Even Johnson in his infamous Remain draft wrote, "Why are we so determined to turn our back on it? Shouldn't our policy be like our policy on cake - pro having it and pro eating it?" They are not expats they are retired immigrants. An expat is somebody sent by his company for a certain period of time usually 3 to 5 years. As an expat you usually have a package to cover your all your local expenses ( school, car, health, rent etc ...) . My family were expats all their life . Diplomats are an example of public expats.

@LUMBERTHON Expats has multiple definitions and in this case they use it to describe their work situation and regarding to same they are not expats , they are just using it because they do not want to be called migrants . Expats are sent abroad as I have explained it before and indexes like the Mercer cost of living are used to adjust their wages and perks . They rarely choose their destination as it is much more of an opportunity to boost their career when after few years they are coming back and maybe will go somewhere else . Look at the Mercer index for 2020 and ask yourself why Turkmenistan is the second most expensive place to be for an expat knowing that the gdp per capita is 4000$ ! www.mercer.com/newsroom/2020-cost-of-living.html

When I heard the English lady saying that she had lost her heating allowance , honestly I have lived and worked in France for 44 years and get a small ( much appreciated ) pension British pension , I can honestly say that I have never asked for a heating allowance , I find that so dishonest living in Spain and wanting a heating allowance . Taking money away from British people who really need to heat their houses , and believe me electricity is expensive in France .

Thank you for your answer , I am a little old lady how did you know 😀 and we do get a cheaper rate from15 h to 17 h every day , and from midnight to two in the morning , I do have a log fire but being a widow and having arthritis I don't use it any more . EDF had system where if for one week ( ten days ) you didn't wash clothes , iron , cook for hours , in fact used very little electricity , my friend used paraffin heaters , then you got a fantastic rate , but they stopped that years ago because EDF were losing money on it , everybody I know young ,old , stops heating from the end of March to the beginning of November even if we feel cold , but I would still never ask Britain to help pay my heating bill . I pay 117 euros a month , and for the last few years in France the EDF has finally being getting some competition , so I am thinking about changing . I'm sorry to have gone on so long , I love the ' little old kettle lady ' remark , Bonjour à vous de la Charente Maritime , Maureen

His answer to Kermani doesn't have any relevance to his first statement, and is entirely hypocritical. The store owner did bring up a good point about the possibility of being unable to, or making it harder to import British goods if the UK leaves the EU. Overall, a good article by Newsnight because it shows the hypocrisy of some British people who accuse foreigners of coming to the UK and setting up their own way of life, when in fact, the British expats do the same thing in Spain. Funny how it's alright if they do it.

My UK pensions are still subject to UK tax as are my savings accounts in the UK. I thought there was something about no taxation without representation. This is very old news. Just need to say that unlike immigrants in England , British people don’t claim money from the Spanish government nor do they get free healthcare. Britain pays Spain for the Brits who live in Spain. We spend our money and it goes into the economy of Spain. All those who think we get free hand outs are mistaken. I think now that Britain is out the EU it has not changed Spain and Britain - as far as I’ve been told have reciprocated that it will remain the same.

You are wrong. And this for the whole of the EU. The rules where clear, but people didn't follow. Somebody moving in the EU, has to registet. If the person is more than 183 days a year in the country, this is the main residence. Main residence is the place I pay tax and have the social insurance to pay. If I have lived this way, I got everything, a local person also got. A lot of the British didn't want to live like this. Therefore, they have not registered. This way, they have been illegal even as an EU citizen. It was generous of the EU countries, to accept, that all this people had the possibility, to register before 2021. Even they never have payed tax, they will be put in the national health care and again, they will get everything, a local person will get. Retirement payment is coming from the country, you have contributed. There are different systems of tax payment on this. Depending on the agreements the countries have. What will happen with peope moving from UK to EU and vv in the future is to a certain extant clarified. A big question is, if they will keep the pension recognision. If not, it just doesn't make sense to work on the other side.
