As for the furniture arrangement and choices... you honestly don't need a lot of money to do well in that department. You don't need to be rich or have a lot of money to get decent furniture. I'm not thinking they need expensive home quality furniture in fact cheap ikea furniture would work just fine. I would have said its due to them being young... but my older brother when he was that age ( high school transition to college) did a way better job using his part time money to buy furniture and rearrange the basement/storage room he was told to live in due to the lack off room available in the house. He made that room look really nice with an actual decent color palette to compliment the "furniture" that already existed in the basement. Because the basement lacks sunlight and was relatively gloomy he used that as part of his color palette. He stuck to the black, gray, white and brown colors when buying furniture. Its really just that simple.
