As a shop owner the best advice I can give is find a shop you can trust ,get referrals from friends stop looking for the lowest prices and look for value.Do regular maintenance don't drive your car until it's falling apart and when told you need a lot of repairs be surprised that it cost so much.The worst scams I see come from the National chain stores and dealerships where mechanic is paid commission.

Hard to find a good mechanic. I’ve known only 1 or 2 honest mechanics in my lifetime. The guy I’m working with now, not a friend but friend of the family, I think he’s been taking me for a ride. Doesn’t provide receipts of the parts. Don’t know if he’s even properly diagnosing a problem. Probably just goes “Let’s replace the fuel pump, see if that’s the problem” ... and I’m the moron giving this guy my money.

Best thing to do, is learn something about the things you own.. You don't need to know everything.. Just learn how basic parts work and how they fail.. Learn basic maintenance.. That includes Cars, Refrigerators and plumbing. Just the costly things.. Cheap TV's and cheap things don't matter.. It's always cheaper to get a new one..

Someone tried to do that to my friend once, had to book the car in, which would be R2000 and that's not even the repairs yet. But when he told her she's not allowed to fill up her water tank herself I told her to call her dad. He wanted a constant customer to come in every time the water tank was empty and she'd have to pay him for that. Her dad told us to get the hell out of there

I work at a Big O tire store, that also does heavy repairs, in the mid-west and it sickens me to know how easy this is done and how often it is done also! I think the few bad seeds ruin it for everybody because we treat everybody with integrity and honesty at the Big O Tires location that I am employed at, but because of the bad apples, many times, customers still aren't satisfied and don't have the confidence in their purchase to be happy with it also. And this problem is very sad to see. There is definitely a lack of professionalism in the automotive industry, and it should be dealt with, with the strongest arm of the law. Because this fraud taking place is sickening. Fraud is theft with a smile.

I'm a guy, and was once scammed by the dealership where I purchased my car (many years ago, and dealer no longer exists). I took the car in for routine maintenance, and had to have a full brake job because 'the brake pads fell out' when they inspected them - work was done without authorization, and the car was kept 2 days. When I got the car back, I immediately noticed that the driver door was NOT mine as the controls were scratched! They of course denied anything happened. I never returned there.
@rogerdavis685
@rogerdavis685 8 жыл бұрын
Most of these items are observable failures, you can inspect the part by grabbing it, trying to move it, or see wear in some way. I NEVER allow work to be done, unless I see a damaged part, or hear, or smell something wrong. Everyone should require some proof, before work is done. Have your mechanic look it over, point to the part, and show you the problem. Tire scams are the easiest to spot.

So many people in this comment section obviously didn't understand the video, so here, let me explain it better for y'all; The guy behind the register isn't an actual mechanic. What they're doing here is showing how shops use the ignorance of their customers to rip them off. THEY'RE NOT ACTUALLY CHARGING THE CUSTOMERS FOR WHAT THEY'RE QUOTING THEM!!!

Second repair. Again, it depends on the severity of the damage. If the headgasket is badly leaking, then YES it will cause damage to your engine. If your cylinder head or entire engine is damaged, then it's an expensive time consuming job to fix. 800 dollars to replace e headgasket, factoring in labor costs, seems rather reasonable. Some engines it's a straightforward easy job, others like V6 minivans, it's a major job

1:58 Those reactions are so fake. I have been in a waiting room when the counter guy told a customer his brake job would cost about $1000. You know what he did? He pulled out his wallet. He didn't pretend to puke. And, seriously? $500-600 for two outer tie rods and four tires is CHEAP! That's just a little bit more than the cost of the parts alone!

I've been to good shops and bad and I remember how much pressure they put on me when I was really young with my first truck. I knew nothing and just came in for an alignment and new it had some minor issue with the driver control arm. They told me I had 2400 dollars worth of front end suspension work. I didn't want anything to do with that truck I felt disgusted with it. I also was ignorant to vehicles, so what was I suppose to do? He'll I didn't spend that money... I literally couldn't. My truck had 158k miles then. And is still going 240k miles today and strong. Now it's finally getting old and "actually,"needing suspension work. It needed work back then and it needs work now, the point is sometimes they pressure you into getting it down RIGHT THIS SECOND! When it could last a lot longer than you think. Now I know a lot more about vehicles and I plan to fix my little chevy s10 up and get her to 300k. I've bought many vehicles for cheap and now I'm collecting 90's vehicle to early 2000's and love every learning experience I get even if it does piss me off when a car I just fixed up starting leaking green :/. But thats how you learn... look it up and fix it yourself. Buy multiple cars so you can do this. Learn a fix once and it's an investment, but pay some one to fix it once and you will pay for it again.

So you're portraying mechanics to be scam artists? As a mechanic at a Dealer, I am very upset by this.. Occasionally, yes, I may recommend a little as we call "fluff," but at that point you should think about changing certain fluids and cleaning certain parts at 100,000 miles.. Not all mechanics are out to scam people.. Especially at dealership's. We enjoy having a good name our customers can trust with vehicles.. I don't understand why we are seen as assholes who only wanna take your money. But also understand, most of us, like myself, get paid piece work and have families to feed, just like you do. It's a hard living as a mechanic.. We need to eat too.

How hard is it to just be a good and honest mechanic? I just don’t get it. Why can’t these guys be completely transparent and keep happy customers coming back as opposed to f***ing them in the ass, making money off them for a short time, and then losing a very unhappy customer. I don’t get nor will I ever get it.
@Infinitrium

The third one seems like the truest ripoff. Two worn outer tie rods would only wear out your front tires, not all four. However, the quoted cost of 500-600 is reasonable for replacing 4 tires, 2 tie rods and labor. Tires aren't cheap and neither are the labor rates at most repair shops.

Enough of seeing how these Sabatoging low life so called "mechanic" rip, men and women off, even purposely balancing your tires incorrectly so your steering wheel shakes violently inorder to sell you unnecessary suspension parts ( whuch most the time aren't even installed) What can be done that it doesn't suck the life out of you trying to get these jerks to be forced to stop or be shut down and fined??? Is this "Fraud"? which is a "crime" and why are the officials not involved? ? The heck with complaining. I want to see an arrest!

Always get a second opinipn? That's throwing money down the drain! If you bring your vehicle in, we charge a diagnosis fee. Why? Because we get paid for the labor we perform, not by the hour! Meaning we're not going to waste our time for nothing. However, if you choose to get the repair done that day or even weeks from now, that diagnosis fee GOES TWARDS YOUR PURCHASE!!! You go somewhere else, you lose money.

But as Anderson said, you would be wise to get a second opinion before spending large amounts of money on any car repair. Furthermore, if the mechanic or repair shop seems angry that you want a second opinion, then don't even consider going back there

I am disgusted by mechanics that rip off women, but honestly IMO the repairs shown in this clip don't seem all that bad. For example, the first one. Bad lower control arms probably mean worn lower ball joints and bushings, worn tie rods mean your wheels can move around left to right when you're driving in a straight line. Depending on how bad those parts are worn, it might not be a good idea to drive the vehicle until they are repaired. An alignment is always recommended after those are fixed

How is telling someone they need four tires and a couple of tie rods ripping them off ? And then he further says he wouldn't take it on a long trip. Now granted, we as viewers have no idea of the actual condition of these parts but let's pretend they are bad. Is the mechanic or service writer in this case suppose to sugar coat it ? If it's bad it's bad. You gotta remember something when it comes to owing a car, it's gonna break. There is no point getting pissed off at the shop or mechanic. They didn't build it, they didn't buy it, and they're certainly didn't break it. You did. If you think they are ripping you off, go somewhere else. This is not rocket science. If I'm shopping for a new TV and I see one I like, I'm going to shop around for the best price. Common sense. If you lay out thousands in repairs to your car, especially to a shop you have never been to before, you're an idiot.

How do you know it’s a lie I am a technician and all the stuff he listed is accurate if they provided pictures of what’s bad and how to prove it then it’s not a lie people always think I’m trying to rip them off with state inspections it’s called a safety inspection for a reason and if your tire rods have more movement than Micheal Jackson then you need to replace them or if your tires are at the 2/32 wear bars they should be replaced

I think, seriously.. an I know I'll get some hate for this.. Women should learn a thing or two about cars! The way I see it is, you wouldn't operate a welder or a tractor without knowing a thing or two about how they work. Women have these cute little female oriented cars that they just use everyday but have no idea how or why they work. Whatever they look like on the outside they're all still machines with combustion engines. It would be so good if you had to pass a basic mechanical knowledge test to be allowed to own a car.

Ellie5621 that's nice, chain stores are going to charge you for basic stuff anyways, your better off with smaller shops since a lot give more bang for your buck sometimes and you can sometimes talk them down to a better rate or they throw some free stuff in your direction to keep your patronage. But again it depends on where you go.
