Good move selling NSC fast, and your diversification looks very good. I think adding SCHD, and maybe even working it up to 10% of your portfolio over time would possibly reduce volatility and risk that much further. I also personally would probably increase your exposure to oil, chemical, utilities and real-estate by 1-2% and reduce food. Oil is going nowhere despite America and smaller european countries push for EV/Solar, and growing Countries like India/China need cheap energy for advancing industry. Chemicals are needing in all sorts of products and some of the large chemical companies pay a dividend and have solid track records. Real estate is finite, and REITs have some solid payouts with good track records, but I personally wouldn't go for something like O due to over-valuation of P/E, so I own BDC/CEF like that other gentlement with lower valuations, or a person could just buy something like VNQ(Vanguard's REIT etf). I also saw some research showing REIT's and Utilities aren't correlated to stocks or bonds and utilities especially reduce portfolio risk beyond stocks/bonds combination with similar or better returns.

The cost basis is serious!!! That is for sure! I am so glad I finally got RTX way up there in the top 10, it had been a long-term goal of mine to have more exposure to defense/aerospace. Top 10 is looking good. I tend to follow the diversification philosophy espoused by Peter Lynch and others, which is to limit any individual position to no more than 5% of the portfolio. That seems like a good approach to minimize risk to capital. Do you have any thoughts about a similar approach to diversify dividend income? For example, 5% of capital in Altria is likely to result in more than 5% of dividend income at risk with Altria. Should a single position be limited to provide no more than 5% of income?
@ppcian

Such a great question! I've done well "going big" on my highest-conviction stocks. SBUX, for example, is now a staggering 10% of the entire portfolio. Of course, I would only go big like this with a stock I truly understood, and it works with my level of risk tolerance. Regarding your question on MO, I do look at things that way. Sin stocks are only 7.8% of my portfolio by value, but comprise 17.1% of my dividend cash flow. The 17.1% is big and too concentrated, but at the same time I've got goals and these stocks just "get it done" for me. If that % was much more than 20-22%, I'd probably stop. Over the VERY long-term, I will scale those percentages back, but I'm ok going more focused than I otherwise would to reach my shorter-term goals. Complex, good question - lots of food for thought. THANK YOU for your very long-time support, my friend!

Ian Starbucks is 7% of my portfolio. Thinking of taking it down to 5% and keeping it at 5 for the future. Are you worried about the tensions with Taiwan/China and keeping SBUX at 10% of your portfolio?

Great observation Ivan; personally I force myself to diversify by imposing a 2% limit on any single stock I own. My core positions are large Cap and SmallMid Cap indexes.

Thanks for your comment, Ivan! I do believe the Taiwan/China tensions are one of the bigger risks for SBUX. Will be interesting to see how things go, but I tend to be an optimist! The upside in China is so large, but the political risk is real. (Disc: I’m long SBUX)

I am so impressed with the information you provide and your portfolio is amazing and your strategic planning is so thorough. Such a good question. Probably not. I just have such a tough time selling. Typically, only sell if there is a major reason to do so. One recent example was NSC. Had a large gain, and got concerned long-term downside of the Ohio incident was not fully priced-in. Wishing you all the greatest, my friend!
@bestillsounds1210
@bestillsounds1210 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking about this, an investor probably shouldn’t consolidate overlapping positions for those positions in the bottom half of SCHD, since they reformulate every year in March. It seems like a SCHD’s top 10 to 15 holdings don’t change all that much, so maybe consolidating those would make sense. My thoughts are if you sell your positions since they are overlapping with SCHD, and then SCHD gets rid of those positions, you’re kind of screwed.

Just curious, how do you define your retirement? If you depend on your dividend stocks, you still need to manage your stocks after your retirement. And if the market went back, your retirement life will be impacted as well
@ppcian
@ppcian Жыл бұрын
I will probably always “work”, but I define retirement as complete financial peace-of-mind. And, having the flexibility to take time off whenever I like. The stocks I own tend to require little management, but you’re right there’s some element of portfolio management work. Yes, there is the risk of a dividend cut during unprecedented times, but in general I have faith the companies I own will do just fine in aggregate. Good points! Wishing you a great one!

I use my ROTH at Fidelity for alot of dividend growth stocks and funds. Especial Reits, those are very messy when it comes to taxes. But now I dont have to worry about it in a ROTH! I thought it was funny that you said you wanted to add SCHD to your portfolio, I decided to max my ROTH out with 6,500 in SCHD. @ppcian

Such an interesting point. My portfolio is largely a reflection of my areas of expertise. Historically, I have not been quite as well-versed in deep financial analysis when it comes to the bank industry. There is no doubt about it, my financial exposure is lower. I do believe my forthcoming addition of SCHD will help make up for this. And, I do have exposure to whole life insurance outside the dividend portfolio. That insurance is basically an investment in the same types of assets that banks purchase - Treasuries and commercial real estate. So, I do look at that, in a way, as my financials exposure. It's a liability though, as it takes money out of my pocket each month. Wishing you all the greatest. (Disc: I'm long Treasuries. And, I plan to open a position in SCHD.)

$BMO is a great one to build out right now. Bank stocks have taken a bit of a hit recently, but they will bounce back and the dividends will continue to increase.

Do you sell options on your positions? If not, you should consider it. It will supercharge your dividends! ;)

Not as of now, as I'm too worried about my stocks getting called away. That said, I should not dismiss the opportunity. Could get me to my goals a lot faster! Wishing you a great one.

I probably need to open a position in Starbucks. It's hard to invest in things I can't spend money on. I don't waste money on 5.00 coffee. I just can't throw money away when I can brew 10 cent coffee at home. But that said I invest in McDonalds but don't eat that garbage either.

Thanks for sharing! I’m excited about SBUX ambitions in China. If they pull it off and political climate stays ok for US-China relations, they could double their biz IMHO. I love MCD for their food (although I only eat it upon rare occasion), but also their incredible real estate portfolio. Wishing you a great one! (Disc: I’m long SBUX and MCD)

Nice video! I like your roadmap approach. As I am closer to retire (< 5 years), I increased few Utilities yielding 4.5% on avg, few pipelines yielding 6.5%... reducing my dividend growth rate, but increasing dividend yield rate. Those are essential assets subject to government approvals for regulated activities. Utilities might faced lower increased than expected, but they can't go down... Pipeline could face leaks and environmental issues, so I limit them to 2.5% max cap allocation each... also reduced my maximum capital allocation to 7.5% (trimming as soon as > limit)... I own few sin stocks (MO, PM & STZ), but keeping them to less than 2% now...

Yan, I don't understand why you don't care about options. You are looking for income when there is a simple solution in front of your eyes, which screams, that could increase your income, such as to keep it simple, the "covered call" or the "wheel strategy". You are a mystery to me. Try at least one covered call on just one of your stocks ! Let's take the example of 'NSC' which you recently sold. You would have sold an 'at the money' covered call or better still an 'in the money' covered call you would have sold your shares but big difference compared to a 'simple sale' you would have obtained an income (the extrinsic value of the option) which according to the number of shares in the portfolio would have represented thousands of dollars. So why make a 'simple sale' when you can sell with income. Think about..... Happy Easter Yan to you and your family.
