13 years as a SP ......never worked a Gate , not even 1 minute!! I am a Former Security Policeman 6 years Active/9 years Air National Guard and I can tell you I wouldn't trade my time in the USAF Security Police for anything ...I loved it! It is what you make it. I was stationed at Dyess AFB for 3 years in the Strategic Air Command..we had a squadron of B52D's..4 Nuclear uploaded on alert at all times. We also had 3 squadron's of C-130's. I did Fly Away Security. We trained 4 times a year in ABGD at Ft. Hood Army Base against the US Army 7th Calvary Scouts. I was on one of the first EST's..Emergency Service Team's (SWAT) in the Air Force. I got to attend the FBI SWAT School and we got to put on EST demonstrations along with the Combat Control Team across the street from Security Control. (We loaded on 2 C 130's with a Combat Control Team climbed to 20,000 ft., the CCT did a halo jump. After deploying the CCT the 130's spiraled down and did an Assault landing on a dirt strip. We deployed in our Armored vehicles out the back of the C130's and took the objective, reloaded with the nuclear weapon we recovered from the Terrorists and did a Assault takeoff)!! I was stationed for 1 year in Turkey at a secret MUNSS site. I was the NCOIC of Arms and Equipment for the Security detachment and also the Team Leader for the RRT ( Recapture and Recovery Team) a joint Turkish American Anti-terrorist Team. When I rotated back to the World, I was assigned for 2 years at Langley AFB, VA to Headquarters Tactical Air Command. The unit I was in is the Tactical Air Command Guard...we were the Security for the CINCTAC (Commander and Chief Tactical Air Command..4 Star General). During my time in the Alabama Air National Guard I got to go to "Sliver Flag Alpha" in Indian Springs, NV, the USAF SP Desert Warfare and Survival School. It is what you make it, I did a lot of different things in the Security Police Field....AND LOVED EVERY MINUTE... except for the time I spent in a Turkish Military Prison..but that is another story!

Never working a gate just means you were a Security Specialist, not LE. On the LE side, everyone started out on the gates. The good ones would work their way over to patrol. They merged the Security and LE specialties of the Security Police into one specialty called Security Forces in 1997. The merger was pretty chaotic at the time since we had two separate academies at Lackland at the time, and us LE guys knew practically nothing about flightline security ops, and good luck sending a security specialist to a domestic violence investigation or a DUI call. I was in an interesting position prior to the merger because I was stationed at McClellan AFB and the USAF only sent LE specialists there. This was because we had a very small flightline security mission (consisting of three posts, Security 1, Security 1A and Security 2). The rest of the posts were all LE functions (gates, patrol and the comm center). But even though I received flightline training at McClellan, after the merger, I deployed to the desert, and I gotta admit we didn't know crap about actual security ops compared to the folks deployed there from bases with an actual security mission. I also went to the reserves afterwards and was stationed at Travis. This was a few years after the merger and it was a learning curve for me to become proficient on their flightline security ops - which were much more traditional and representative of bases with a REAL security-side mission, unlike McClellan (which only had one small, restricted area with a few Priority-C KC-135s on it and an occasional visiting transient Priority-B aircraft from another base on a stopover that we might have to guard. In any case, I agree with you. I left active duty in 1998 and I'm still in touch with a core group of guys from my squadron. We may have been bored or frustrated at times while we were there, but we all look back at it with great memories and pride that we were a part of that.

Four years as an SP-K9 handler. I did nothing but gates and guard work in arctic-cold weather. It's the worst job in the USAF. The needed Asvab score ties with becoming a cook. It's as much police work as being a school crossing guard. I've never made or seen an arrest in that time.

Odd. In Vietnam we worked with the Marines almost exclusively and got along well. We jointly defended bases and were quite successful, none were ever overrun, even though damn the NVA and VC tried. This AF Security bashing wouldn't of happened back then. The bond back then I think was the Marines were under the thumb of the Navy and we used to be under the Army so we had a mutual little brother thing going on.

What's up with Marines always going onto KZbin videos of other branches and then bashing them (those guys must be really busy if they have enough time to bash people on KZbin)? Personally, I like to look at all branches equal. Also, here's a random thought: the Marines have no room to talk, since their branch is the second easiest to get into.

I was security forces (Security Police as it was then) in the mid-90s). Back then you could be selected as a dog handler right out of training. I don't know about now, but sometime in late-90s/early 2000s, they required you to be an E-4 and do a second enlistment prior to being sent to dog school. It makes sense, really, since you want airman who already have some decent law enforcement and force protection experience before you invest the time and money in giving them a Military Working Dog. The MWD program training is good training though, and if you have aspirations to be a civilian LEO K-9 handler down the road, it's great experience. I have several friends I was stationed with who were MWD handlers and then got out and went on to become K9 officers at various civilian LE agencies.

Don't waste your energy on someone like him/her. I would be very surprised if their military resume extends past C.O.D. or Medal Of Honor. @@thomasryan2679 The eggs aren't going to shoot at you though. That's as dumb as saying a cook at Denny's serves their community the same way a police officer does. I appreciate the service of all military vets (I am one of them, who also happened to be USAF Security Forces and now a civilian LEO), but trying to compare a cook to a cop is no different than comparing a sailor who works in an administrative office to a SEAL. Yeah, they both served. But in vastly different ways that involved vastly different risks. I personally was involved in an on-duty shooting while in the USAF and one of my good SF friends was responsible for evacuating the Kobar Towers barracks after he saw the truck with the bomb in it pull up next to the building and the terrorist run away (he got an Airman's Medal for it). I also was in tech school with the guy who took out an active shooter armed with an assault rifle at the hospital of a base in Washington (I think it was Fairchild or McChord - can't remember now - it was almost 30 years ago) with an M9 pistol at over 50 meters distance after hauling ass to the scene on a bicycle. (He also got an Airman's Medal and another medal that I can't recall now.) I never seen a guy cooking eggs in a chow hall get awarded an Airman's Medal for their valor. Again - not trying to disparage some airman working in Services, but it's not "on the same level," as you say, as being a Security Forces member, just as being Security Forces is not on the same level as being Pararescue or a Combat Controller. They're all different and present with differing risks and responsibility levels. The airman who took out the active shooter did it because it was his job. If he missed, he could have been killed himself and countless other victims at the hospital could have been maimed and killed. My friend who was at the gate next to the barracks in Saudi was there doing his job. If he hadn't been paying attention, he and dozens more airmen and soldiers in the barracks could have been maimed and killed. The airman cooking eggs in the chow hall is doing his job. But the difference is that if he's not paying attention, the worse thing that could happen is a possible grease burn and someone complaining about their meal. I hope you can see the difference. If not, there's no hope for you.

It depends on your perspective. I was in your position too, served before the merger as LE and also for a few years after the fields were combined. The early years during and right after the merger were chaotic, but I think that's all been worked out a long time ago now. Some people actually preferred LE and some people preferred the security side of things. It's all an individual preference. I think you and I were probably just a little jaded because we signed up for and trained to be LE, and then in 1997, they threw us LE guys onto a flightline with virtually no training and threw a security guy into a patrol car with similarly little LE training and expected us each to do the other's job. I hated the merger at the time and also got out of active duty a year later. But after I got out, I went back to the reserves and went to an SF unit. Even though only a couple years had passed, it was clear the transition pains from the merger had been streamlined and taken care of. And the flight chiefs knew the talents of their troops. If you excelled at LE ops, you'd likely be assigned to base patrol almost exclusively. So, it wasn't really bad. Things kind of worked themselves out.
