I don't know how many feel the same, but I feel this way about the NES port of DD1. Maybe part of it is nostalgia, but also just the 8-bit NES soundtrack somehow worked better than the original imo. TMNT Tournament Fighters has a special place in my heart. It's a very love-hate relationship for the Genesis version, though, thanks to the fighting game jank. I still wish that Konami's original characters got the action figure treatment (including Sisyphus). Mystery of Convoy is funny as Takara misspelled their character's name on the packaging and in the game. For those curious, Convoy, not Comvoy as they wrote it, is Takara's name for Optimus Prime. Headmaster is better than Mystery (low bar), but only by a little since now you have a health gauge.

Fun video! I personally disagree about Tails Skypatrol, I actually have fun playing that one despite its high difficulty. The thing about the game is that you HAVE to know when to slow down and speed up Tails, just blindly trying to rush thru will get you pancaked over and over. Its quite trial and error heavy, and then theres the odd hit detection (Tails hitbox is a mere ONE pixel, so everything ELSE has a bigger hitbox to compensate). But once I got into the games flow I genuinely founf myself enjoying it. Personally, the main reason I like it is because its a very unique take on the Shoot Em Up/Rail Shooter. That said, Im surprised you didnt include the truly awful Game Gear versions of Sonic Spinball and Sonic Blast. Spinball on GG is a complete and utter mess, its jerky framerate, ugly graphics and utterly broken controls/physics will give you a newfound appreciation for the Genesis version. And Sonic Blast on GG is a 2D Sonic game with all the fun and appeal sucked out: its awkward mix of pre-rendered graphics and 2D sprites are just plain tacky and downright dull looking (to quote another reviewer, Sonic looks like a microwaved Happy Meal toy in it!), and the gameplay just isn't fun, even though Sonic has a double jump in it. Its slow as molasses, clunky, almost entirely devoid of challenge (and when it DOES get challenging, like in the water level and the secret final boss, it dips right into complete and utter BS territory) and all around uninspired in every way. Not even being able to play as Knuckles can salvage it. You can tell it was thrown together in a hurry just to give the GG one last Sonic game as a quick sendoff. Both are solid contenders for the worst games in the Sonic series. Id honestly rather play Sonic 4 Episode 1 over those quill-covered turds--and dont even get me started on that one...

The third one was awful. You could go into an in-game shop, and buy weapons and life refill items, but for an actual credit that was in the machine (they were mostly 50p/c by the time Double Dragon 3 came out), so instead of picking up some bin-chicken and a baseball bat like in Final Fight or SoR, you paid an extra dollar to get them in DD 3. I think they invented microtransactions.
@Bloodstar-o73 ай бұрын
Honestly same here. But arcade cabinets were big and expensive. I played them less at arcades and more at random places like movie theaters, restaurants and bars, so there weren't as many machines, and the machines that existed were more likely to be something more popular. Something like Contra 3 from Konami, Marvel vs Capcom, or the latest 3D fighting games. Another rare but popular choice was a Neo*Geo cabinet that you could swap games or have multiple games on. Metal Slug + Bubble Bobble + some SNK fighter.

I thought Shadow of the Beast 2 was quite decent, plus - it's got vibes for days! Most people fail to realize it's not a standard action game, but rather an arcade adventure, with inventory puzzles and a definitive order of events. The most fun part is figuring everything out, because once you do, the whole thing can be finished in under 15 minutes. Though the Amiga version is prettier, the Genny one plays much better and has an actual ending cutscene. The SegaCD (and FM Towns) conversion feels very different and lacks in the atmosphere department IMO.

Yeah my friend and I played SotB 2 all the time when it came out on the Amiga, it was so much fun trying to figure out what you had to do and it hand atmosphere in spades. Trial and error was very common in games back then, it was just the norm to have to play through sections of a game again because you died, we didn't think anything of it.

I feel like you should take note that the version of Dark Castle you showed aswell as what the AVGN reviewed is actually a port of the original name on DOS. The reason the controls feel awkward was because the game was NOT meant to be played with a controller. It was originally made to use with a mouse

I wouldn't bother with BTTF2&3 on NES either. It's one of those games that where you have to collect things and are constantly getting attacked, and there is no direction without a guide. BTTF NES is actually a fun 'bad game' once you get the hang of the controls and hit boxes in the game. I beat it many times with assistance at all.

Regarding the first music played, I'm kind of fond of Batman Returns for the Genesis. It's less fun (more frustrating) than the first, but I like all the moves Batman can do. Shadow of the Beast has no nostalgia for me, however. It has the clunky controls of a PC port, which has no place on a console like the 16-bit Sega.

The clunky controls and crusty graphics of Batman Returns on the Genesis give it a unique charm, I actually like that game a lot. I can't honestly say it's a good game, but I do enjoy playing through it regardless.

Did the developers even tried playing their games?

i believe developers did play as in check or test their games for bugs or glitches if a bug or a glitch is found they have to send the game back to fix bug or glitch

I had Back to the Future 3 on the ZX Spectrum. Now, THAT was a sh*tshow! 😆 SLX, I thank you for playing these abominations so I don't have to! 👍😆 Edit: Yes, please. I would certainly like more in this vein. There's likely a mountain of less than stellar games you could choose from, so keep 'em coming, my good man. I always enjoy your content anyway, but I'm especially entertained by your metaphors, similes and analogies used to describe negative gaming experiences. "The vinegar in the open wound that is a video game!" 🤣

That Master System Indiana Jones game actually got a Game Gear port that came out in North America. Everything you said about it is valid, but as a kid I didn't have an options so I played the hell out of it.

As a 12-year-old i couldn't muster much respect for Mario Is Missing, but i feel very differently now. Some of Rob Wallace's renditions of Koji Kondo's mucic are quite dreamy. Beyond that i largely agree that the other games mentioned are substandard at best

You've always seemed like a nice guy so I can't in good conscience say I want to see more videos like this as that would just be cruel and unusual punishment.;) Honestly I think I'd rather just see more videos focusing more in depth on good games you may have only touched on briefly in past episodes.

I find it funny that in the thumbnail, the rendition of Tails is from an anime, Mario’s is from a game, and Marty McFly’s is from the original movies.

Regardless of the system, am I the only person on Earth who HATED Double Dragon II? The control scheme just plain sucks! Every time you turn from one direction to the other, the kick and punch buttons flip and you are always kicking backward. Does this not bother anyone else?!

It bothers me. It's a counterintuitive scheme likely implemented to "innovate" upon the beat 'em up genre.

I would definitely subscribe to some more videos like this! This video had me laughing my arse off my chair in certain parts even though I don't agree with very single game in it. Sometimes you just gotta crap on bad games where laughing at how bad they are in humour is the only saving grace. ''Supercross Mcgrath 2000'' had me laughing so much when you said that we couldn't even blame the gaming console for the older graphics lol. Lots of crapping on Acclaim which was great and well deserved. Arena and Flying Edge were subsidiaries of Acclaim so if you see those names, you've been warned! ''Wayne's World'' got another mention as well as ''Dark Castle'' from EA which was to be expected.

Aklaim was one of those companies that tried so hard, but always managed to poop out a distorted, lesser, redheaded, stepchild version of whatever game they were trying to port. Even when they did develop something of their own, it came out the same.
