Interesting that the background pads in "Mass of Cloud" have definite pitch (but not the same key as the rest of the music) in this rendition, whereas in other versions they're whooshes of white noise. It's up there. But Sonic 3 (the full sonic 3, so including "and knuckles" as well as it was originally intended) still has the best soundtrack of any video game. Michael Jackson at his songwriting peak. Love it. One of the only video game soundtracks I can listen to just as music, you know Chrono Trigger is the closest in quality to sonic 3 and some days depending on my mood I think chrono trigger is number 1. Chrono trigger makes me cry But yeah that ain't a mega drive game it's a snes game. For mega drive, yeah sonic 3 is unrivalled I think. From a songwriting perspective it's masterful work. And from a sound engineering perspective it's perhaps even MORE impressive. How the hell did they get a mega drive to produce THOSE sounds!? And actually the Sonic 3D Blast/Flickies Island soundtrack is incredible too. The Rust Ruins song from that game is an absolutely incredible piece of music. I'm trying to cover it with real instruments and add a vocal melody and lyrics to it. That bass line is insane And of course anything Tim Follin wrote for games is up there. The single best one level song for a video game, not the whole soundtrack, just a single song, is the Beach song from the SNES game Plok. It's insane. It sounds like a modern electronic track. I have no idea how Follin got a SNES to sound that good. It's just crazy. Go search "Plok beach" on KZbin and prepare to have your mind blown

I actually listen to this stuff because it brings me back, but it also is better than 90% of today's music. Albeit, it's a midi and it's usually got a Japanese space animi feel to it (for lack of a better word) but it works. This soundtrack in particular seems to use a bit of Russian classical fused with Japanese space anime. The Amazon beat seems aboriginal until it goes all-out awesome and alludes to, and surpasses the energy of, the ending theme.

That Grandmaster theme tho'. Like some huge church organ belting out some kind of religious Bach-esque counterpoint with wonderful harmonies, but underpinned by that almost demonic level distortion..... Will always love this entire OST, but that particular one kills me. I liked a lot of the music I heard on Megadrive, but, boy, this is probably hard to beat, for me anyway.
@barrowmeoct044 жыл бұрын
@Benjamin Owuye Jagun Oh, I might have not explained myself properly. I actually 'like' the distortion (I had the Mega Drive). Maybe the description of demonic distortion wasn't the best, but I was emphasizing the contrast between the choral movements and the gritty distortion. I like that contrast. I remember trying to kill the Grandmaster was such a headache for me. But once I got the hang of it, it's a bit of a quick death really. Still, it's one of my favourite games.

that's funny. I always found the cover artwork to be weird. This was probably for the western release. @Maru969 жыл бұрын
TheLegendOfRenegade Strider was ported by Sega, and it's much better and faithful to the arcade than any Capcom-developed port on the genesis.
@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL9 жыл бұрын
+ben owen It's hard to really say who ported a game because it was common back then to hire subcontractors to do that kind of work. Like Chiki Chiki was published by Sega with the Sega name on it, but now we know it was done by Visco. A lot of Sega ports were subcontracted this way. IMO it's not really incorrect to say it was done by Sega even if another developer did the... well, developing. They did it under contract, so by legal definition Sega was the developer. If anyone finds this kind of stuff interesting gdri.smspower.org/ is a good place to learn. Chances are even Strider was probably subcontracted out. Even these days it still happens--a company might do a game design or art in house and subcontract the actual work of programming and implementing the game to someone else.
@Maru969 жыл бұрын
***** Probably, atlhough Strider plays slightly worse than Ghouls 'n Ghosts due to load times and slowdowns. Ghouls 'n Ghosts for genesis is pretty much perfect to the arcade gameplay-wise.

A lot of emulator sites or torrents host an early ROM of Strider that's missing half of the music. But the real arcade version had all the music you hear in the Genesis port
