WOW!!!! I had no idea they made planers 12 or more wide that are hand held!!! I bet that big boy can get away from you real quickly if you’re not careful!!!! You’ve gotta tell us why you want one of these things??? With all of the tools and stationary equipment you have on hand, this one seems unnecessary if you ask me…..especially for almost 2,500$$$$$!!!!! YIKES!!! The New Yankee shop ain’t all that!! I can do things with hand tools that would blow most people’s minds!!! Hand tools are far superior to all the huge, expensive, expensive to run!!!, and crazy dangerous machines that so many think they need to have to get things done! To be honest…..this one sort of surprises me I guess, I just can’t think of why you would want such a tool enough to justify the cost….

I used to be the guy that would build things from the lumber you produce. But, after too many back surgeries, I am relegated to remembering what I used to be able to do. Thanks for letting me smell the smell of fresh cut lumber, the diesel fumes, and run my fingers through the sawdust. You give us more than just easy entertainment. You give the opportunity to be a “real, regular guy again.”

Bull dozers and excavators are very rough on the planks on trailer decks. No matter how good the operator is. .. Back in the day when there was lots of farm trucks around with wooden body’s on them, they used poplar planks and boards to build them around my area. Rebuild them every 8 to 10 years or so.

Lot of guys back in the day used rough sawn lumber that was three inches thick for those lowboy trailers for heavy equipment. Would not be any harder to do for you and might last longer for them. Just a thought. Dozers and excavators are hard on trailer decks with those metal tracks.

Nathan, you could treat the red oak the way my paternal grandfather ( a farmer) used to treat his fence posts. He coated them with multiple coats of linseed oil. One of my uncles had a pair of poplar livestock racks that Grandpa treated with linseed oil in the early 1960s. Those racks were still in service until my uncle passed away in 2017( over fifty years after they were treated).

I'm guessing that the board with the pith in it was discarded to firewood cuts. In my area poor folks would also love those oak slabs for firewood even though bark makes a lot of ash compared to solid wood. Just depends on how much you need firewood what you are willing to burn to stay warm. I use to go to a mill and get that stuff for a couple I knew on hard times. They did not have a truck so I would load my pickup and drop it by their house. If I ever was driving down the road and saw their wood stack low, I would just go get some next time I had a free minute so they would not run out. Funny thing was later in life when I was broke down more, other folks did the same for me. Funny how that works. Usually it was either the local saw mill for oak cut offs or slabs or go to a friends and cut up his top pile from the loggers doing their once a decade harvest. Tops from oak, hickory or walnut make good firewood. Those crooked limbs were no good for lumber but sure heated homes well.

Nathan, I really enjoy your videos, and try to watch as many as I can. I differ in my opinion about sawing a log shorter. If the log is a saw log, it's staying the cut length. If it was a firewood log, it would have been cut into firewood. When someone asks for a certain length board, I tell them that I'll find a log for them. The exception is a customer who wanted 6' cedar, so I cut a 12' log in half, and sawed the order. He has a short bed truck.

I retired from construction and was around a lot of equipment trailers . One company I worked for had there own equipment and trailer. I was there for twelve years and the deck never had to be replaced and thats in the snowy , salty and wet north east hauling a dozer, backhoe, bobcat ,concrete forms. For other companies hauling dozers and excavators I don't recall seeing new boards . Maybe the guy wanting the boards side loads which tends to tear things up

Nathan, you seem to be getting a lot of blade irregularities (grooving?) throughout the cut and it leaves a path of sawdust in them, it seems to come and go. Do you know what causes that and how to get rid of it? I'm having that happen as well right after swapping to Silvertip blades and I never had that issue with the blades that came with the HM126. I've made some adjustments but it never has gone away completely...and that's in poplar. All my previous blade cutting was smooth as silk unless I got a tooth bent. I've tried three of the silvertips so far and all have done this same thing where the wood is rough part of the way through the cut and there seems to be no rhyme or reason...not caused by knots or anything I can see. I had put on a new drive belt as well and I thought that may be causing it to loose tension quickly as it compresses but after seeing yours do the same thing I'm hoping you see this question and have some experience to share.

Can't you find people that can save that wood to burn in a wood stove or wood-fired heater in the winter? I just hate to see it burned with no benefit, other than the fire ant wood.
