Another excellent entry to the RGB series. The Genesis really does output mind-blowingly good RGB, it's the biggest reason I wanted a Framemeister!

Lazy Game Reviews [Try4ce] And the Framemeister is the biggest reason I wanted a Genesis! OK, that's a bit shallow, the real reason I wanted a Genesis was to play the "lost" Contra and Castlevania games, Hard Corps and Bloodlines. Totally worth it, and I've since discovered a lot more on the Genesis that's to my taste than I expected! But with the Framemeister giving me a way to play the Genesis without resorting to composite video was the last push I needed to finally buy the system. Coury, on the other hand, is the life-long Sega kid.

The model 1 always had the coolest look in my opinion. The Stereo sound being in the front is a bummer but easily overcome with a right angle headphone jack and a long audio wire :P

*Is it connected to your soundbar too or stereo system?!?*
@jaredt25902 ай бұрын
The stereo sound in the front was for headphones, a stereo sound signal being sent to a tv wasn’t standard yet for game consoles when the Genesis model one was out. Later it would become standard when the Super Nintendo allowed gamers for the first time to get split sound out of both their left and right speakers on their tv. The model 2 and later the cdx would follow this.

Great video but there is one thing you forgot to point out. While it is very nice Genesis/MD/Sega CD/32X has native RGB output there are unfortunately plenty of games on the system like the Sonic series, Streets of Rage 2&3, Shinobi III, Castlevania Bloodlines, Socket, Toy Story, Beyond Oasis, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, Comix Zone which use dithering effects to create transparencies and extra colors via RF or composite signals. So if you want to see these effects come into play in the games I mentioned we got no choice but play on RF or composite or else we will see raw vertical lines or checker board patterns :(

I remember when I saw the original RGB101 and 202 video and saw how inferior the picture quality of the Wii\WiiU emulation compared to the NES itself, but with the Genesis it's surprisingly VERY close. In fact I do like how vibrant the colors look in some of the games like Ristar, though that might be just Sonic's UGC. Also I use a Model 1 Genesis (due to hearing the differences in Audio quality) and Model 2 CD (Due to reliability and not having to use the menu to eject the disc). All in all, the Genesis is my favorite game system of all time, and it holds a near and dear place in my heart. Great video as always guys!

***** [Try4ce] The big difference in Genesis emulation releases seems to be who developed it... Coury noted the developer in our ending comparisons. M2 is famous for treating the original material with more care and respect than a lot of other developers! They also handled the 3D Sega ports for the 3DS, as well as the better Wii U emulators, like GBA.

***** The saturation and brightness can always be increased in the RGB side. I think a lot of the "it looks pretty close" moments in the comparisons wouldn't be that close if brightness and saturation were set to the same levels. Even with the current settings, I could still see more detail in the RGB side.

Watching this video again 5 years later after first discovering it and your channel. Important thing with RGB on the Genesis. Due to the Genesis lack of transparency support if you go the RGB route you will gain picture clarity but lose transparency hacks the developers did using dithering. Things like the waterfalls in Sonic games and the lightbulbs in SoR 2 are big examples.

Console Wars [Try4ce] It's a sound issue moreso than a graphics issue. But not all model 1s have the "best" sound, either. If you buy a "High Definition Graphics" console, then there's a pretty good chance it has the best Genesis audio, but there ARE some revisions of the "High Definition Graphics" model that also have "bad" sound. That said, if you feel you enjoy the sound from your model 2 just fine, then I'd say stick with it.

Most of the Model 1 has the best audio and a bugged sound chip developers (specially music creators) exploited subtly (the famous YM2612). Model 2 has stereo output on the back. Lacks a headphones jack or a volume slider. Sounds crap because of the embedded sound chip into the processor (the infamous YM3438). Needs an audio mod to sound like Model 1's sound chip, and keeping the "improvements" of this one. Which one is your favorite?

For video however, I will need an adapter that goes from the 32x to the Genesis then a SCART to my framemeister since the CD uses the Genesis as a passthrough I wont need to include it in the loop? I didn't notice any comments on this, but forgive me if this has already been brought to your attention: The Wondermega consoles (Sega model 1, Victor model 1, and Victor model 2) were only equipped with a dedicated RF, RCA composite, and S-video outputs, out of the box. They require modification for RGB, but the video encoder chip has the RGB video lines available. I believe there are also some X'eye revisions that lack the model 2 Genesis' A/V out, therefore requiring modification for RGB output.

Really helpful video but I'm left wondering if I should use a model II Genesis with an RGB scart cable to component converter or RGB scart to HDMI converter. Leaning towards HDMI but not sure if it would matter too much if my lcd tv is only 720p res.
@mylifeingaming9 жыл бұрын
+Varg [Try4ce] Well, it's possible that the converter could introduce a lot of lag and scale poorly if it's a cheap one. The Framemeister isn't cheap, but it is for now one of the better options for playing on an HDTV. If your TV handles 240p sources correctly, then a component converter might not be a bad idea. If you want to play on a CRT that has component inputs, then a component converter is a GREAT idea.

I hooked my rgb cable up to my genesis today and I’m getting an interlaced image. I thought the genesis runs at 224p why is this happening?
@mylifeingaming4 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] There are a very few Genesis games that can do 480i, like the 2-player mode in Sonic 2. But normally it should be 240p. The system wouldn't be sending an interlaced picture, so it may just be confusion over how your display or device is handling it. PVMs might say 480i when it receives the signal, but it is displayed correctly. Modem TVs may add deinterlacing artifacts to 240p because it mistakenly believes it's interlaced. Keep in mind that 240p is not a proper standard, and even if it's handled correctly, it may not be called that by the display.
@_20Years4 жыл бұрын

[Try4ce] Generic converters like that tend to have trouble with 240p, and add extra lag. We prefer to recommend devices that are designed by specifically for video games. For SCART, you could go with www.retrotink.com/product-page/retrotink-2x-scart or videogameperfection.com/products/open-source-scan-converter/ The RetroTINK is simpler, but the OSSC can be sharper. and can also take component and VGA.

I kind of want to see if anyone would notice that I wasn't using the Retron if I could get super clear quality from the actual console. There's a lot of those MD compilations out there but, really, the pool of games to choose from is pretty much limited to just Sega's own games. A side note along these same lines is that the Sega 32X actually has a vastly improved composite video encoder over the Genesis consoles. It's still far inferior to RGB of course, but back in the day before RGB was feasible in the US, the 32X was your best shot of getting a quality signal, and in some cases I've heard it fixed jailbar and rainbow artifacts. :)
@mylifeingaming9 жыл бұрын
SuperDerek RPG Reviews [Coury] One other person said the same - I'd heard that it got rid of jailbars, but all of the captures I did (not the still Sonic image) were via a 32X on a Genesis 1. I actually even did straight capture from the Genesis as well and still got the same level of jailbars. I'll definitely have to do some more research - I mean it makes total sense. I didn't try to capture just straight composite with the 32X though since the segment was so short, but thats another great point. When we eventually get to the point updates to these episodes, I'll definitely be sure to test and address all that.

+Jarrah White [Try4ce] Gotta play it on a CRT. It's a very weird resolution and the Framemeister will not do it. Not sure about the OSSC.
@WhiteJarrah7 жыл бұрын
+My Life in Gaming OK. Personally, I'm not too worried about it. My copy of Sonic 2 is on the Mega Drive Ultimate Collection PS3 compilation. I use Generic SCART to HDMI, and I've been told it handles the Sonic 2 resolutions. I was just curious what you guys do, because you didn't mention any solution in this video.
@mylifeingaming7 жыл бұрын
+Jarrah White [Try4ce] The mode is interesting for testing purposes, but I don't have any interest in actually playing it. It's a nuisance because it's the first demo after the Sonic 2 title screen, so I have to get into the game fast before it screws with the resolution.
@WhiteJarrah7 жыл бұрын
+My Life in Gaming Ah yes, the dreaded blackout during resolution switches. Speaking of testing, I currently have my eyes on an RGB SCART amplifier with one SCART input and 11 SCART outputs. There's an electronics shop just outside of Sydney selling them. I plan on picking one up in June. If it's any good, would you like me to send one up to you guys for review purposes?

Your Scart cable affiliate makes absolutely the best cables, I think I have 4 cables for my NON-TMSS Genesis, Japan Only MD, Genesis2/SegaCD2/32x (with Mega Amp to make it sound good,) and just a Genesis 2 (with CCAM, prefer Sega CD.) The audio is noticeably better between those with good sound processors and poor ones. I recommend everyone look at Retro RGB. As for jailbars, I mainly bought a 32x just for a pass through to make the scart output cleaner.

11:30: I think you could've mentioned the fact that the JVC X eye, in addition to having a model 2 AV multi out, also has standard composite and stereo audio jacks. Does using this connection have any sort of improvement over the AV multi out composite cables?
@noir75658 жыл бұрын
The Victor WonderMega and JVC X'eye have Far superior Audio Chips than the MegaDrive or Mega-CD. Combining one of these two systems with a Sega 32x, an Everdrive, and RGB out you get MegaDrive/Mega-CD/32x/and MasterSystem all in one console with superior Audio and Video to any model of Genesis.

svideo on my genesis is the 1st mod ive ever done.. while its certainly sloppy when it comes to how i ran wires and mounted the ports ive NEVER had issues with the signal itself.

Thank god for the Pal system and scart connection. Sooooo much time and money saved. 8€ cable on ebay and it’s done.

I'm suprised it wasn't mentioned here but certain models of the Sega Genesis have even worse quality composite video than others, particularly certain revisions of the model 2 and it's because of the specific video encoders used.

2:22 - Here is a question for someone that is having trouble finding a good CRT with component inputs, instead of just composite and s-video. Instead of modding the console, is it possible to pull the S-Video signal by using one of those SCART to S-Video adapter plugs that are all over Amazon?
@mylifeingaming8 жыл бұрын
+itchyisvegeta [Try4ce] If I understand you correctly, then sure. You use an S-video cable from your console and plug it into the adapter. Then you plug that into a SCART input. It will only be S-video quality, however.
@itchyisvegeta8 жыл бұрын
That's ok as long as it is better than composite quality. Totally gonna try this, cause it sounds like a great alternative to S-Video modding. Thank you.
@itchyisvegeta7 жыл бұрын
Tried it with the "1 Pcs CESS Scart extension and RCA + S-Video VHS adapter" from amazon. My CRT with my model 2 genesis says, "Signal not compatible". May to do more extensive testing, but looks like a no go.

any developments with the guys from HD Retrovision? I cant seem to find any updates that aren't a couple of months old, no clues on a release anyway. Too bad the RetroClarity didn't get funded, how did you get one?

dylbob9000 [Try4ce] RetroClarity asked us to take a look at it, so they sent us one! Last we heard, they still intend to make a few of them regardless of the Kickstarter situation, but it just won't be on as large of a scale.

I think you should have mentioned the partial motherboard model 2, or board revisions VA3 and VA4. They have good audio just like the early model ones, and especially the VA4, have better video quality, it's so much better that composite looks better with the VA4 than on an earlier Genesis.

4:40 Which SCART-to-component boxes would you recommend on a budget, and is there a more-or-less affordable one that does not squash the image to 16:9?

[Try4ce] The one I recommend right now is the RGB2COMP by Mike Chi. castlemaniagames.com/products/retrotink-rgb2comp-analog-transcoder-to-convert-rgb-scart-video-to-component-video

Okay... I'm about to buy a Sega Megadrive and will be plugging it in to a Samsung CRT via its Scart RGB input socket. So all I need do is buy a video to scart rgb cable (correct size) , similar to the solution on my commodore 64 and that's job done?
@mylifeingaming4 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] Be careful. Cheap cables, even if they call them "RGB" might just be a composite signal in a SCART hood. Buy from a reputable manufacturer and don't buy the cheapest ones.
@S1eeperServ1ce4 жыл бұрын
@@mylifeingaming Thanks. I have recently found and utilised a UK husband and wife business that specialise in fabricating cables, rgb cables and other useful retro products for old systems. If its permitted I may post their business details here in brief.

Nah, they only became common in the mid 90s. I remember all my TVs never had RGB so I had to ask my mom to specifically buy an expensive one for xmas just for RGB. That was around '93 or '94.

Wow, I remember saving my money and buying a mega drive cd for 600 bucks. I also had to cut two jumpers in my genesis in order to get it to work. I was just a kid

Does scart transmit both video and Audio ?
@mylifeingaming8 жыл бұрын
+dogeymon83 [Try4ce] Yes! You can actually even get a SCART for the Genesis that takes audio from the front headphone jack for stereo sound!

Good video. I do have to make a minor clarification. Early releases of the Xeye lacked the multi a/v port that was later added. I cant determine which month of release this took place but I personally have one mfg in March 94 that is missing that port. I know of a few who have ones with mfg dates of June 94 and older that do have the port. I also shared this in Sega Collectors on FB. Well done.

darthv72 [Coury] Thank you! I was looking for info and heard that some models of the X'Eye were not capable of doing RGB. Now this makes total sense!
