Great anchor freeing explanation, thank you. Didnt know how to do it before. Also, a nice approach for sailing is just go where the wind goes in order to enjoy. Nice spirit and good video atmosphere

aaah I love it when we managed to make people laugh! Very good to hear 😄haha yes I know that feeling when being in a restaurant.. it does kinda kill the buzz right! Although I try not to let it do that, would be too bad for the experience:) Happy we could share some of our knowledge, hopefully you will never need it 😉 cheers

A common practice for mooring in small marinas is to tie a rope to the very tip of the anchor (not the shank where the chain is but the other tip on the crown), which in Greece we call kleftis (thief) but I'm sure it has another name in english that I can't remember off the top of my head. It's great for anchoring in small crowded marinas like this and generally it doesn't tangle with the anchor chain if the depth isn't too great. You have to bring your vessel over your anchor, which in some cases might be a bit tricky, and then you pull the anchor up by the rope. This pulls the anchor upside down and usually dislodges the flukes easily if they're stuck, and also makes any chains or lines caught in them to fall out of the anchor. I think the biggest benefit with this method is that you don't need the person in the other vessel to do anything, which is great in case there's no one in it.

True :) we call this an anchor trip line. We use a floating line with a very small buoy (and write “don’t tie up!! Trip buoy!!” On it. It’s crazy what some boats tie up to. )

Another very nice video, good memories of last summer for me. Looking forward to seeing the crossing to Italy. We crossed to Otranto on one tack for 11 hours! Now just day sailing in Maui. 😊

Ooooh that sounds good! The wind was strong with us, but it was way too much west.. it kept turning more and more in the wrong direction 😅. Day sailing in Maui sounds incredible though. I could definitely think of worse places to go for a day sail! One day we hopefully make it there too. If you're still there then, let us know ;)

Agreed, very nice job describing your anchor situation! We've never had to do that style of mooring here in the US, so we've never dealt with that problem. Speaking of boat repairs, we had some great sailing today, and got back to the dock with several new broken things to fix! :( It is always something, isn't it? By the way, we will probably never get to sail in Greece, but I just ordered a copy of that book!
@seethelittlethings5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dean! Mooring like that is actually quite nice. Since we haven't really gone side on ever, I feel super uncomfortable doing that 😂 The Med way I can do now pretty good, even with more winds, but the side one way.. I let Alex do it when we have to, I still need some practice there.. I'm sorry to hear things broke again! Would be nice if the boat decided to just stay the way it is for a few months in a row hehe, would make life easier (but maybe also a bit more boring 😁). Hope you get it fixed easily then :). Now you got the book btw, you are going to have to sail Greece some day. I bought a travel book for Cuba once, still haven't been, but knowing it's there, keeps the goal in mind ;)

Having skippered charter yachts throughout the Greek Islands for over 20 years, I have encountered many crossed anchor chains, my solution is similar to yours except I have an anchor trip which holds other yachts chain up while you retrieve your anchor, same result only done in only a few minutes, I had people comment “what did he just do” Regards Alan Inglis Kiwi Skipper.
@seethelittlethings5 жыл бұрын
Nice! We saw that piece of equipment a few times. If everything went according to plan we often just lifted the anchor all the way. As soon as we pulled up into the bow roller the anchor was horizontal enough for the other chain to slide right off

I once crossed hard in Aegina and the owner of the other boat was not there... was not easy but good experience! Nice sailing. Ithaca is your lost most place :)
@seethelittlethings5 жыл бұрын
Aaaah yeah in Aegina we've seen some crazy situations.. always too bad when the owners not there. Also cause it feels not too good leaving a boat behind that might not have an anchor that's set well anymore.. But sometimes you have now choice! Ithaca is amazing :) :)

See the little things, when sailing you actually see that (moves slowly compared to a car or even 8 to 5 jobs) You have time to admire the view. Most of the time disconnected (no cell service) so you are left to let your mind deift with the current.
@seethelittlethings5 жыл бұрын
It is nice to have time to admire the view :) In Greece you basically always have cell service though 😂theres always an island in sight with some tower on it hehe. cheers
