Have fun and experiment in your garden by putting on your lab coat and trying out some hybridization! Better yet, if you have issues like powdery mildew or SVB, try planting varieties that have been bred for resistance for the ultimate garden. Have any hybridization tips? Drop it down below!

Gardening is a never ending battle in Texas, but yes you're right using hybrids and even saving seeds from what grew well the previous year helps to create a hardy & more successful garden.

Crazy to say this but I miss gardening in Texas. Living in the Colorado mountains now and having such a short growing season is killing me. We have snow in late May. My Texas garden had such a high yield I used to take bags of fruits and vegetables to my work to let people take for free. ❤

I actually had something like this happen accidentally with some kale and collard greens that i was growing a couple of years ago. I planted some Georgia southern collards right next to some Purple Moon curly kale, i let them grow all throughout the winter and then in spring i let it all bolt so that the pollinators could have a little treat. So i was just like "Eh, i'll just go ahead collect some of those collard seeds while i'm at it, too". When i planted those i ended up with collard greens that had the huge dinner plate size leaves like what is typical of collard greens, but they had these frilled edges and the leaf stems were purple, which im guessing came from crossing with the kale that i had growing next to it the previous year. I've just been calling them curly collards, hah!

Our taste receptors are great at detecting poisons! Poisoning from green potatoes is similar to toxic squash poisoning where most instances of poisonings are in situations where people are just eating what they are served and don’t have much privilege to reject it. Examples include orphanages (famous case where children got sick from green potatoes) prisons and the military where people are served slop/rations that doesn’t taste good to begin with and they just scarf it down to get it over with.

I'm doing some reverse hybridising this summer (Australia). I saved some seeds from a hybrid pepper plant and the seedlings from them are thriving compared to my other ones! Hopefully they don't taste awful and I can continue saving seeds from them once again, we'll see!

I super want to try this but i dont have a ton of free space for experiments sadly lol. Im curious how to cross pollinate snap dragons, you just take 2 different colors/varieties and cross those then? Or are you crossing a snap dragon with something else? Thanks!
@meggrowsplants
@meggrowsplants Күн бұрын
Yes, usually snapdragons kind of freely cross in my garden but if you want to be more intentional about it, you’ll have to hand pollinate them! And yes you’d want to cross two snapdragons together to try to create a new color/variety 🧡 I’m sure there are videos about how to hand pollinate them. I’ll try to make one in the spring!

Is the bitter squash thing true for zucchini too? My zukes are not sweet not really bitter but weird
@meggrowsplants

Yes, but you’d know if it was toxic. It would be extremely bitter no doubt about it! It might taste weird for other environmental reasons like watering, etc!

Thanks for the inspiration. I have an area where I let volunteer tomatoes grow. I know what the original plants were. I think I have a very tasty cross of Bronze Torch and Sweet 100s. Too small and red to be Bronze Torch ad too big and pointy to be Sweet 100s. I may save those seeds. I've also had terrible tomatoes come out of this patch -- especially when Bronze Torch and Sungold get together -- both of those tomatoes tend to split and their progeny can be super splitters! Prayers for a quick recovery from your surgery.

There actually have been a few documented cases in my country of people dying after eating homegrown zucchini. They had used seeds from store bought zucchini and later died of cucurbitacin poisoning after eating the zucchini of those plants. The zucchini must’ve been incredibly bitter though, so I’m not sure how they were even eating that and thinking it would be fine 😔

I'd be a someone who eats it even though it's bitter. Everyone has different taste preferences/detections , and although it's not as common, some of us enjoy bitter foods. I'm more likely to make a scrunched up face when food is unexpectedly sweet than bitter foods. I personally rarely experience something as tasting "bitter" when many people complain about it being too bitter. An example of this is bolted herbs. I adore the punch of flavor from herbs after they have bolted. Some of my favorites (that I prefer after bolting) are several varieties of basil (I find they get spicier, and I do not detect a hint of bitter flavor), cilantro, & marjoram. Getting into bolted lettuce in the heat of summer is crossing the line of bitter for me. I can taste the bitter and I don't like it. An example of something I can detect is bitter and still enjoy is 2-hour steeped grapefruit skin with pith consumed as tea. I find it very refreshing. Difficult to describe, but I also find it has a "clean" mouthfeel (as though drinking it could remove any film from drinking a glass of oil.) I like your squash, btw.
