This is first game that amazed me, how Genesis can generate such good sounding music.

Am I the only one who thinks the genesis version is heavily superior to the arcade versions soundtrack? Ever listen to the genesis version of first boss theme then the arcades? Genesis version actually sounds like the first boss stands a chance against you. Not to mention menacing. R.I.P data east....

Amazing upload; one of my all-time favourite Genesis OSTs! Out of curiosity, I've noticed that you've switched to recording theses Genesis OSTs to a Model 2 w/ a MegaAmp mod from a model 1 VA3. I myself have a Model 1 HDG VA3, and I love how it sounds. I'd be really interested if you think that a MegaAmp+ Model 2 sounds better than the aforementioned Model 1 HDG, and your reason behind it? Would it be worth the switch for my setup? Perhaps would you consider doing a video demoing the sound difference between the Model 1 VA3 and the MegaAmp MNodel 2? Thanks for the killer uploads; keep it up!
@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL9 жыл бұрын
3aleksandar3 My VA3 gave up the ghost unfortunately, it died when I tried to do a RAM replacement in hopes of improving stability. It continued to exhibit strange behavior even after the replacement so I suspect I misdiagnosed it. It eventually got much worse and won't generally boot games. I do still have its board around and plan on salvaging some parts from it to build a different YM2612-based sound board/amplifier in the future. You are right though, the VA3 sounds excellent, especially after replacing the electrolytic capacitors, so take good care of yours. I have another VA6, non-HDG, TMSS that also sounds alright, I did one recording with it (Rocket Knight Adventures) but decided to take a try at building the MegaAmp and I think it sounds a hair better than the VA6, so it's the console of choice for recording at the moment for me. Lately I have been using a second MegaAmp I built a little more cleanly (no wires) and have been using that one. I would not say in general that it sounds better than an HDG Model 1, just different. From a more academic point of view, the MegaAmp is probably "better"--a TL072 is a much better amplifier specs-wise than an LM358, or the Sony headphone amp--but obviously sound is a subjective thing. There are trade-offs. The model 1 is different depending on how you hook it up. The mono audio out of the A/V jack isn't actually that great as it uses 1 channel of a 2 channel LM358 (they cheaped out/got clever and used the 2nd channel as part of the reset circuit, which is probably not exactly optimal for audio). It sounds pretty flat and of course isn't stereo. The headphone jack can sound a little better, the amp distorts in a pleasant way that rounds the bottom end of the sound off nicely, and you get stereo. The way mine was hooked up was the popular stereo mod where you just solder two wires to where the audio comes into the headphone amp. This produces clean stereo but it's really quiet and might not have the right output levels when you take into account that an amplifier is nonlinear. So you have to turn your TV up, or use another amplifier (which will color the sound), or in the case of my recordings, record at a high bit depth and then normalize digitally and hope that it comes out alright. I figured of the three options there, that was the best choice. There is a 4th option and that is getting another LM358 compatible op-amp and recreating the model 1's sound circuitry x2 and feeding stereo into that. A few people have done that and the result is even though it's stereo and loud, it still isn't the best possible sound, though it might be the most "correct" or "factory" stereo mod if you are a purist. Advantages of the MegaAmp setup mainly are that it's loud, clear stereo with minimal distortion without a lot of fuss. Disadvantage, at least with my particular Model 2s, is various low level EM noises creeping in from the VDP. I have done my best to build it into my machine in such a way it's not too audible by keeping connections very short (I've managed -72 or so dB) but it's still there and I'll have to live with it. It can be minimized when I make recordings because usually recording from a game's sound test doesn't generate as much noise as it would in-game, since the VDP isn't doing any heavy lifting or DMA. For gaming it's not really a problem/not noticeable on my TV and it's still less noise than the YM2612 generates in ladder distortion. So I can live with it. A more neutral factor is the ASIC YM3438 vs the discrete YM2612, they sound different from each other especially in some edge cases due to differences either in internal resolution or DAC output (not entirely sure which it is). Again, that's a personal preference thing. For what it's worth I plan on building a small board with a discrete YM2612 and SN76489 and a recreation of the model 1's amplifier with a higher quality amp/some subbed components ala MegaAmp and wiring it into another Model 2 and with any luck making that the "definitive" machine I use for recordings. If it helps you make a choice, the MegaAmp in my recordings is the one with the low-pass filter mimicking a Model 1; I haven't tried the un-filtered one. I hope I've been helpful but at the end of it all you'll just have to trust your ears to tell you what you like.
@3aleksandar39 жыл бұрын
DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL Wow, thank you for the exceptionally detailed answer! That's unfortunate about your Model 1 VA3; mine is still going strong thankfully, and the caps are still in remarkable shape considering the late 80's manufacturing date! I actually downloaded an audio demo pack from Sega 16 comparing various tracks played through a stock Model 1 VA3, and a MegaAmp installed and set to a Discrete YM3438 - Filtered. I definitely take your point after listening to them that you can't qualitatively state that one is "better" than the other, but rather different. I must say, that while I think the MegaAmp is a killer development for those with poor model 2 sound, for my ears, I'm still loving my Model 1 VA3 sound; although your proposed "definitive machine" definitely sounds appealing as an upgrade. A few quick requests if I may; if you could give the same treatment to the Thunderforce series, M.U.S.H.A, and Ghostbusters, that would be much appreciated! Thanks again for all of the uploads, it certainly is a great resource on KZbin for people to hear how great the Genesis sounds, especially amid the glut of terrible uploads on this site!

Also, any plans on uploading Streets of Rage 3's soundtrack? I still think that is one of the hardest OST to get right by an emulator. And KZbin doesn't seem to have any videos of real hardware music.
@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL9 жыл бұрын
***** It will get uploaded at some point in the future. This and the last couple of uploads have been easy ones for me to put up while I work on getting music from other games that are less trivial to record. SoR3 is one of those. It'll come :)
@greenhillmaniac9 жыл бұрын
DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL Cool. One of the examples of emulation not getting the music quite right is Cycle 1 (Round 1-2). Every video I listen of this track has slightly different sounding cymbals. You notice right at the beginning.
@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's very dependent on the FM emulation being run at the right frequency, which most emulators don't do. Even if this is accounted for (Genesis Plus GX) it tends not to sound quite right because a real Genesis doesn't have a simple 60% LPF or no filter at all. It's a great example of emulation being 99% of the way there but the last mile being the hardest to achieve. The problem is of course when less accurate emulators of the past helped contribute to the perception that SoR3 and a handful of other Genesis games sounded awful.
