Another excellent entry to the RGB series. The Genesis really does output mind-blowingly good RGB, it's the biggest reason I wanted a Framemeister!

Lazy Game Reviews [Try4ce] And the Framemeister is the biggest reason I wanted a Genesis! OK, that's a bit shallow, the real reason I wanted a Genesis was to play the "lost" Contra and Castlevania games, Hard Corps and Bloodlines. Totally worth it, and I've since discovered a lot more on the Genesis that's to my taste than I expected! But with the Framemeister giving me a way to play the Genesis without resorting to composite video was the last push I needed to finally buy the system. Coury, on the other hand, is the life-long Sega kid.

Great video but there is one thing you forgot to point out. While it is very nice Genesis/MD/Sega CD/32X has native RGB output there are unfortunately plenty of games on the system like the Sonic series, Streets of Rage 2&3, Shinobi III, Castlevania Bloodlines, Socket, Toy Story, Beyond Oasis, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, Comix Zone which use dithering effects to create transparencies and extra colors via RF or composite signals. So if you want to see these effects come into play in the games I mentioned we got no choice but play on RF or composite or else we will see raw vertical lines or checker board patterns :(

I remember when I saw the original RGB101 and 202 video and saw how inferior the picture quality of the Wii\WiiU emulation compared to the NES itself, but with the Genesis it's surprisingly VERY close. In fact I do like how vibrant the colors look in some of the games like Ristar, though that might be just Sonic's UGC. Also I use a Model 1 Genesis (due to hearing the differences in Audio quality) and Model 2 CD (Due to reliability and not having to use the menu to eject the disc). All in all, the Genesis is my favorite game system of all time, and it holds a near and dear place in my heart. Great video as always guys!
@mylifeingaming9 жыл бұрын
***** [Try4ce] The big difference in Genesis emulation releases seems to be who developed it... Coury noted the developer in our ending comparisons. M2 is famous for treating the original material with more care and respect than a lot of other developers! They also handled the 3D Sega ports for the 3DS, as well as the better Wii U emulators, like GBA.
@RedArremer9 жыл бұрын
***** The saturation and brightness can always be increased in the RGB side. I think a lot of the "it looks pretty close" moments in the comparisons wouldn't be that close if brightness and saturation were set to the same levels. Even with the current settings, I could still see more detail in the RGB side.

Thanks for this useful info! I use my 60hz modded PAL Mega Drive 1 on a Sony Trinitron CRT with an RGB SCART cable, and it looks amazing. It doesn't look as pretty on a large Samsung HDTV without an external scaler, as when objects move, they will blur. The 'jailbar' effect is also quite noticable, but I don't think it is worth modifying my console even more.

@Epsilonsama5 жыл бұрын
Important thing with RGB on the Genesis. Due to the Genesis lack of transparency support if you go the RGB route you will gain picture clarity but lose transparency hacks the developers did using dithering. Things like the waterfalls in Sonic games and the lightbulbs in SoR 2 are big examples.

The Analogue Nt is something we'd love to get our hands on, and that would be a good impetus for us to do an update video.

I didn't notice any comments on this, but forgive me if this has already been brought to your attention: The Wondermega consoles (Sega model 1, Victor model 1, and Victor model 2) were only equipped with a dedicated RF, RCA composite, and S-video outputs, out of the box. They require modification for RGB, but the video encoder chip has the RGB video lines available. I believe there are also some X'eye revisions that lack the model 2 Genesis' A/V out, therefore requiring modification for RGB output.

In Britain the computer company Amstrad made a Mega Drive/PC combo called the Mega PC. Not sure about the actual quality but it outputs RGB with a VGA connector. Problem is that's it kinda rare because the PC section was really underpowered so nowadays it's really expensive.
@SuperDerek9 жыл бұрын
A side note along these same lines is that the Sega 32X actually has a vastly improved composite video encoder over the Genesis consoles. It's still far inferior to RGB of course, but back in the day before RGB was feasible in the US, the 32X was your best shot of getting a quality signal, and in some cases I've heard it fixed jailbar and rainbow artifacts. :)
@mylifeingaming9 жыл бұрын
SuperDerek RPG Reviews [Coury] One other person said the same - I'd heard that it got rid of jailbars, but all of the captures I did (not the still Sonic image) were via a 32X on a Genesis 1. I actually even did straight capture from the Genesis as well and still got the same level of jailbars. I'll definitely have to do some more research - I mean it makes total sense. I didn't try to capture just straight composite with the 32X though since the segment was so short, but thats another great point. When we eventually get to the point updates to these episodes, I'll definitely be sure to test and address all that.
@SuperDerek9 жыл бұрын
***** Oh cool! Well I just figured you guys didn't mention it since the video is about getting the BEST picture, not the second best picture from your Genesis. ;) Great video as always though guys. :)
@GameSack9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, using a 32X and it's composite output gets rid of the rainbow bars that many normal Genesis units have. It also makes dithering much more clear. But to be honest, I can spot dithering a mile away even with an RF connection.
@newguy1866 жыл бұрын
2:08: The way to solve this is either a 32x, or getting a JVC X eye (if you can get pas the large price), which features a standard RCA connector in addition to the model 2 connector. And I'm pretty sure that means the standard RCA connector looks better than the model 2 connector.
@guspaz9 жыл бұрын
Can't wait for the Retrovision cables (albeit for my SNES)! I think that they'll be the simplest option for most people, so long as their TV does an OK job upscaling. Many of the problems people have with upscaling are due to the terrible quality composite video anyhow, so hopefully they'll do better on component. I certainly had much less trouble with my SNES S-VIDEO output compared to composite.
@RedArremer9 жыл бұрын
Adam Zey Just be warned that component won't help incorrect upscaling of 240p if your HDTV is guilty of it. Drop shadows will not display properly, and any sort of graphics that alternate horizontally will either be full-solid or invisible or 'combed'. The ONLY way to fix those issues is to get a quality external upscaler like the Framemeister. Retrovision's cables are best suited for those with low-res CRTs that accept component input, or the rare HDTV that actually handles 240p properly if you're lucky.
@guspaz9 жыл бұрын
+KarbuncleX I'm not sure the problem is that serious in the end: of the two dozen games that I've got, only one (Super Mario Kart) seems to do anything that bad scalers mishandle, so for most games (or for anybody who has a TV with a good scaler) then the Framemeister would not be required. Furthermore, the retrovision cables will be the best option for the Framemeister for most people. Doing RGB directly from the SNES to the Framemeister is tricky, because you've got to worry about composite sync vs sync-on-composite, PAL vs NTSC cables (they're actually different cables due to an extra resistor needed), SCART vs JP-21... Or you can just use the component cable, where all that stuff is already taken care of. Plus the cables are already tuned for the specific consoles (in terms of levels), requiring less tweaking on the framemeister... Plus you can use readily available component video switchers for multiple consoles, wheras I don't think anybody has ever found a SCART switcher that works with the framemeister. Monoprice sells a 4-input component switcher for twenty bucks. So you can buy the HD Retrovision cables today (well, when available) for use on your TV directly, and if you decide to buy a Framemeister in the future, you've already got a good cable to connect directly to it (via a passive d-terminal adapter) without having to order expensive JP-21 cables. Plus, component cables connect to the rear of the framemeister, not the front like RGB, so you get to have a tidier setup too.
@RedArremer9 жыл бұрын
Adam Zey Have to disagree with you on a few counts. For example, the moment I hooked a SNES up to my Sony HDTV, I immediately noticed the incorrect upscaling of the 240p signal. All shadows that should flicker at 30 fps were instead combed and solid in the comb sections. Also your point about the component cables being easier to hook into a Framemeister is technically correct, but you have to consider the enthusiast willing to pony up the money to buy a Framemeister in the first place will want the purist possible signal coming from their console. In this regard, the extra processing chip used in the Retrovision cable isn't needed when you've already got a Framemeister. On top of that, the cables cost just as much as getting a SCART or JP-21 cable. Ultimately it boils down to what I said before in the Retrovision cables are a superb choice for CRTs and some HDTVs, but there's really no point to missing out on RGB if you have a Framemeister.

+KarbuncleX I found that few games seemed to use flicker-shadows (SMK was the only one I came across, although I didn't test each game extensively, and shadows may be used in parts I didn't check). I'd argue that it's possible the HDR cables may produce a better image on the framemeister than straight-up RGB due to being designed for the specific consoles, but it's also possible the framemeister may be able to do similar corrections (or that there is no appreciable difference either way), but that would need to wait for the release of the cables to find out. That said, there is still convenience, particularly being able to use a component switch connected to the rear of the framemeister, instead of having to manually swap SCART cables as MLIG needs to do. If I ponied up the cash for a framemeister, I'd likely want to have less hassle. Personally, though, I'm holding out hope that kevtris will do an HDMI mod for the SNES as he did for the NES, which would render the framemeister obsolete at least as far as the SNES is concerned. In that case you're avoiding analog entirely by pulling digital signals from the console before the analog conversion takes place in the first place, and minimizing latency by buffering only a few scanlines at a time. He's said he's considering doing the SNES and genesis as his next project now that the NES HDMI mod is done. Until then, I'll grab the component cables cables as an upgrade to the S-VIDEO cables that I currently use on my SNES.

The Genesis' poor composite video didn't do Sega any favors back in the day. I still find their system's exterior designs to be the best the industry has had.

I did an s-video mod to my model 1 Genesis & got those jailbars, but I never saw them when I switched to RGB. I wonder which hw revisions are more likely to have them in RGB.

Been keeping my eye on those HD Retrovision cables for my Mega Drive 2. I use a Retron 5 for recording stuff on my channel but would be nice to hook up the actual Mega Drive from time to time. I kind of want to see if anyone would notice that I wasn't using the Retron if I could get super clear quality from the actual console. There's a lot of those MD compilations out there but, really, the pool of games to choose from is pretty much limited to just Sega's own games. Great for all the Sonic games and all that but a bit of a pain if you want to play Chiki Chiki Boys for a while.

Mellow Gaming [Try4ce] I enjoyed playing some Genesis games on the Wii Virtual Console for a while, but for me, it was the Genesis Konami games that were always out of reach. Since getting a Genesis, Contra Hard Corps and Rocket Knight Adventures are my two favorite games on the system (so far), and you can't get them any other way than for the original console!

Yeah, and the way Konami is now the chances of seeing them any time soon is slim. There's a bunch of games by Capcom and Virgin Entertainment I'd like to see get releases.

I use a model 2. People constantly tell me to use a model 1. Is there really a difference?
@mylifeingaming9 жыл бұрын
Console Wars [Try4ce] It's a sound issue moreso than a graphics issue. But not all model 1s have the "best" sound, either. If you buy a "High Definition Graphics" console, then there's a pretty good chance it has the best Genesis audio, but there ARE some revisions of the "High Definition Graphics" model that also have "bad" sound. That said, if you feel you enjoy the sound from your model 2 just fine, then I'd say stick with it.

Model 1 has mono audio Model 2 has stereo audio

Rahman Ad.22, while true utilizing the AV cable on the model 1 will give mono sound, running an aux cable out of the headphone jack into speakers gives amazing sound. I have both models and my early edition model 1 sound blows the model 2 sound away.

Doesn't the sega cd have audio enhancements if you use it's audio plugs
@RetroArcadeGuy6 жыл бұрын
Model 1 has stereo output on headphone jack, can control volume with a slider, mono audio on the back. Most of the Model 1 has the best audio and a bugged sound chip developers (specially music creators) exploited subtly (the famous YM2612). Model 2 has stereo output on the back. Lacks a headphones jack or a volume slider. Sounds crap because of the embedded sound chip into the processor (the infamous YM3438). Needs an audio mod to sound like Model 1's sound chip, and keeping the "improvements" of this one. Which one is your favorite?
