Overnight Kayak Camping on an Island: Fishing from the Beach

In this video, my buddy Sergio and I decided to go kayak camping on a spoil island near the Dunedin Causeway, just north of Tampa Bay, Florida. We packed everything we needed onto our kayaks and launched from the Causeway toward Horseshoe Island. We explored the island, set up at an amazing campsite, and I went fishing from the beach with hopes of catching something to eat.

Nice video Brent. Been waiting on that type of video for awhile now. Those spoil islands are a blast to camp on. Been doing it for years. I always bring extra trash bags with me to clean up all trash, even from past campers, and leave it spotless.

I have been kayaking out to those islands a lot lately since Covid closed down Honeymoon Island. Usually spend every Sat night fishing Hurricane Pass, but those Spoils have been a nice change and been talking about camping there since we usually don't leave until like 1am. Good stuff!

Fun little trip to break up the work week. About your only hope to catch dinner that you could keep around there was maybe a sheephead (mangrove crabs?). Unless you wanted to try blackened lady fish or jack. Ha! Pahtuuuueee--- YUK!

I park right before the first bridge on the right or left. Usually where the walkers park. We park two cars and camp out on the islands. You can go to the police station and get a 30 day overnight pass

Hey Brent, another awesome vid! Me, my fam & our boat are headed to Old Tampa Bay Mon-Thurs... Our first time on the water over there & we are gonna visit & fish Picnic Island. Can you recommend any other spots & baits nearby that my 6yo & 4yo boys might catch a fish they'll never forget? Thanks for any advice and keep the great content coming!

Picnic Island is a good place, but you could also try across the bay at Weedon Island. Basically anywhere there's grass flats and mangroves from Weedon up to Philippe Park you'll find Speckled Trout, Redfish, and Snook. I know there are some good oyster bars just north of the Courtney Campbell by Safety Harbor that hold fish on High Tide, but it does get shallow around there so be careful. I always recommend using live shrimp if you want the closest thing to a guarantee, especially for kids. Put it under a bobber so it's around a foot off the bottom. You'll get a lot of by-catch, like Pinfish, Ladyfish, and Jacks, but it's good for kids to have constant action out there to keep them entertained. Hopefully this helps, good luck!
