I spent all of my highschool years playing Sega Rally 2 with friends on Saturday nights, after a movie at the local theater. Trying to beat our records, having fun mocking our driving and the quirks of the dead old cabinet which was slowly falling to pieces, suddenly pulling the handbrake to ruin each other's attempts or exploiting the secret cheat code that gave you the Delta and the Celica. Sadly, the arcade side of the place shut down two years ago due to a fire. I'll always have fond memories of this game, a true gem

The more realism the less charm and imagination . The wonderful thing about games is that you can escape from reality and enter another reality that is different . This was always the case with the older games . With today’s soulless super realistic games all your doing is escaping one reality to enter pretty much the same reality that you already live so all the imagination, all the fantasy , all the charm and all the magic that makes you feel good in your heart vanishes. It’s just a simulation . Numb

A Model 3 Step 2.0 board powered this game. The board was released in 1997 and had a PowerPC 603e CPU at 166MHz, and six Real3D Pro-1000 GPU units. By comparison, an ultra high-end PC at the time would have had a P2-300 with a Voodoo 1 GPU. That combo was roughly capable of running N64 like graphics at 30 to 60 FPS at 640x480. I know this is an older video but just came across it after going down a retro arcade game rabbit hole. I remember being blown away by this game in the arcade when it came out; especially with the graphics and the handbrake - my teenage self was wondering "how do you even use this?!". Looking at it with older eyes, wow - how far games have come. It's a shame every arcade these days is just filled with essentially gambling games for tokens rather than what I remember - but it's not like I'm the target demographic any more. There is one thing in this game that I would like to point out: Pacenotes. If I was rallying with these notes, I would deal with it fairly well. Okay, okay, they are rather simple, but for a late 90s game they are pretty detailed. Calls like "narrows", "opens" and "caution" come up surprisingly often, and they even tell you the distance to the next corner. The first Colin Mcrae Rally did not have that integrated, and that is two years newer if I recall correctly. V-rally series at the time did not implement it at all.

95% of my arcade budget went on this game. Nothing was better for pure driving fun. Also played the first one, but this was far better. The driving physics is convincing, but very forgiving, you could recklessly fly into a corner and not smash the car up, like it would happen on the lastest version of DiRT Rally on modern gaming PC, arcade games back then were tight on memory, running crash graphics is extra memory and programming and work for the CPU, program will softly correct driving crashes and keep you going forward. This was a little after they started bringing out the first simple polygon based games....Virtua Racing, Virtua fighter the first ones. When processors and memory allowed that kind of data rate processing for convincing enough playable 3D environments.
