This is definitely one of my favorite stories about Thor. Even though he was among the strongest of the Norse gods, Thor was bested in his trails due to trickery, showing that there are some forces that even the god of thunder can't overcome.

Just a few fun fact and/or corrections. 1. Alle the competitors have names, and the names are foreshadowing what they are before the jætte (Jotunn) tells Thor, Loki and Tjalfe. Loki is eating against Lue which is another word for fire. Tjalfe is competing against Hu, which is to remember or getting an idea. Thor is wrestling against Ælde which means to get older. 2. Thor gets three tries to empty the horn connected to the sea. And it is mentioned that when they see the sea it is extremely low tide. 3. The cat is not only heavy, but as Thor tries to lift it it gets longer and longer, but at some point to cannot stretch itself any more, and when it lift its one pore the Jotunn stop the competition and declare that Thor lost and wasn't getting anywhere, when in reality he was afraid that Thor actually would lift the cat. 4. Thor almost died in that wrestling match. Ælde (the old woman) was draining him for life. I cannot remember how he survived. 5. Jotunn or jætter and all their other names, has nothing to do with giants nor ice. They are as different as the Asir, some are giants, some are smal, some have something to do with the mountains and some the sea. For example the chief Jotunn (udgårs Loke) in this story, as mentioned, shows himself as a giant, but also as normal sized or as big as Thor. He is just extremely adept at magic. So I don't understand why in english they have become ice giants?

5. because the first giant is Imir and he is born from ice, if I understand mythology correctly there 3 types - ice, stone or mountain and fire giants 1. Thats interesting cus I know them as Logi, Huge and Eda and the king is Utgard Loki, so can you tell me which one is correct

@@СтефаноНачев The creation myth of aser (Asir) and jætter (Jotunn) that i know of is as follows. In the beginning there was the primordial mist from which Ymir, the cow Audhumbla and a mineral stone sprang from. Ymir drank the milk of the cow, The cow consumed the stone. As the cow was consuming the stone three bodies, which was in the stone, was freed and from the stone sprang Odin, Vile and Ve the first Asir. They looked at Ymir in disgust as since Ymir's creation filth had gathered in the armpits and crouch. The filth came to life and was the first Jotunn. Odin and his brothers killed Ymir, and used his blood the drown the Jotunn, but they didn't succeed in eradicating all of them. They then began to create the world out of the dead body of Ymir with his flowing blood as the sea.

@@СтефаноНачев so from the creation myth i know of ice isn't special to the Jotunn. They are just like the Asir or Vaner just another people and society.

@@СтефаноНачев Where are you from? I would love to know if the names of the competitors have any meaning in your language? It would make sense that the names change with the language to reflect the deceit. As for the chieftain, I know him under the name, Udgårds Loke, which i guess is the same as the name you know just spelled a little different.

Fun fact:in the movie Valhalla Thor and Loki and their servants challenged the Jotuns so they return them Quark. Quark is the Jotun boy that giants gave Loki after he lost,Quark befriended with Thjalfi and Roskva because they had so much in common. After Thor and the gang lost, Loki used his illusions to trick the jotuns leaving Quark with the jotuns. Roskva then goes to the treehouse and finds Quark inside, having run away from Utgard. The two friends are happily reunited.

The story of Quark is a hilarious take on the Nordic mytologi and is actually not to far off. I read that the authors of the books Valhalla and the Quark series actually did a lot of research to depict the stories of the mythology as faithful as possible.

I have watched this movie. Thor made a deal with the Jotuns that if he or his friends win just one competition, the Jotuns keep Quark. When Utgard-Loki told Roskva to try, she lied about not being good at anything. On the contrary, Thjalfi was not a friend, but an @$$hole to Quark! He only cared if Thor would win and, even worse, he competed against the Jotuns in the running race (which means, against Quark).

0:39 Sorry, but you're wrong. Loki is not the son of 'the glorious giant' Laufey. His father, Fárbauti, is Jotunn (ice giant). His mother, Laufey, was actually Aesir just like Odin and Thor. Since it was a shame to him his father was of significantly lower statue than his mother he used the name Laufeyson after his mother instead of the more accurate Fárbautison.

Why is it that jætter (Jotunn) in English had become ice giants? There is nothing in the mythology that attributes them with ice.

@@esbenbuurlkke5775 Indeed. But on the other hand according to the Edda's some are actual giants like Utgardr-Loki in this saga. And Ymir, the primodrial Jotunn, was enormous. So big his body was used to create our world.
@esbenbuurlkke5775
@esbenbuurlkke5775 Жыл бұрын
@@elricthebald You a right that there is giants as i wrote in my other comment there is giants who happens to be Jotunn. Like Ymir from which the world was built, and the sved and filth ind his armpit became the other jotunn. But there is big and small jotunn so it is not a specific trait. In the case of Udgårds Loke, he was a giant because of his magic, he was in his natural form not much bigger than Thor. But my main question is why os their main attribute ice? I could understand if they were translated to giants but it seems that in the english language they are bound to ice and are blue and has a cold aura. Why is that?

In the Edda, Thor is said to have lifted Jormungandr up to heaven. While the duel with Elli, Utgardr-Loki admitted that he was admired, because if it is true that Thor was not able to beat her, in turn the god of thunder was able to not get overwhelmed except for the knee, proving to be so powerful that it can also resist the passage of time.
