Hey Sedge. Just wanted to comment again. I originally made a comment a year ago when this video was uploaded. But I have watched it several times, including a few days ago when I was asked, by one of my family, to build an 8ft x 4ft Boot Rack with 20 various size cubbies. Videos like this are such a useful resource to serve as reminders for certain techniques. Thank you again and please keep up the good work. 🙏🏻

Thanks for this EXCELLENT video, I now know what I need, to start my woodworking project at school! One thing, though, that seems off to me, and this might be me, so I wanted to hear it from you. It's about the shelf in the middle joint, to me it doesn't really look like the shelf is in the center? It looks more to one side, than the other? Thanks, I hope you can clear this up for me. Keep up the great work doing these videos! Cheers.

@@sedgetool - Thank you so much for replying to my comment, it means a lot. The work you're putting into all these videos are much appreciated! Aha, that makes sense, thank you. So If I then wish to have that shelf, etc. exactly in the middle I would just have to measure out for that, correct? Another question, in regards to my upcoming woodworking project, if you don't mind... I want to assemble my piece of furniture with dominos, and that's what you've shown in this video as well, but what if all my sides are beveled at 45 degrees, so that I don't have a flat/square edge to rest the dominos' flap against? How would I position the dominos then? All I can think about is the good old manual way = measuring them out, and having to be dead exact, for the alignment, but this could easily go south, especially when I want it all to come together flush and nice, right? What's your take on this, if you don't mind. Once again, thank you for your time and expertise, it's greatly appreciated.

Absoluting love watching these videos so much so that your videos are my reference library when I get stuck or forget a step. BUT, got this about putting in a shelf using the Domino. Now how about putting a 1 1/2 x3/4 x36 inch inch board T ing off a 2 inch board at the mid way point of the 2 inch board and the top of each must match up? The reference flaps won't work. Thanks for all the content you put out on the domino. Invaluable! Especially as I only purchased mine a few days ago! Quick question if I may - for the shelf joint, how do you align it when the stock is say 15mm thick? The distance of 10mm from the plate to the centre of the cutter means that the hole will be really close to the surface. How would you centre the hole in this scenario?

Greetings Sedge! I need a bit of help with the domino. Trying to make the 4th joint in this video. I am using the DF 700 EQ, whereas you are using the DF 500. At about 13:10 into the video, you talk about how the distance from the bottom of the plate to the midpoint of the cutter is 10 mm. That is not the distance on my 700, it's more like 15 mm. So when I cut the mortise for the dominos, it is around 5 mm off. Question one is: Is the distance from the bottom of the plate on the 700 actually different than that of the 500? Or am I missing something. I do have the cutting depth set as low as it can go at 10 mm. Question 2 is: If the distances are different, what is the methodology to accommodate the 5 mm difference? Thanks from another Purdue grad!

Great video. But, HELP! I have a DF700, so for shelves in the middle my model doesn't center it at 10mm, , it's 15mm, so is the only solution to add a 5mm shim under the shelf to raise it up in order to center it for the horizontal cut, then move the line 5mm for the vertical cut? Surely Festool has a better solution than that.

Sadge, love all the videos and the explanations you give. Question: when attaching a middle shelf anywhere on a center panel, is there a way to attach another panel on the opposite side but same location? Kind of like a through domino that holds the left shelf, going through the middle divider and into the right panel, but not using the “knock down system”? Thanks for your time
@sedgetool
@sedgetool 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can! on the center panel do a through mortise...... Use the setting for the side panels at a plunge depth of 25 ....use a 5x30 domino when gluing up from either side start in the center panel...this should allow for any discrepancies in tenon/ domino length ..... I should do a video on this ..... Thanks Victor ..hope this makes sense ....

Hello! For middle shelves your ideas will only work if You are dealing with 20 mm plates - otherwise You will be badly off-centered as the reference for the Domino is NOT the bottom which is fixed at 10 mm - any good ideas how to deal with 25 mm boards are welccome
@sedgetool
@sedgetool 2 жыл бұрын
ok ... after some thought ...you could use this method if you shim the base of the DF500 domino with a 2.5 mm shim..
@DieWolf57
@DieWolf57 2 жыл бұрын
@@sedgetool THX as there are 2 M5 threads at the bottom - I cut 2 plates of stainless steel 1.5 and 1 mm respectively and screwed them to the bottom - this should do the job for 25 mm and also work for 22 and 23 mm boards

Sedge, something I have never seen on any of yours or the Festool lives is, it’s one thing to have the four mitered corners using domino’s, but what if you have a bottom of a box and/or a back of a box that needs to be mitered into that? Is it physically possible to use dominoes in that situation? I.e. I have a hope chest to make, where I’m going to miter the four outside corners, but also miter the bottom into the four corners as well. Is that physically possible to use dominos in the bottom that connects to the sides?

Interesting application....... I have never found myself needing to do this...... It seems to me that it would have to be glued up all simultaneously .all 5 pieces ...... even then I would not build it like this........I would use a rabbeted bottom or flush butt joint with a decorative profile or molding......... then add a base with legs....... I hope this makes sense
@mim2046
@mim2046 3 жыл бұрын
@@sedgetool that is exactly what I was thinking in regard to being simultaneous or ending up doing a rabbet joint at the bottom. I just wanted to confirm my thought process was correct in my thinking. Thanks again! 👍

Sedge, after watching your video on "Domino Joints" I was curious 1) Does a mid-shelf require mechanical fasteners in addition to Dominos? 2) In that same vain, should a fixed shelf, or top / bottom on a melamine cabinet have a minimal dado, say .125" to facilitate glue up?
@sedgetool
@sedgetool 3 жыл бұрын
You can dado and use mechanical fasteners.... I use no glue and screws when building cabinets... I usually use prefinished ply so glue does not stick .... this video shows the process studio.kzbin.infoTILGZxhRdBQ/edit
