Is it worth it? Here's the cost of this stuff in 2024 (estimated): Nomad Console: $250 LCD Screen: $80 Nomad Pak MKII: $55 Two 18650 batteries: $25 Everdrive X7 (used): $120 That's an estimated total of $530, not taking shipping into account. I'm curious to know what you guys think about it!

With all the retro handhelds on the market, absolutely not unfortunately.

It’s worth it if you really love the mega drive. I got one about 2 years back. Was expensive to import into the U.K. but I love the system. Had screen modded and had the original battery pack. It took less power due to the new screen but would eat batteries still. I got the laser bear pack this year and it’s enabled me to play it even more. I’m very careful with it as I don’t want to have to get another.

Loved my Nomad until the contrast wheel busted :( The external battery pack was insane, I never played it not plugged in. We had a van that had cigarette lighters by all the doors so I could sit in any seat and be able to power it. At home I was always tethered as well.

PROTIP: Make sure you're using the correct power adapter. I was lazy, didn't look and used a Sega adapter with a different polarity and fried my LCD modded Nomad...still have my original Nomad though.
@travisbowmanmusic2 ай бұрын
Ahh, that's a damn shame! Truth be told... I used the wrong batteries for the LaserBear Nomad Battery Pak, and fried this one too. Luckily it just fried the old screen components that were going to be replaced with the LCD mod. Always always always research before plugging stuff in!

Which lcd mod were you using, the one that has the osd by using the mode button (cheap chinese aliexpress one seen in this vid including stuttering video and input lag), or the one without it, and has a bordered window in some games like sonic 1, or the rgb drv which is extremely hard to get and is no longer available

Nah a hacked 3DS is the way to go. The Nomad is entirely too bulky to fit in a pocket.

I've heard reports that this type of lcd mod from handheld legend, the highspeedio has strobing issues after 15 minutes of play were the lcd would bug out. Did you experience this yet? This is the model where your allowed to select a screen filter through the osd, right? Also, does the screen exhibit tearing/ jittering artifacts, does it have input lag more than the original lcd?

Seen a ton of epic mods to modernize these things but Ive kept mine unmodded for nostalgia purposes. I mean I have a 6"5" Android with LED screen in it that Ive turned into a retro system that does the same exact things a modded one would do and have a bigger screen. Either way still pretty sick what people come up with for them.

Honestly, SEGA had a potential winner that could've sold like the Gameboy. The ever changing, confusing roadmap killed consumer confidence and killed off any developers who didn't move to the PC or PlayStation.

The big plus of having a Nomad vs a regular console is the Dpad. I have yet to find a better Dpad than on the Nomad; it’s a travesty that no other controller ever used it.

They had rechargeable cell packs and batteries. If you went with rechargeable batteries no alkaline, but the batteries used for video tape cameras.

Thanks for doing this video on the Nomad. I currently have 5 Nomads. I buy them not working and repair and upgrade them. There was a rechargeable battery pack available for the Nomad, unfortunately if you find one the batteries will be no good and it will have to modded to take modern batteries. There is a TFT screen you can mod the Nomad with that is cheap and uses the Composite output, easy install. I think the TFT is a better looking option over the IPS because it compliments the original look with a better screen. I haven't come across any Nomads with leaking Caps yet, but I have noticed after recapping with high quality caps the video and sound improves. This is a milestone in video gaming history, SEGA's "Switch".
