For some odd reason, samplers such as Ableton's own simpler and sampler, and many other hardware samplers can't seem to do what musicians really want, to be able to playback a sample immediately after recording it. To fill this gap, Novel Music, creator of the rad Polymath sequencer within the Seeds Collection has created "Catch" a max for live "instant sampler" capable of recording samples and mapping them in real time. This enables sampling musicians to rapidly remix and transform recorded audio into wild creations and really makes the act of sampling very engaging and fun.

Hey all, I made an incorrect statement at the beginning of this video making the claim that some other popular samplers don't feature some form of instant sampling when in fact a few of them actually do, so I removed the beginning of the video as many viewers don't read comments and could miss the correction. KZbin's video editor only allows basic trimming of videos alas. I tried to research this but as you know its financially impossible for a new dad to own every single sampler available and I value correct and factual information above all else and hold this channel to the highest level of integrity, hence the correction. I am human and can occasionally miss and make mistakes but I also strive to correct them as soon as they are discovered!

What a wonderful surprise! This is precisely what I have been hoping to have as Max for Live Device. After buying the Push 3, the standalone feature seemed almost underwhelming, considering you can't use external VST's. it seems the standalone feature has needed more creativity to it. This Catch device will change the game on what is possible there, instantly recording and mapping straight to the pads with any sound from any source. The MPE functionality is also a chef's kiss. I'm so excited to mess with all the creative ways to resample and do it live. You guys are innovative and exceptional. Absolutely worth the cost. This is amazing. I had an Ensoniq ASR-10 a while ago and I have been missing the ability to just quickly sample and play said sample chromatically. Now it’s super easy with Push 3 and Catch. Thanks!

I have a very crude version of a M4L device in my "M4L WIP" folder for years that I always wanted (especially for using with Push) but never finished... I'm so glad I won't have to think about finishing it ever again! Well, I can now forget about maybe one day making some Ca(t)sh 😋with it and delete it from my folder. This Catch looks so perfectly thought out and the Push implementation seems as great as it can be, I'll just go ahead and grab it. Once again, Novel Music did a wonderful job 🤘🏽

I was hoping I'd be able to play guitar straight into it and then be able to instantly play slices of the sample. I was imagining this: one instance inside a drum rack and it gets the midi from all the drum pads, each note corresponding with a chop of the sample. You trigger recording with a midi mappable button and can synced to global quantization or not, and then when you stop recording (fixed length or not) the sample is already chopped up on drum pads. Basically just like a combination of Ableton's looper and simpler's slicing mode but with instant input like Catch. The problem in my case is my current limit of 2 hands. My workaround will just be taking the input from my looper instead of the live guitar input. Record a loop, chop it into catch and then stop the original loop and play chops of it on catch. What's the cpu load look like with 16 instances of this running a drum rack, if I might ask? Thanks!

@@engeomusic Since Catch is a midi device, you could accomplish this with a dummy clip. Turn off Loop in the clip then automate the midi arming and recording of each sample slot in the dummy clip with a sequence of notes associated with the catch drum rack. Simply launch the dummy clip to record the guitar and hence repopulate the samples.

I've been looking for a way to chop live loops in real time, this could be the missing piece of the puzzle if you did some creative routing with the looper device. The only thing would be getting Catch to cut off the original looper when you started playing back the chops.

Catch doesn't seems to save some parameters when save as m4l preset, per example the default audio track i'm using when selecting 'Master' doesn't save as his when loading the device. Can someone help me ?

This is just a re-badged max integration of Koala Sampler. It does what catch does and then some - and its been around for some time.... (without having to launch a daw!), can use Ableton Link and can directly create drum racks.

How does it distinguish between a pad hit to record and a pad hit to play? Seems the pads are always armed but somehow it knows when to record and when to play.

“Midi arm” switches back off after one note off message so the next time you hit a pad (or play the note) it is in play mode.

Hello, I downloaded Catch, when I take Catch rack (seeds to stage), I configure the input but it only does it for the first "pad". Do I have to configure all the inputs separately or is there a way to do it automatically for the entire rack?
