Episode Notes:
1. All the Sega Rally Revo/3 games running on real hardware. Nothing is emulated.
Even Sega Rally 3 is running the full PC based code.
2. I used the PC version of Revo for all the footage of that game. If you look closely, you'll see the frame hitching.
3. Teknoparrot will also play other Sega arcade games that were PC based.
4. The PSP version of Revo really does have some brutal load times. Upwards of 30 seconds in some cases. I used a component cable for the capture.
5. Sega Rally Online Arcade is running on the PS3 for this footage. I have no clue if it does it on the Xbox 360, but here there is slowdown and frame tearing at various times.
6. I did not show the GBA or N-Gage Sega Rally games because, well, they aren't very good.
7. I felt the title worked in many ways. Sega Rally in general is mostly forgotten today, Sega Rally Revo and its spin offs are forgotten, and Sega itself has fallen from its perch as a dominant arcade maker.

@@DarthSillac 😳 WOW! You've worked on a TON of incredible racing games! You didn't just work on them; you're a team leader. Litetally ALL of my favorites. SEGA, Codemasters. You worked on Horizon 5?! Man! That was such a modest comment from someone with so many incredible games on their resume. I have to say, seeing The Dirt and Dirt Rally games running in previews for the first time was just insane. The Sega Rally games instantly bring me back to my childhood. They're legendary. Forza Horizon 5 to me is one of the best racing games ever made. For people who love cars and racing games it's literally like heaven. Thank you so much for adding a comment in here. Just want to mention that Bugbear, who developed the excellent FlatOut series and most recently Wreckfest, were the developers of Revo PSP. That’s why the handling and physics are a bit different, and more similar to FlatOut. Their port of FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage on PSP is one of the best racing games on PSP, and probably why they got to do the PSP version of Revo in the first place. SRS may be gone, but Bugbear is still out there making great racing games!

Simple, straightforward, skill based! And that’s prefect. Games should be reviewed based on what they’re striving to be.

​​@@SegaLordXthere are two ways to Play Sega Rally Revo championship mode at smooth 60 fps: first one is pc version using cheat engine with speedhack at 0.96 value ( Best activate it in race), second is ps3 version with rpcs3 using vblank at 120hz (Best japan version because is the Only one with force feedback on gamepads). The Quick race mode can also be played at 60 fps on PC if you pause the race and click in restart race option.

I remember seeing the original Sega Rally at my local bowling alley in England back in the early to mid 90's and my oldest brother just said "That's the most impressive looking game I've ever seen" and although I didn't say it, I agreed with him 100%. But it wasn't just the visuals that had initially drawn you in but the amazing playability you experienced once you'd parted with a Quid. It still holds a special place in my arcade favourites and would really like to see a home port of some kind.

I actually have the soundtrack to this game on CD. The music was outsourced to a production house called Bob & Barn, which is probably why a lot of it sounds like incidental music that you’d hear on TV.

I'm very young so I never grew up with these games Barely turning 18 in a few months I have no nostalgia for these games, but they're so magical that I basically get second hand nostalgia for them. I wish we got more games like this from Sega and just the games industry at large. They feel timeless to me

@@jonbourgoin182 I feel like I missed out on the Golden Age of gaming in the sense of it maturing and going through so much innovation Which sucks, I didn't get to grow up seeing us going from SNES to N64, or the jump from Ps1 to Ps2 Its easy for me to say as a nerd I wish I could've been there to experience ot first hand, but it's also cause I'm a nerd in the present I can get to appreciate and nerd out over all this stuff so easily I feel like I'm living in the golden age of modern games in the sense of the love for older titles is growing more and more fonder for even new audiences. Especially with rereleases. So I'm sad I wasn't there for when everything was changing so fast. But glad to be here, able to gush over these games and their legacy in the present, and share them so easily.

@@cravenmarigold7750 You may have missed that, but you are getting to live some other revolutions, and most likely in gaming. A.I. may well change how games are developed, how the graphic fidelity will increase and above all how the game systems, including storytelling and whatnot, will react actively to your own choices. Also, there are some amazing games coming out these days and some others that were release in the last couple of decades, that kids from the 90s and 80s could have never even dreamed of.

When I went through a really hard time in my life, I used to play this game to escape, and played it to death for over two years. Got perfect on each league which is quite a challenge. The game was intended to be different from the simulations and to this date still has one of the best stage design from the Canyons, Safari, and Alpine.

Many of the people behind this went to Playground Games and you see the DNA of these games in the Forza Horizon series. Most recent Rally Adventure expansion for Forza Horizon 5 is the closest thing we'll get to a SEGA Rally.

Speaking of Codemasters, Colin McRae rally series back in the days (maybe RBR also) are truly remarkable for the realistic rally stage setups, Sega Rally seems too simple for that, just like a rally equivalent of OutRun

Sega's story is riddled with right thing, wrong time. When Revo was released, the video game industry was all about realism, realism, realism. Releasing a game that focused more on arcade action was a death sentence at that time, especially at a $60 price point. For a lower price, and released now, I bet Revo could have done fairly well for itself.

SR Revo is the first game I have memories of playing. It was available at a PS3 at a supermarket I went to when I was around 4 or 5 years old and they let people play on it to make them interested on the platform, and it was love at first sight for me. I vividly remember repeatedly begging my parents to take me there so I could play it. I was so sad to find out that the Steam release got delisted when I got a PC. Getting it through the high seas nowadays is no biggie but they should bring this back so more people can know it exists.

Good review! I never played Sega Rally, but I do remember seeing it back in the arcades in the '90s. The games were very beautiful! I actually don't mind simple, arcadey racing as sometimes you just want to play something where you just take to the track for an adrenaline rush with no extra frills! It is a shame that the Sega Rally series petered out and also the closing of Sega Racing Studio. I feel like studios just come and go in the modern gaming industry. It seems like there are just higher stakes in modern game development since many titles are bigger budget and it takes longer for a game to be released. I still think there is a market for simple, fast arcade racing games for those of us who grew up with them during the '90s!

Sega Rally was one of those iconic games. One of the few racing games where you could truly get into the zone & be "at one" with your car. As students we played the Saturn port relentlessly - shaving hundreds of a second off our times, learning every single nuance of every track, every gear shift, every undulation .Pure racing joy. Like so many Sega classic racing titles every single course is carefully crafted & every corner is memorable (and therefore an event!) Speaking of which the Saturn port is a masterpiece of coding - just pure sorcery to run that well on the system and still ultra responsive & playable today. I have the arcade port that came with the 2006 PS2 release but the Saturn version just has a certain something about it. Played SR3 at an arcade show thinking it was probably going to be Revo but in an arcade cabinet & was blown away by the difference. Truly a lovely surprise. Glad I downloaded the Online Arcade version for pure arcade thrills. Always feels that it was a little misunderstood at its time of release. People seemed to want sim racers or to be able to tune their cars & customise the paint job etc but there is always a place for pure arcade racing. Game Over Yeah!

I'm glad you pointed out the difference in the camera for Sega Rally 3. I know people notice it, but people forget to point it out sometimes, especially if they end up liking it. I hate it. It makes my eyes and brain very unhappy, and I'm not exaggerating. I'm not especially prone to motion sickness, but I think I'd get a bad case of it if I spent more than a few minutes with the game. It feels to me like I'm making the world spin instead of controlling the car. The looser camera is what I'd call a proper chase camera as it follows the track. For me it's a lot more natural. I think the developers of the earlier games like Daytona USA and Sega Rally understood that the camera locked to the car would be unpleasant for many people, and later developers didn't really know that, at least consciously. Would be cool if that was an option.

Also just wanted to add, if I ever get enough money together I would love a duo cabinet for racing games. I know Extreme arcade cabinets makes these kinda of stuff, but it's quite expensive for me. But one day I might get it. For now I just want a arcade cabinet. The Arcades just felt different compared to playing at home. As you said, you have to pirate the games...yet I think if Sega made home arcades with their games on it, I think it would sell pretty well depending on the costs of course. A console now cost around 500-600 and then the games. An Arcade with screen and everything with around 2500 games cost you around 1500. If Sega ever do that I think they would be surprised on how many they would sell.

It happens that you start to be interested in something and this something starts to come across to you more often... not only as KZbin recommendations, but also as people you follow. literally a couple of weeks ago the rally era began in my life. the streamer I watch started playing rally, I started playing rally on PS1, and at the same time I looked at what was there on Sega. now you are releasing a video about this topic) on PS1 there were arcade and realistic ones, and the rallies from Sega were all arcade, but I was still thinking about playing them) and literally 2 hours ago I discovered this game for the first time 0:15. I hope the series will live on and make more realistic games. after all, not every Sega series survived the default

That low 30 frames per second seems to account for half of the problem. The other half seems to be mastering the art of throttling OFF with subtle wheel corrections instead of flooring it down and spinning around like crazy.

Sega Rally Revo is one of my favorite racing games of all time - probably in my top 3 along with Wipeout 3 Special Edition and Wave Race 64, and just ahead of games like Ridge Racer Type 4, Outrun 2006, Burnout 3 Takedown, and the original Sega Rally. What I look for in a racing game is speed, precise controls, fun and style. I want to spend my time on the track, not in menus tuning and tweaking. Sega Rally Revo delivers exactly what I want and does it better than pretty much any other game out there. The perfect "last hurrah" for old-school arcade racing. I've seen many complaints that it's too hard to control - the steering is twitchy and the grip loose - and yes, it takes a bit getting used to but once you do, the feeling of intense speed combined with just barely being able to maintain perfect control of your car is absolutely unmatched.

I loved Sega Rally on the 360. Had many great racing battles with online friends, a brilliant arcade racer. Really wish it was backwards compatible with the Series X. Got the PSP one too which is also a lot of fun, looks great on that little console. Managed to get the SROA versions too on 360 and PS3, glad I did now it's been delisted. Defo need another SR in our lives or at least get the old ones working on the latest consoles.

Absolutely love this game. Still one of my top 10 games on the Xbox 360 (not, RACING games, ALL games!) and I have a still have a copy on my shelf. I remember all the reviews here in the UK being pretty stellar - Eurogamer gave it a 9/10. Anyone complaining about the lack of realism was missing the point - it's an arcade game and it doesn't need tuning and set-up options! It's all about the gameplay and in that area it excelled. Would happily still play it today if it worked in backwards compatability.

I bounced right off Sega Rally on 360 when I first tried it, but once you get to grips (no pun intended) with the bizarre handling model, it's a terrific racer. Really underrated.

I actually got Sega Rally Revo pretty soon after I got my PSP this summer and man I've loved playing it. It's such a fun racer and I'm so sad that the game didn't perform well commercially. It's truly one of Sega's swan songs of their traditional racers, as mostly everything going forward is Sonic All Stars Racing. I hope that if Sega is willing to go back to these series in the future, that they stick with the gameplay that made them so beloved in the first place, but make them the most content rich games they could be. I bet that could probably be an amazing success for them

I played revo on my then gaming pc. Being a racing games fan and an avid sega rally player back in the arcades, I was really hyped. Having a gtx8800 ultra allowed me to enjoy the crisp graphics in all of their glory. They had an artistic flair and a distinct charm, while the terrain deformation and the piling of mud really stole the show for me. Unfortunately, moving past the scenery, the game proved to be an unremarkable, short term rush, unable to compete with its major contemporaries and falling short on most aspects of the ever growing racing standards. I really wanted to like it, but I ended up deleting it after a couple of days. Honestly, it was no surprise thay it marked the series' end. It was nice coming back to it through this video, though and that's why we dig segalord x ✊️

I realy enjoy Sega Rally Revo on my PSP. One of my favorite racing games. Once a year i finish the game just for fun. It's so simple and relaxing just pickup and play some tracks.

Just picked up the complete WRC Generations for 10 bucks on the Switch I forgot how fun Rally games are. Love to see a more arcadey Sega franchise

Sega Rally is one of the reasons I love the 94-96' Toyota Celica/GT-Four, plus I just like how it looks. I've always wanted to find one for sale but I think they're kind of rare, at least I don't come across them all too much. Never played Revo and too bad it's been removed from Steam so the PC version is only playable if you own a physical copy, that is unless you have a peg leg.

I found the 360 version of revo second hand and cheap a few years back before I was much of a sega fan, I had a pretty decent time and even had some fun playing it with my sisters. It's nice to see this game get more coverage, I might have to give it another play some time

Hey, there's a way to get rid of that annoying 'tick' in the PC version! I found that starting a race and then immediately restarting the race at the beginning of the race sorted it out. It's not ideal, but for quick races, it means we can play without it hitching all the time :) Great video as always ~

Sega Rally 3 (Arcade) and Sega Rally Revo are two of my favorite racing games of all time.

At first i was puzzled by the title, Revo. I wasn't aware it was called this over seas, here in the UK the game is just called, Sega Rally.

Sega Rally 3 had the official WRC (World Rally Championship) license, so featured real cars from that. As it was an arcade release it got around Sony's (at the time) exclusivity license. Sega Rally Arcade Online had cars from Revo instead of the WRC ones. I think another reason it failed was that Sega Rally 1 & 2 were about single laps of each track, where Revo (it was just called Sega Rally without Revo in Europe) had 3 lap races, in order to show of the track degradation. One more fact: Bugbear, who made the PSP version, were the makers of Rally Trophy, the first 2 FlatOut games (3 if you include Flatout Ultimate Carnage), and Wreckfest!

I bought Sega Rally online arcade on PS3, when it was available on PSN in 2011. I though it was pretty decent, but I haven't ever played it nearly as much as Sega Rally 1 and 2. Those two were really special, cutting-edge games in the '90s. The racing genre moved forward so much during the '00s and there was much more competition, so the later Sega Rallys didn't stand out in the same way.
