Today we’re visiting a great wee pub in Dublin’s Baggot Street called Doheny & Nesbitt. But I thought I’d walk round to it from the side of the famous Stephen’s Green, just to let those of you who are not so familiar with Dublin’s geography, get a feel for where the pub is.

While in Baggot Street some of you may remember my film of O’Donoghues pub a while back? Of course, that’s in Baggot Street too. Similarly James Toner’s pub, which I also covered, is also located in lower Baggot Street, so Baggot street is the place to come if you want a pint in a nice Dublin Victorian Pub. But of course, finding a good pub in Dublin is not so hard really. There are many more good pubs than I could possibly cover here - although obviously it’s good fun trying!
So our destination for today is on the other side of the road - Doheny & Nesbitt. I should say from the ouset that I’m not mad about these screened terraces that have sprung up around pubs everywhere, as a result of COVID I think. They really block the view from the street of many of these old Victorian buildings. Time to pull them down I think. Anyway, sorry to start off with a negative, I’ll feel more positive when I get inside and get myself a nice pint of Guinness.
I always think there’s something theatrical about arriving in a new pub. And appreciate the staging here, in this 19th Century bar. This ceiling for example is papier mache and was recently restored. Like all Dublin’s great pubs, this one also prides itself on serving a good pint of the national drink, and here’s two settling on the bar. And we always knew it, but here’s the proof in writing of the black drink’s medicinal qualities. And of course the walls are full, as is the case in many Irish pubs, with all kinds of drinking and sports memorabilia. But here’s something you’ll only find in an Irish pub. This is a unique looking relief plaque commemorating what was called the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic back in 1916.
I’m venture into in the back part of the bar, which is not original, but was created in Victorian style so as not to look out of place. This is where you can eat or watch the sports on TV. As I head back into the original bar… and as I pan around you can see the nice little snugs that allow you to have a nice drink with a group of friends.
The building pre-dates the pub, but the first public house was established here in the 1840s. At that time it was known as Delahunty’s. It changed hands a couple of times until it came to be owned by Ned Doheny and Tom Nesbitt that lends its name to the establishment, though it’s now under new management, but of course, it’s such an institution, changing the name again is unthinkable.
On the way out we have another look at the front of this brilliant pub, checking out a fabulous brass sign - Tea and Wine Merchant.

You in a pub! I’m shocked, its not like you 😆I don’t like the screened road side seating areas either, or even where seating is put on the road or pavement since covid. Where I live, they have been taking away disabled parking bays to put seating up only recently 🤨. A nice pub, you don’t see many like that now, they all seem to be theme new theme pubs, not that I frequent them much now, can’t afford to 😄
