In North Carolina, a lake featured in the movie “Dirty Dancing” overtopped a dam. People in surrounding neighborhoods were evacuated, although there were no immediate concerns it would fail. People also were evacuated from Newport, Tennessee, a city of about 7,000 people, amid concerns about a dam near there, although officials later said the structure hadn’t failed. Tornadoes hit some areas, including one in Nash County, North Carolina, that critically injured four people. Atlanta received a record 11.12 inches (28.24 centimeters) of rain in 48 hours, the most the city has seen in a two-day period since record keeping began in 1878, Georgia’s Office of the State Climatologist said on the social platform X. The previous mark of 9.59 inches (24.36 cm) was set in 1886. Some neighborhoods were so badly flooded that only car roofs could be seen poking above the water.

Hurricane Helene left an enormous path of destruction across Florida and the entire southeastern U.S. on Friday, killing at least 40 people in four states, snapping towering oaks like twigs, tearing apart homes and sending rescue crews on desperate missions to save people from floodwaters. The Category 4 hurricane knocked out power to some hospitals in southern Georgia, and Gov. Brian Kemp said authorities had to use chainsaws to clear debris and open up roads. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph) when it made landfall late Thursday in a sparsely populated region in Florida’s rural Big Bend area, home to fishing villages and vacation hideaways where Florida’s Panhandle and peninsula meet.

Why are people who build their homes near the ocean so shocked when a hurricane levels it?
@GGGGorillaАй бұрын
Because it's a little unprecedented in this manner I've never seen something like that in the area of Florida my entire life... so since climate change isn't real there's no worry...until it's too late At least we'll never have casualties in the thousands like those poor shit hole countries that don't have a weather alert system like... Puerto Rico 😅

Maybe ppl should stop building on the coastline and expecting taxs to pay for it. Shouldnt be able to build within a mile of any natural resource. That way everyone can enjoy the coastline. Not ppl who beatly use it because they are bored of it most the time or to busy to enjoy it. Tgink about it even the ppl living on a natural resource are only able to use that one spot. Not even mentioning all the yard chemicals that leach into the water. Gates block animals from getting to fish and water. Im not just talking oceans im talking lakes and rivers. Only a small portion of land should be approved for restaurants and business. A very small portion should be for homes and they should have to pay an insane amount to occupy that land because it prevents anyone or any animal from being able to enjoy a natural resources. Go ernment should have never approved it for owning, or building. It should belong to everyone. Also if you have a city or town, you should have to accept trash no matter what at the dump because if not it ends up in the woods and natural resources. The money lost to flooding and huricanes wont happen anymore and you can put that money to accepting trash and keeping the woods clean.

As Hurricane Helene tore through Florida, it left one question: why had it targeted those who denied climate change and believed their leader was divinely chosen? Most victims were staunch supporters of a man who called himself the "chosen one." Yet, Helene’s wrath didn't strike climate activists; it ravaged those who dismissed science, trusting their faith would protect them from what they deemed liberal propaganda. In the wreckage, a bitter irony emerged: Was this truly God's will, or a judgment on their own blindness? Had they aligned with a false prophet, elevating a man to divine status while ignoring their duty to care for creation? Their unwavering support for a man who claimed God’s favor now seemed like blasphemy. Perhaps, this storm was a divine reckoning-not for the world's sins, but for theirs. The lesson? Stewardship over creation, not denial; humility, not hubris. Helene wasn’t just a storm-it was a mirror, reflecting the consequences of their denial. And as the floodwaters receded, the message remained clear: nature's power is divine, and denial will not shield them from the storms to come.
