So far, I commend you for doing a great job, that by your own personal style of video journalism-sans-frills you are able to feature places less traveled by tourists and unique explorations that have altogether pinched a growing interest among avid travel aficionados, hence creating a substantial number of followers. Allow me, however, to refine some data as mentioned in your script, maybe for lack of deeper rooting to archives and historical facts and an in-depth research which I figure is vital to any form of fact-based journalistic work. First, your feature episode centered on the “baluarte” of the Arteche Park, popularly known to Zumarraganhons as “Santa Barbara” over the years. From your title alone, “The STRANGE ISLAND OF ZUMARRAGA in the PHILIPPINES” you were already hinting to project the historic landmark as “creepy.” I don’t contest that your visit elicited that kind of feeling but lest that this remark will influence an unpleasant public impression, the Baluarte has a long history to tell, more than a being a potential horror setting. Second, Zumarraga was never under Catbalogan as a civil government; it was an independent pueblo. Here is an excerpt from an article by local historian Charo Cabardo. “…….By early 19th century, the residents of Buad, already a pueblo, had built a baluarte. An 1814 Report by the Samar Governor noted that Buad was fortified by two cannons, two grams of polvora and six balas de fierro. Ruins of this baluarte located on a promontory facing Maqueda bay still exist and is now part of the town’s tourist attraction that also includes the Arteche Park. Already established as a pueblo, Buad remained under the spiritual care of the Catbalogan parish due to the shortage of missionaries. Buad was served by priests from Catbalogan. From 1843 to 1864, Fr. Martin Ollala de Yepes and Fr. Antonio Figueroa, parish priests of Catbalogan (from 1843 to 1864) also served Zumarraga. In 1845, Fr. Ollala constructed the church of wood dedicated to San Antonio de Padua……” From its original, nature-tempered state, the 5-cluster ruins of the “baluarte” underwent restoration in 2004 during the term of Ex-Mayor Neliptha Figueroa under the auspices of the Department of Tourism and National Historical Institute, which provided the paved stairways via 2 passages: the Zumarraga Central Elementary School and the Arteche Park’s belfry section; a viewing deck with a 180-degree elevated view of Samar mainland and Daram; and a gazebo near the viewing deck. Since its restoration, however, the string of strong typhoons that followed virtually caused the place to dilapidate now to its present form. The present LGU is currently addressing this issue and we will try all efforts possible to make this important historical landmark in Samar back as a picture/video-perfect heritage site for tourists and visitors alike. Wow a nice hike in Zummaraga Island Samar up on a hill there’s a look out overlooking the ocean with lots of small Islands ; you have to go up the hill and cross to another part of The opposite place , wow so amazingly a beautiful place , thank you Seftv for bringing us to different beautiful places in the Philippines

Thanks again SEFTV for sharing , actually I live in the nearby island and we usually passes by Zumarraga on our way to Tacloban or to Catbalogan via pump boat , I’m always amazed those beautiful scenery of those green mountains along our way before entering the San Juanico strait, you’re right it’s really a breat taking. I appreciate now more than before that I don’t live there anymore , but planning to visit someday. I still miss my beautiful home town. God bless.
