Canadian Hardiness Zone 2B here! I know it's crazy but I started my tomatoes a couple weeks ago. I don't start all of them, just the ones I intend for pots, so they can be moved outside in early spring and back in when it's cold. I love having an early crop of tomatoes, so it's worth the effort to me. I've also started my onions, as well as some herbs and lettuce for indoor growing. I'm so impatient for spring this year I'm just gonna bring it inside. 😅

Zone 5b here in Montreal. Got my strawberries started 3 weeks ago and got close to 80% germination on a 128 cell flat so my towers are going to be full with berries :).Cold stratified them for a month (started in early December) some of my babies already have 1 full set of true leaves and on some the 2nd set is coming out. They are still tiny though got like 6 varieties : Fresca, most of them Elan, Toscana, Rainbow treasure, Delizzio, Milan and Ruby Ann. Also sowed my onions last weekend and they are germinating fine ! Starting my herbs, green onions and celery this weekend and Hot Peppers in a couple of weeks.

Poppies direct seeded on the snow if you have'nt already sewn them. I grow lovage and celery and they are different in the stock as the stock of lovage is hollow not solid like celery . They do both have a celery flavour but you definintly need to use way less of the lovage for that taste. I dig up my celery in the fall and transplant it into my cool geothermal greenhouse but it does need to be heated with our wood stove in our zone 3 climate. The celery doesn't do much until Feb. when the light level comes up.

I also started some sweet potatoes for slips around New Years, already have some slips popping up. Wanted to test germinate some saved luffa seeds, they all germinated so I stuck them in some paper pots, do not know how they will do inside for so long, guess I will find out. Started some chili peppers a few weeks ago, along with trying some carrots inside in grow bags and buckets. Have to start my petunias, marigold, chamomile and celery in the next week or so. This morning I started Shasta Daisy and Lemon Balm seeds, also I'll start Delphiniums, Snapdragons, Thyme, Summer Savory and Loveage. I agree about celery. Last year I started Utah 52 and one other, they ALL sprouted and grew 10"...then quit. They were woody and ugly tasting, so I'll not be wasting my time on them again. I'll be starting my 'outside garden' tomatoes end of March, any earlier and they grow huge and leggy and thin and it's a hot mess.

Ants actually farm aphids for the sweet “honey dew” the aphids excrete. You can hose down the plants that have aphids with the water house, also lady bugs will eat aphids. Ladybugs like to hide in umble flowers, so plant some dill or let carrot go to seed and encourage the lady bugs to find your garden. Who doesn’t like seeing lady bugs in the garden and knowing they are chewing down on aphids makes it all the more beautiful!

I am going to have to get back into Lovage. I was the only one in the family that liked using it; I found it much better than celery. I suppose what the problem was, was that it was too potent. Back when I was trying to make an impression on the cocktail scene, I made many shrubs, some of which included lovage. They were tasty enough that they could be served without alcohol. They were a good option at banquets for those that didn't drink. As I think of it, it was a wonderful way to preserve fruit juices. With proper bottling, they would last 6-8 weeks in a cold room or 6-8 months in the refrigerator.

I made the mistake of planting some tomato seeds in February. I found 2 packs and some loose seeds on a shelf in a spare room from 2014. My sister said I did not store them well so most would not germinate. She was wrong!! very wrong! I had over 300 starts in my house long before we could put them in the greenhouse here. I found homes for most so I started 60 Amish paste seeds and Tumbling Toms since I needed them for honey hubby's mom and because I like growing stuff like the herbs, I started last week.

Would you mind recommending some onion varieties that work well in northern climates? I’ve started a few varieties but I have ZERO luck with onions and this is my 4th year trying. I did from seed last year but started way too late so hopefully this is my onion year. Any tried and true varieties? I’m in Alberta zone 4 Thanks ❤

My last frost date just outside of Ottawa Canada in the first weekend in June. My zone is 5B. I have started thyme, rosemary, lavender, chamomile, hot and sweet peppers, tomatoes (not cherry varieties yet. They grow too fast), leeks, onions, eggplants, and loofa.

Newbie question... if I started a tray of seeds, but then (accidentally) let it dry it out, does that mean I should start over, or keep trying to keep it moist and hope they germinate soon?
