

If the owner or CEO or anyone in management can just "take a day" (and be paid for it, regardless of the reason), then it stands to reason that all employees get to do the same thing. Inequality in the workplace starts with just this basic fact, among others. We've been conditioned by all of those at the top of the food chain that we don't deserve to "take a day" for whatever reason. That we're supposed to "work our way to the top to get those **perks**." Except they're not a Perk. They're a necessity. When the boss takes a day, there're people who back him up because the system is designed that way. When we the employee want to take a day, the system isn't designed to compensate and so we're demonized by a system that works against us. Ditch the "call Bob to take your spot" attitude, Kyle. It's the employer who needs to support the fill-in, not us. Support changing the system.

It is true "the owner or CEO or anyone in management can just "take a day"" but most actual workers can't just "take a day" and the reason behind that is that the work done by the owner/CEO/management is actually not essential. The CEO of an established corporation could take off for a month and nothing will really be impacted. If anything, day-to-day work might run smoother because senior executives don't have to attend 100 "brainstorming" sessions with the CEO

Yes, but do they? CEOs, for example are typically expected to be on call 24/7. As you move down the chain, the level of responsibility decreases, but I'm unaware of any competently-run organisation where people can just take days off if they feel like it. I do agree that an acceptable reason for management to take a day off should be an acceptable reason for anyone in the organisation to take a day off, but there still has to be a _reason._

Listen I'm an older millennial and even I catch myself scoffing at people who need a mental health day or those who struggle with anxiety and mental stress in general. That attitude comes from people who think they can always mentally will themselves out of a crisis, then they expect everyone else should be able to do the same. I've had to unlearn that bad thought process. Not everyone can just shake off terrible life altering news. Things aren't that simple. It would help if people slow some empathy for those who are struggling instead of shaming them . Besides we do need to rethink the meaning of work , also we need a good childcare system, better leave benefits and to cancel the 40 hour work week. Productivity has increased tenfold, but wages haven't kept pace. Boomers and Boomer mentality is toxic to what younger millennials and Gen Zers really need and we all shouldn't accepter Boomer contempt, it's played out old thinking and a quite annoying!!

Whether you like Joe Rogan or not, Kyle has a serious blindspot when it comes to him. He'll call out other people for similar things, yet he handles Joe with kid gloves. There are a lot of people, including CNN, that go way too far with their criticism, but Kyle's opinions are still skewed regarding Joe. It might be personal bias or he doesn't want to burn bridges for career reasons, but his entire brand is based on impartiality and maintaining his viewers' trust that he'll call it like it is. Without that, he'll just fade into the background with all the other KZbinrs spouting half-baked takes for ulterior motives.

Kyle simping for Jogan once again ... I'm shocked Kyle once again stating that he basically doesn't give a sh@t about the opinions of his fans ... Even more shocked I'm one of the growing group of people who has unsubscribed from his channel a while ago (always the same talking points, doesn't care what his fans think -> Doing nothing live, only shows up on a few channels with high subscriber numbers, always defending that wealthy knucklehead Jogan so he can keep his seat there appearing once every 2 years etc.etc.) And every time I tune in for one of his videos again, I always wonder why his subscriber numbers haven't gone down further already. Alas, similar to his semi-creation Justice Democrats, Kyle has turned out to be a massive disappointment. At least he hasn't started to grift like many others to boost his subscription numbers but if he doesn't change his attitude towards his fans, if he keeps making excuses for people with polar opposite opinions just because they have big KZbin channels it's just gonna get further downhill from here on out.

The capitalist argument is that some people are worth more money and deserve the improved life style. You are less valuable, and should spend some of your lesser amount of money on an alarm clock and car and gas so you can get to work. This is the Natural Order of things and all is well with the world. One does have to ask: If per capita production has become UNnatural with the advent of the assembly line, computers, electricity, etc, what is the argument for maintaining a Natural Order in the economy? There is none. Wall Street is all for gas subsidies and destroying crops to maintain market value. It's only when you start talking about social welfare, labor, and poverty that you need to start making arguments that some people are just better than others. I just realized - this seems very similar to a racial superiority argument. Skin color, likable personality, economic ability to go to school or take a risk starting a business; these all seem like things that are out of an individual's control.

He only interviews anyone remotely on the left EVERY now and then, very rarely in the grand scheme of things. Zero union representation. I think he's had a trans person on only once or twice. And he's never had a leftist streamer on. Which is odd as the political streamers are almost as popular as him, they just STRONGLY dislike him. For exactly these reasons. Like hasanabi is probably one of the most popular political commentators on the planet right now. Seems odd that a supposed "democrat" or "person on the left", only seems to focus most of his criticism on the left, and rants with conservatives about how "woke" the left is, being blatantly anti-worker, and siding with the conservatives on basically any social issue beside basics like gay marriage.

You know a couple years ago I might’ve had the same reaction to the whole “mental health day” thing as Joe did. Even as a person who is progressive. That was before I had my own mental health crisis. When you get to a place of total existential dread where you’re not even sure if you want to be alive, sometimes you would really appreciate just not having to grind. I’ve always been the kind of guy that would just push through it and get my work done when I was sick. Mental health crises are worse than being sick. Being sick in the body I can work with. Being sick in the soul is a whole other thing. I really would’ve appreciated it if somebody would’ve said, “Hey, why don’t you take some time for you. Take some time to get your head right.” It probably would’ve made me a much more grateful, productive, and loyal employee knowing that I wasn’t just a cog in the corporate wheel to them.

maybe an added solution is for easy-going companies like Google or Apple to incorporate a "do not disturb enclosure" policy for workers who are having a working-mental health crisis. @@pHAMBURGLARq yeah I guess you can take that philosophy if you want. I’m not sure who it helps. It certainly doesn’t help the person going through the mental health crisis. I don’t know that it actually helps the corporation the employee works for. It makes it more likely somebody gets hurt. It also makes the employee less productive, more discontented, and more likely to quit. Not saying it’s the corporation’s s responsibility to cater to their employees every need. Just saying sometimes some basic humanity is in order.
