Thank you for your insight. You connected nearly all the water dots except how baptism os woven into it. Everyone seems to dodge this subject.. so controversial in christendom. We are buried with him in baptism and raised up to walk in newness of life… our sins forgiven.. acts 2:38 22:16 etc..

What is your justification for saying the Greek of John 3 is water of the spirit? "ek hudatos KAI pneumatos" is literally "out of water and spirit." I have never heard of any debate surrounding the translation of this rather simple statement, though people do attempt all sorts of strange interpretation, the translation is quite clear: ek (out of) hudatos (water) kai (and) pneumatos (spirit). There don't seem to be any constructions in the NT where this structure would yield: [noun1] OF [noun2].

Jesus certainly wasn't teaching water baptism here. Some hold that water is a metaphor for the Spirit!!!!! In my view, water IS another way to refer to the Spirit. This would justify Keener's interpretation because it is based on OT revelation where "the Holy Spirit is frequently depicted in the Old Testament as being poured out like water (cf. Proverbs 1:23; Joel 2:28-29; Zechariah 12:10). So to a Jewish teacher steeped in the language of the Old Testament, the idea of being “born of water and the Spirit” would evoke the idea of an outpouring of God’s Spirit - which is precisely what Jesus was saying." Also, Ezekiel 36:25-27. There the Lord is affirming the promise of the new covenant to Israel, and He says, I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. To borrow a precisely parallel New Testament expression, water and Spirit are best understood as a reference to “the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). Christ emphasized that spiritual rebirth is wholly a work of God, not the result of human effort: “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6)

@@SugoiEnglish1 Titus 3:5 is referring to water baptism. It says "lutron," which is a literal bath of water.

One cannot negate the 'spring of water' also: The Hagar consciousness 'do not let me look on the death of the child' is contained in the water and well in genesis: as in Jacob's gathering 'one flock of sheep' at the well. Follow 'wept', 'lift', 'look', 'raise', 'open' from John's gospel backward to the beginning for 'He' was in the beginning in Genesis and heals the rift in Adam and Eve, in Cain and Abel, in Abraham and Sarah, in Ishmael and Isaac, in Jacob and Israel....follow 'field': the fields are white and ready for harvest in midst of Samaritan mission, 'two angels in white'. Follow use of 'I am' versus 'am I' in the two books: first, 'am I my brothers keeper?'. Jesus as first born 'Son', 'only Son', the Samaritan woman's 'come, see' (the third use of 'Come and see' (in comma form)) is the reconciling first born Son for the break in first born expelled in Ishmael and Esau. Lazarus is the BD (the first to enter tomb in his raising), 'hand', 'feet' and 'face' for Jacob told Esau after first naming to Israel, 'seeing your face is like seeing the face of God'. Joseph represents God on second level and the feast of ch 43 in genesis where first and second born look at one another amazed (and with Joseph as God with Hebrew and Egyptians). This is the paradigm insert of final feast, where Mary anoints Jesus' feet with her hair and resultant fragrance (for Isaac mentioned that the disguised Jacob as Esau 'smelled as a fine field' and Jesus taught to wash one another's feet. Cana miracle 1 and 2: water to wine, Woman, steward...Cana 2 the officials son is raised, the use of said, said, believe and speak (Isaiah text where 'say' is re: Jacob, 'speak' to Israel) triggers back to Hagar's 'do not let me look upon the death of the child' and the angel of the Lord and God's hearing the voice of the lad....I am statements in g of John: the shepherd, second group, 'heed' matches Hagar and Ishmael and God taking 'heed' of her affliction.....Joseph as God, Benjamin as son of sorrow, born on way to Bethlehem, mother dies. The exchange of Joseph and Jacob-Israel and brothers Israel is prolific: 'why did you tell the man that there was another brother?', Jacob's life bound with Benjamin-Jesus.....
