X-Force Threat Management for IoT → ibm.biz/Secure_Your_IoT_Devices
Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), devices are much "smarter". But because these are essentially small computers, everything from a programmable light bulb to programmable thermostat can be hacked, as well as the myriad other modern conveniences like cloud-enabled refrigerators, cars, and security cameras. In this video, IBM Distinguished Engineer Jeff Crume explains the risks of IoT devices and ways you can reduce your security exposure both at home and the office.

Problem is how a normal user will deal with this. It’s a failure not making it for the normal user after all these years.

Exactly right! We need better protection OOTB (out of the box)

Xcellent stuff as always Jeff. Tools such as EDM and MDM r are always appropriate for identification and visibility on your network. Another way to secure IoT devices is to route the traffic to a "scrubbing center" to mitigate any DDoS event. One of the most effective ways to secure the entire IoT traffic and umbrella of products on a network.

That problem is very hard to deal with, often iot patches are not available and also sometimes devices producers does not still exists

Exactly right. The economics of providing ongoing patches doesn’t work in the favor of many vendors so they simply don’t

I have RT-AC88U main router and an old RT-68U as AiMesh. My thought for security stuff (PC, phone, Ipad, etc..) are on the main router and IoT (doorbell camera, light, TV, etc..) will be on the the RT-AC68U. I can also set IoT on the main router under "Guest". Which option is best and safe to protect the main router access?

I like your first idea slightly better since it sounds like it would provide greater separation but either would be a good improvement over having everything together

Very awesome video. I’m curious as to how you gave this presentation. I.e how it looks as if you are writing on my screen. What software/hardware can I use to make videos similarly. Any info would be great. Thanks ahead of time folks.

A transparent surface between the subject and the camera. Put a piece of clean glass vertically between the camera and yourself, get a neon marker, make video, profit

No profit on my end as I do it just for fun and in hopes that others can benefit. If you want to see the details, search for “how we make them” in this channel and there’s a video that explains

I'm trying to demonstrate vulnerabilities (via pen test) in IoT devices based primarily at home for a project. Do you know of any ways I could simulate such devices like cameras, thermostats, or otherwise on a virtual environment?? Or is it better to just use real devices and do it that way? Thanks
@jeffcrume
@jeffcrume 2 ай бұрын
I’d be careful about this since any actual malware could spread so make sure whatever you do is on a closed, air-gapped network segment
@oldcaptainjack
@oldcaptainjack 2 ай бұрын
Yeah this is a concern, although ideally I am not going to be using any malware for demonstration. I have gotten hold of a set of IoT devices and a second router. I want to somehow set all this up so that its all on its own separate network to my home wifi, and test purely within that network using VMs to demonstrate things (if its possible to, or not). Just need to figure out how to set up the router and second network as a whole.@@jeffcrume

Ha! You may be too late for that, though. According to chatgpt (which may, of course be hallucinating), "To find a car without any form of computerization or electronic control, you typically have to go back to the early 1980s or even earlier." Cars before then are going to be hard to find parts for. It was a nice, thought, though 😊
