We are pleased to talk with the public about our work and our chamber, as the media has often had confusing coverage. We thought this piece was one of the most sensitive pieces that has been done on silence and and it carries our message clearly.

I really want to be a guinea pig. I have a very high sense of hearing. And to be in such a place seems heavenly.

I'll take a video like this over an ad any day. Watched the whole thing even though I could've skipped it 5s.

Spend 5 minutes in that quiet room listening to every breath, gurgle, beat of your heart and blood coursing through your head, you'll go screaming for the exit. Whatever you're seeking, you won't find it in anachoic chamber.

Heh yeah, not to crap on the principle of the video but those chambers drive one insane, not calm....

While I haven't been in that chamber, I have been in very silent environments for extended periods. Never went 'screaming for the exit.' Yes, for some, being in total silence is initially unnerving. For those who like silence, as I do, the experience can be both calming and rejuvenating. As a meditator, I look forward to silent environments. The more silent, the better. Perhaps Dr. Orfield or his colleagues can comment on the research of whether exposure to deep silence, whether for short or extended periods, has any deleterious effects.

@@charlesscott7748 Rooms at negative dB have supposedly caused people, spending extended periods of time in them, to become uncomfortable with the sounds of their own physiology. I don't know of any physical negative effects.

What the good professor fails to mention is that staying in such an environment for as little as five minutes can induce a permanent case of tinnitus. A ringing, or buzzing noise created by the brain itself in the absence of any actual sounds at all. We aren't made for total silence. When exposed to it, our brains create their own sounds in the absence of those provided by the natural world. Anechoic chambers are far from a natural phenomenon, and while it may seem totally peaceful, the brain makes up for the lack of outside stimulus to our ears by creating its own.
