A better view is that every carry gun is a compromise. I choose a j frame because I can carry it every day in any thing from wranglers to a dress suite. Would more rounds be better? Yes only if it doesn't compromise my ability to carry always.

I kinda get it. But sometimes trouble comes to your little paradise. Fact it 1 shot stops are rare and quite often criminals travel in packs. I'm happy with my 5 shot snubby most days but I'm aware of its limitations and when I go to town I grab something with more capacity.

My S&W 642 revolver is my only handgun to malfunction to the point of inoperability out of over half a dozen pistols and revolvers. The main spring was binding and keeping the DAO (hammerless) action from working. I like to mention that to revolver fanboys. I still carry that revolver often (after restoring it to proper working condition of course).

And you just defeated your whole entire comment by admitting as long as the cylinder never freezes. And if it does, then that gun just now became a paper weight. At least with a semi auto you can easily clear it and get it up and running. Now the pros to a revolver would be the fact you can push the barrel into someone and not worry about anything going out of battery. And for some people they can be just as easy as operating a semi automatic.

I am an old fart. I like all kinds of guns. I shoot all types of guns, not just handguns. I like making my own ammo and that helps me get the best accuracy I can from my guns. I like carrying a Smith and Wesson J-frame 38spl. It works, every time. I have repaired revolvers that "locked up". There are only a few things that make that happen. (1) Bad reloads. Either they were loaded too hot and the load forced the primers to come out or the brass was bulging near the primer end of the case and was not properly resized and this kept the cartridge from seating all the way into the cylinder which cause the gun to bind when the cylinder rotated. (2) Incorrect cleaning and lubrication. Too much oil in the wrong places left there over time turns to sludge and can make a revolver not work. Seen it and fixed it countless times. (3) Gun abuse. The TV cop shows where the guy checks his revolver and flicks the cylinder closed. That will, over time, ruin a revolver. (4) Timing issues. As the hammer goes back and the cylinder rotates, there are little parts inside the revolver that must move exactly right and on time or the gun will not function properly. When this problem comes around it is never quick. It happens over time and eventually the gun fails to work. In rare times, internal springs / parts can break. Fixed a bunch of these. This kind of repair work comes from reasons 1 through 3 I already mentioned. My point is, properly maintained and not abused, a revolver is rock solid. Treated like shit, it will fail at some point. Same for any other gun as well.

I have similar views although I would choose one of the 6 shot versions available like Taurus 856 or Colt D frame and clones or even one of the 8 shot .22 magnums. Most likely scenarios being very close range and even contact range I prefer not to have to worry about limp wristing or getting pushed out of battery due to contact. Ideally I would also carry something like a Bersa Thunder plus or CZ83 as backup for the extremely unlikely need for prolonged fire fight. For home of course I would like to have access to a rifle with moderate loads.

It has been my experience that, Guns fail. Guns are machines, often simple, I grant you, but machines none the less. Any gun can and will fail. It is all a matter of time. Might be today, tomorrow, or two hundred years from now... Eventually any and all mechanical things fail. So my advice? Carry what you like, and what you shoot best. DA revolver, Glock, CZ75, Derringer, 1911, Colt SAA or a Flintlock pistol... If you shoot it, and you like it, carry it. ^.-.^

I live in a very hot/humid area where more than a short sleeve shirt or tee shirt is rarely needed so the AA revolver is very convenient. However it's only chambered in 22 LR or 22 Mag. Revolvers are great. Don't kid yourself about some magical superior reliability. the only reason revolvers have an appearance of better reliability is because people don't shoot them as much. The more you fire a gun = larger sample size = greater chance you will have noticeable failure. When a modern pistol stops you just clear and reload it, when a revolver stops it's often out of the fight. They're man made tools.

Yes there are more people taking classes. New gun ranges are being built. But what about: Ranges fees, can you afford them? Is there a range near your home? 30 minute drive or 1 hour drive? The range you go to is it for hand guns only? Most ranges can't handle rifle caliber weapons. Or a 12 gage shotgun. Do you have the $$$ for monthly ammo? You are married with kids. Do you have the time??? Do you live in a city (no range) or the country?

I carry a single stack 9mm most days. How ever if I didnt live in Cali I'd have a double stack 9mm with 15 round capacity and several spares. " Five shots should be enough and if it's not you shouldn't go there"...... Well, you are probably right in the 90 percent of the self defense situations those five or six rounds should be enough.... however the problem is the remaining 10 percent of the situations when it happens what shouldn't happen, life has shown us that things that shouldn't happen can and will actually happen and your statement that in that case "you shouldn't go there" well that's not your choice because when you or someone else is attacked you have no choice, you either defend yourself or risk losing your life or be injured for life, I believe that anyone with a reasonable mind if they have a way out without the necessity of a shootout they will choose the safest way to escape an attack but unfortunately sometimes there is no way out and I do believe that you have the right to reduce the risk of losing your life or be injured as much as you can. So I do believe that having more rounds on one go without having to reload is the better option. However I do agree that a revolver has it's advantages (not jaming) as you said, so considering all of that I believe that everyone should decide for themselves regarding their self defense weapon of choice!

@Baldspot Civilian self defense is a different mission. We do not need to stop/apprehend a perp at distance. In the LE situation the bad guy is motivated as he knows that he can not just flee as they will follow. If we get the attacker to flee we have essentially succeeded and they know this. We need to incapacitate or discourage a close range threat where LE needs to apprehend at various ranges.
@Cdubp01
@Cdubp01 2 жыл бұрын
@@mkshffr4936 Then what say you to active shooter scenarios? Shooter with a long gun and perhaps even plates? Walks in while you’re in a movie theater, or church etc? Still want to bet those 5 shots of 38 +p oughta be enough? I get it that those type of scenarios are exceedingly rare, but so is any scenario where we as citizens, have to draw our firearms in defense. We train for the worst case, so why would a person want to intentionally limit their capacity to defend themselves with the mindset of “if you need more than 5 shots, you shouldn’t be there”. I don’t mean this to come off snarky, but it’s the same argument anti gunners make about ARs.
@mkshffr4936
@mkshffr4936 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cdubp01 You bring up some interesting points. As a preface let me point out that I didn't use the "you shouldn't be there" argument so let's set that aside. As to a rifleman with body armor I wouldn't want to go up against that with any handgun (especially by myself). There will always be some scenario where one is outgunned. It is always a case of individual risk analysis. My point in setting forth the mission difference was that the particular mission of LE and military puts a greater emphasis on capacity and to some extent power than the civilian case. Even in the active shooter scenario my mission would be to break contact as soon as possible where the LE would need to go in and neutralize the threat. Of course if the perp is wearing plates his Glock isn't going to cut it either. You say you don't know why one would intentionally limit their capacity. I think you are missing the point here. Revolver users do not intentionally limit capacity. Any limitation is a side effect of other priorities. So while I have carried a 5 shot my next carry revolver will be of higher capacity. 6 shots of center fire are quite doable in pocket revolvers and up to 8 in larger but still concealable frames. However for my circumstances the advantages of the revolver especially for use at contact ranges (much more likely than engaging a sniper in my case) are more compelling. Ideally I would love to have a high'ish capacity auto as a backup but not only does one need the money but as a married man I can't just set spending priorities all by myself.
@Cdubp01

@@mkshffr4936 Yes, no-I didn’t mean to imply you said that, the man in the video did in reference to not needing more than 5 shots. I’m sorry I implicated you in that point. I agree, going head to head with someone so disparagingly equipped is not the ideal scenario. There are few examples in which I would “choose” not to break contact such as yourself. But as we know-we don’t set the time and place, so that “choice” isn’t always ours. Some encounters are so egregious that breaking contact would be a moral hardship, ie school shootings. A Glock more than likely will not cut it, but I would argue it offers more opportunity. At the very least, the more time a shooter is involved engaging a Good Samaritan in a gun fight, the more time elapses for potential victims to escape, even if that’s at the demise of said Good Samaritan; I say that’s a win. Now grant you, I’m saying that as a single man with no children, everyone’s priorities are different. I hold no judgement on the choice to flee. I can not say that I would have the intestinal fortitude to shoot it out, never really know until you know. My comment on choosing to limit yourself is in relation to the choice of a wheel gun compared to auto guns of similar size for carry. I will grant you, contact interference is a solid argument; something I can’t really argue in defense of auto guns aside from the 1911, and I’m not an advocate of carrying that platform. All in all you make good points, and I appreciate the civility of your reply. We all do better to learn from each others experience and wisdom. Cheers to you and I hope the wifey lets you trade in some brownie points for that auto one day 😉

One unsung advantage of revolvers is the fact they do not need to eject cases when they're discharged. If you have to fire a gun lets say, in your car, it would be beneficial not to have a hot piece of brass whizzing into a delicate surface (a touch screen for example).

True, but is far less likely than a failure to feed, failure to extract, limp wristing induced failure, double feed, or magazine failure. Far more chances to have a problem occur with a pistol due to moving parts and action design. The only cause for such a catastrophic revolver failure is a bullet that pulled out from the case due to an improper roll crimp on said bullet, stoping the cylinder from rotating. And yes I shoot them all, am an ex military combat arms soldier, and a certified firearms instructor.

Both of those carry options require too many steps. No thanks. Forget cocking the hammer. Let's talk about the fact that the holster is coming out with the firearm.

No it doesn't. The holsters stay put in your pocket, and only the gun comes out. Now returning the gun. It is a good idea to remove the holster first, then slude the gun in before placing it back in your pocket.

If you have the choice to protect your life with double the capacity and same size frame that a revolver like this gives you, why wouldn't you? Also takes a lot more practice & skill to shoot accurately with a revolver than it does with a semi automatic as well. Had a 637, hated it and when it came time to sell it could not give that gun away. I own 1 revolver now just for leisure shooting, a 686. Love it and fun to shoot, but I personally would never choose a revolver as an EDC over a semi automatic.

Oh your friend wants as many shots as possible? The issue with that is who will be serving jury duty and who is your District Attorney? Are they an ally? The best thing about a revolver or even just those mouse guns are that they are Old School. That's a perception. Like the color pink. Its not a girl's color. Its a man's color. But thats a story for another day. Perception can be molded. What does the soccer mom on the jury think? Probably watched Bonanza a bunch or Little House on the Prairie as a child. A pink j Frame revolver can have a positive effect in perception. Unless any type of defense is seen as criminal. Still a cute pink pistol has its advantages.

Liked everything but the “i cock it if I can”, that’s not a great thing to do in a self defense shooting, it can be used against you in court for one. Id only need to cock the hammer if I was trying to take a long precision shot and in that case I probably shouldn’t be shooting someone that far anyways. I have and carry a S&W 642 and the same NAA revolver. Good stuff! 👍🏻

Nah. Real fudds don't even have CCW permits (remember, their guns are just for hunting those wascally wabbits), or if they do, they almost never carry (unless they are going someplace "dangerous"). This guy is just more conservative in what he carries for personal protection. Personally, I think the NAA mini is a poor choice compared to a pocket 380, but his S&W 638 snubby is a fine choice. While I prefer semi-autos with a higher capacity, the reality is that his little 5 shot .38 will solve 99.9%+ of the problems he may encounter that require a gun. Remember that in the VAST majority of times when a gun is used to defend one's self merely displaying the weapon to the criminal stops the threat 97-99% of the time. For those instances in which shooting is necessary, the vast majority are solved in 3 rounds or less (see Tom Givens rule of 3: 3 round at 3 yards in 3 seconds). The instances when more than 5 rounds are needed (even when dealing with multiple attackers) are few and far between.
